Initially, we selected this hotel for its location. It is a very easy access to the Autostrada for exploring the many cities & towns of Tuscany, the Chianti region & even Umbria. Sarteano is also near the train station so a day trip to Florence & be back to the hotel for dinner is very doable. The owners are warm, wonderful people & they work very hard to make the hotel so nice & comfortable. Our Italian is not that good, but they try their best to help us understand their suggestions for visiting the area. The hotel's restaurant offers absolutely some of the best food we have ever had prepared for us. The quality of the food served here rivals any restaurant we have eaten in during our 20+ visits to Italy. We highly recommend La Lanterna & it is (& will continue to be) our "go to" hotel when we are in Tuscany.

During our Tuscany trip we stayed here for four nights. At the reception, if somebody is there, they don't speak English and are not even trying to help you. With that many rooms, 10 beds at the non heated and very small swimming pool is pathetic. Rooms are ok and clean, TV did not work but I can't be bothered with that on holiday. The hotel is packed with 75+ years old people and far from a nice city area. All staff don't speak English and are rude in some way. When I entered the breakfast area I said "bongiorno" to the older waiter, he looked at me if I came from Mars and walked away.... I would avoid this place.

My family and I stayed at a house owned by the family who also runs La Lanterna. We ate at the restaurant on several occasions. The restaurant was clean and well-run. The servers speak some English but we were able to speak Italian and communicate easily. The restaurant is on a hill with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. The food was absolutely delicious--probably the best we had in Sarteano. This family-run business was also amazingly friendly and accomodating--we received warm, friendly and excellent service. We had some issues with the pool during our stay and the family was extremely apologetic and did everything they could to make our stay a pleasant one. While this place is not in the "old town" I would definitely come back to eat and stay here, it is only a couple of minutes drive from the downtown. They also make EXCELLENT wine--we bought two bottles and only wish we had bought more to take back with us!

We had a pleasant stay in hotel La Lanterna. It is a quiet place, nice and tidy rooms, airco, an adequate ( yet unheated) pool, good food and a friendly, partially English speaking, staff. We would surely recommend this hotel for a stay in the Tuscany/ Umbria region. Even made a trip to Rome, which was just short of a two hour drive on a not so busy highway. Very feasible for a one day trip.
