We are located in the Waikato, a 2 and a half hour drive south of Auckland and 2 hours across from Rotorua. We are a couple of minutes drive from the world famous Glowworm Caves in Waitomo. Our Motels are world unique, built in part from recycled and natural materials. They have in the past worked hard as a war plane, a navy patrol boat and a carriage from the steam train era. As such they have a slightly lingering aroma from their industrial past, much like any modern vehicle - their scent reflects the materials they are made of. Our Cave Holiday Motel built underground contain natural fibre curtains and some timbers - these too reflect the natural scent of their origins.

We stayed in the Hobbit Hole room and loved it. There are also options of a plane and ship to stay in. Our room was comfortable for a family of 4 adults. It has a kitchenette if you choose to bring food but we didn’t. We enjoyed seeing the property with the chickens, pig and cows too. Staff was accommodating to our late arrival and we had no problems with our stay. I saw there were reviews about no heat or TV, but our room had a TV, microwave, and a nice heater. We were all comfortable. Recommend.

This has to be the most interesting place we’ve ever stayed in over many years, and I’m glad we did. We stayed in the hobbit home, which was large, very clean and sleeps up to 6 with a double and 2 sets of bunk beds. No air con but they had fans which were on when we got there to keep the temperature down. The lady at reception was excellent by booking us into the restaurant, which she recommended and was excellent food and also suggested a spot for breakfast which was also great. If you like something different to stay in for one or two nights this is for you

Took the opportunity to visit because our plans had been changed due to Covid19.
We decided to see what Woodlyn Park had to offer. Wow, and absolute pleasure lovely views of bucolic country side, peace and quiet. We stayed in the train, and did have the opportunity to look around but we were just loving the solitude, the warmth and comfort of the day on the deck and the carriage was very warm during the cool night and morning. The carriage sleeps five, the bathroom is very generous as is the front of the carriage with cooking facilities and good seating inside and out and plenty of hot water.

We shall return Woodlyn Park, our host was very informative as well and very welcoming.
There are different themes and we might try the other units, the Hobbit house, the Bristol Freighter or the Ship, all look interesting.

We spent one night in the ship while visiting the area. Front of house service was fantastic with local recommendations and making reservations for us to dine and for cave tours. The place is quirky and fun, with a relatively spacious suite - but I could not get over the smell in our boat unit. It was an awful, toxic chemical smell - it was much worse in the lower rooms and lingered on our clothes the next day.

The photos for this place are rather deceiving. It would seem that the photos were taken when the place first opened and nothing has been done to maintain them. We booked for 2 nights, we arrived to be told we had been "upgraded free of charge" we entered the area to find a reasonable size dead cockroach on the bench. We noticed straight away how damp and cold the area was. The only form of heating was a few heaters that were at least 15 years old and probably a fire hazard. We decided that with having a heart child it was not the place for us being damp, cold and having dead insects on the kitchen bench. The front desk person tried to "upgrade" us again to an area with a heat pump but the room again was so damp. We left and stayed 2 minutes down the road at the Top 10 Holiday Park which was warm, dry and had 21st century heating! We had been in the place for approximately 10 minutes and paid over $400. We were not offered any kind of refund much less an apology for the state of the place.
I wouldn't recommend this place to stay as appealing as it does seem by the photos.

Response from jim xie, Owner at Woodlyn Park
Responded 2 Sept 2020
Our units are made by metals because they are 1918 train carriage and WWII warship. 1. I had offered a heatpump room which was installed in 2020, Janurary, $4000+, which is "21st century heating", but it was ignored with "damp". sure that was cold when we entered as it was not preheated, it would get very warm in 10 minutes but you didn't want to wait. 2. No mention of Cockroach at all when we met face to face. 3. No refund request was made in any form, certainly we don't consider it. walking away is not a good way to get refund, you could ask.

We stayed here while visiting the Waitomo Caves. We chose to stay in the aeroplane cockpit.
The venue is well spaced out over a lot of land, so feels very peaceful.

When we arrived the person at reception was very helpful, full of tips and information about where to eat and what to do during our stay.

