Millgrove is a tiny town about 3km from Warburton and about an hour and a quarter's drive from central Melbourne. Excellent for a weekend away because it's so close, but when you're there amongst the mountains and forest you feel hours away from the city. My husband and I went to Millwaters Retreat for 3 nights over Easter and had a wonderfully relaxing time. It is a small farm with a couple of cottage-style suites attached to the main house and two standalone cottages which are only a few months old. We stayed in one of the cottages. Gary met us when we drove up the driveway quite late the first night and showed us to our cottage. It was much better than I had even expected. There is one main room, but it isn't a boring square, it's very welcoming and cosy with lots of alcoves and corners. There is a huge oval spa, a king size bed, couch and dining table. A small kitchen is behind a door in one corner (fridge, microwave, stove) and a bathroom behind a door in the opposite corner with a large double shower. They have really thought of everything to make your stay comfortable with dvds, cds and magazines for you to enjoy. All your breakfast provisions are in the kitchen when you arrive, so we didn't see Gary again until we gave him back the key at the end of our stay, so you really have complete privacy. We loved sleeping in, having a late breakfast, reading the paper (left at your door each morning), watching tv, before going for a drive for a few hours in the afternoon. Warburton is a couple of minutes up the road - the Patchwork Teahouse is lovely and there are quite a few groovy cafes. Getting take-away and sitting at one of the picnic tables by the stream behind the shops is hard to beat though. Drive up to Mount Donna Buang surrounded by snowgums and ferns. The Rainforest walk is so beautiful. Climb the lookout at the top of the mountain for wonderful views. Another day we drove through the Yarra Valley to Domain Chandon winery - a very picturesque spot - and Healesville - a lovely country town. On our return to our cottage we enjoyed a romantic spa with champagne and nibbles, listening to music or watching tv. We took ingredients to make our dinners and enjoyed sitting in front of the wood fire at night. I believe it is often quite wet in the area and it definitely was for us. It rained on and off for a lot of our stay but this just meant that staying in our cosy cottage was that much more attractive. You are surrounded by farms so you can hear the cow out the back mooing at you in the morning, there are a couple of alpacas and some sheep. Gary and Marilyn have done a wonderful job in the design and fitting out of their cottages, the breakfast provisions are plentiful and they give you complete privacy. We found it excellent value and hope to return soon.

We arrived to the delightful cottage on a hot day, the aircon was a blessing! Also steve and rach let us know to byo lilos for the river so we headed straight down the driveway to the yarra river and spent the afternoon in the cool bliss of the mountain water right on our doorstep! Spa was fab, the bed was comfy (loved the linen!), we'll definately come back for winter so we can enjoy the fire. The couch is huge and comfy too and the tv while small was great for a movie while having a spa. We loved all the vintage travel stuff! (and our dog loved talking to the horses that were just over the fence right near our veranda). We didnt do any cooking, too many good places to eat in town but the kitchen was well equipped and seperate to the living space which was nice. Wish we could have stayed a third night, will return!

We had a great relaxing trip, really enjoyed the spa and the fantastic cafes in the area. Perfect stop for people cycling the Lilydale to Warburton trail. The info sent to us at the start was a great help and the lilo in the river was an awesome idea too!

A few of the light bulbs needed replacing but didn't ruin the mood for us though.
