Having been dormant for a while, Rudi has recently resurrected this B&B again. The two rooms are spotlessly clean, with good beds and large bathrooms. Both are individually accessed from the garden - the room called Palmeira faces the front of the house and the swimming pool, and other room faces the rear garden courtyard.
There is a covered area nearby with tables, where breakfast is served. This is typically continental (coffee, bread, cheese, ham and orange juices), and there are generous helpings.
The spot is very rural - you look out across a hay field at the front of the property and on other sides there are cork oaks or pines. The local shepherd brings his sheep and goats(and dogs) through the area and recalcitrant goats do sometimes end up in the garden. The sound of the sheep and goat bells makes the whole scene very pastoral.
As it tucked away it is tricky to find, as Rudi hasn’t yet put up any signage. If you leave the centre of Santiago do Cacem and head North West along the N261 you will drive through the village of Escatelares. Almost immediately after the road sign telling you that you have left the village there is a sandy track on the left (which has some postal boxes on it). Turn onto this track. Initially it passes through a field, but it then goes through a cork oak wood (with a small pig farm in it). Keep the farm to your left, until the road forks and which point you should take the right hand fork. The entrance gates to Monte dos Carotos are about 1km from the N261. It is a lovely drive on a sunny evening through the woods.
The only down side is an unfinished set of single storey apartments close to the house (and to one side of the view of the hay field). Apparently a previous owner put them up and then ran out of money. Rudi plans to finish them one day, but in the mean time they are a bit of a blot on the landscape. However, if you ignore them, it is a fantastic spot. Very peaceful.
For those with a satnav, the entrance to the track off the N261 is 38° 01’ 46.3”N, 8° 43’ 07.3”W, and the entrance gates are at 38° 01’ 30.5”N, 8° 43’ 34.5”W