The accommodation itself is pretty much what you'd expect for a converted aeroplane.
Its small and cramped, but what they have done with the space available is very impressive.
Two double beds (one is up in the cockpit and a challenge for anyone over 40 to get to...!), a small fridge, hotplates and microwave. Basic eating the cooking utensils are also there.
The bathroom is cosy, but does the job.

You wouldn't want to spend too many nights here, but it does what you expect - gives the kids a great story to share with their friends and provides a perfectly adequate bed for the night.

Once you've seen a glow worm you've seen all glow worms, so its unlikely we'll be back in Waitomo any time soon, but for anyone stopping here for a night with kids in tow, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Woodlyn Park.

We stayed in the plane cockpit unit. Super fun place to stay and we loved it but certainly not luxury accommodation.

This is a real old plane complete with cockpit where the kids could sit in the seats. The windows up there are a bit old and damaged and it had been raining a lot when we visited so the windows were leaking a bit. The ladder up to the upper sleeping area is a bit treacherous and would not be good for younger kids. My kids are 10 and 13 though, just the perfect age for up there. It is too small for bigger people but also too hard for someone smaller to climb up. But for them it was magical and they were super excited to stay there.

The bathroom has a wet shower which got the whole bathroom space wet and soaked the bathmat. Not a big deal for a short stay. The unit had a heatpump to keep it cozy and is insulated so it was plenty warm enough. It has a slightly funny smell but it is an actual old plane so as with everything above we were happy to put up with it for the crazy fun experience. Internet is fast, TV was fine, kitchenette had everything we needed for a short stay.

We are travelling in an electric car so a downside to us was nowhere to charge. They have caravan plugs installed but apparently the council never approved them so they don't work? We were offered aen extension cord to charge during the day but f course we were out. Nearest fast charger is Te Kuiti. Having said that everything in Waitomo is super close to everything else so not a big issue.

Overall we enjoyed it and would recommend for anyone looking for an unusual unique experience.

Our group of five enjoyed our one nights stay here. We were comfortable in the train unit and appreciated having the area around the unit just for us. We had a nice view down to a creek and fields and there was space for the kids to explore and play. The unit was clean and roomy enough (surprisingly). The only downside was that there was no shelter from the hot afternoon sun for the table and chairs outside. It was not a problem to drag the chairs to a shadier spot, though, and hopefully the owners will soon replace the umbrella that can provide some shade. In the morning this was a great place to sit and enjoy the views.

We visited and stayed in room 5 at the back of the boat. Upon arrival the reception was friendly and helpful however as soon as we arrived at our rooms we were met with disappointment. The rooms were definitely quirky and a great idea however the upkeep of the rooms and surrounding areas were horrible. The boat was over what would be better described as a mozzie pond, with overgrown lawns and surrounding areas. Inside the boat the beds were simple but the whole place smelled horrendous. I know the website indicated a slight smell given it had been a working ship but this was not suitable for sleeping in. We have travelled to many places around the world and have stayed in may types of accomodations however this, at $290 for the night, has had to be the worst and most overpriced place I’ve come across. Would not recommend.

Stayed here for 1 night. Quirky, probably fun for kids, and it was clean and had good amenities provided. However, the shower water pressure was almost non existent, and most of all , the place smelt of mildew. There was no visible mould or anything but it made my wife cough all night. My guess is that due to being built partly underground, somehow, damp just gets in. Staff were friendly and helpful. Beds were comfy, albeit main bed cover smelt faintly of the mildew, damp smell in the air. It was not the smell of the natural , recycled wood or hessian sacking curtains, we did not misinterpret those. I grew up on a farm and dealt with hessian grain bags all day. It was not recycled Timbers….it was damp.

Yes there is a 2 ring stove and microwave. The kitchen is tiny with almost no workspace so don’t plan anything except the simplest of meals. There is a toaster and kettle too.

Suitable for 6 means one queen bed and 4 single beds. Sleeps 6 means suitable for 6 people adult or children. We have safety regulations to adhere to and more than 6 overcrowds the facilities. Thank you.
