Detailed Reviews
Firsts off, Karen and Martin were great hosts, totally in tune with the area and incredibly friendly, helpful and patient. Our room, the studio, was so light and comfortable. We had a couple of the best nights sleep since we arrived in Sri Lanka two weeks previously. Karen said it was because of the night temperature - a perfect 17-18 degrees. Who needs air con?
Breakfast was a real treat, with home made bread, jams, muffins, eggs of the day - it was a real treat. When we arrived by car, we thought that the walk back into Ella would take forever, but it was a lovely 15 minute stroll.
Karen was really helpful in suggesting a walk up to Little Adam’s Peak, then back via the cafe at 98 Acre resort (another treat) and on to the nine arch bridge and along the railway into Ella. This was followed by an on-site massage at the Waterfalls Homestay - again, wonderful.
Evening meals were taken at the restaurant next door - good, local curries from a buffet.
Ella itself was great - different from anything else we’d experienced in Sri Lanka with a much younger, backpacker, bar and coffeeshop vibe.
Overall, our favorite place in Sri Lanka to date.

This place is beautiful and wonderfully managed... Karen , Martin and Kiah are excellent hosts. The house is relaxed and delightfully decorated with a great veranda view of the waterfalls. Breakfasts live up to previous hype.. try the ginger and mango jam with Karen’s no knead ( so lazy) bread... gorgeous. Can’t imagine a better time in Ella... a peaceful respite from the thriving town centre.... thank you possums, it was great indeed

Imagine waking up in a comfortable room with a view on the jungle and wild nature ! That's the magic of Waterfalls homestay: feeling home while you are in Sri Lanka. Warm welcome from Karen and the team, so dedicated to make you have a wonderful stay. Breakfast soooooo good with muffins, homemade bread, curd, fruits, jam, eggs ... Great design, clean and comfortable room, quiet place and nice team: what else ?!

We spent three nights here in May, but really wish we could have spent more. The views overlooking the waterfall were fab and this homestay was the perfect place to unwind. Martin, Karen and Kaya were so friendly and gave us some great recommendations. The breakfast was the best we had around Sri lanka. Really couldn't recommend this place enough!!

To be true for the average family tourist it is a little adventure to get up here. But as soon as you step into this lovely designed, absolutely beautiful place, you will feel like Frodo at Elronds house. Carefully designed rooms, clean facilities, an absolutely lovely caretaking host, peacefulness, an infinite view to an unbelievable waterfall and tea gardens, will make you want to stay the rest of your life. Karen and her family are such nice hosts. My wife, the boy and me agree - this is the best place on earth we have ever been at. Also the healthiest & yummiest breakfast we have had so far in Sri Lanka.

Ah how we love Waterfalls Homestay, one of our favourite places we’ve ever stayed. You immediately feel at home in the beautifully decorated rooms, the veranda area overlooking the waterfall is so lovely and a great place to read or sneak one of Kiah’s amazing muffins! Chandy’s massage in the room overlooking the waterfall was a lovely treat and the little restaurant next door does delicious Sri Lankan curry. Breakfasts are unbelievable, the chickpea extravaganza was a particular favourite and the homemade bread was yummy. Kiah is an amazing host and has some great recommendations including a beautiful tea tour at Amba Estate which we loved (and bought too much jam after trying it at brekkie). Thanks so much Kiah, hope we’ll be back someday.

Waterfalls Homestay (not to be confused with similarly named places in Ella) is run by an Aussie family. The house has a lovely large eating area sticking out into the trees with a view to match the name (water dependant on recent rainfall, not much when we were there). The rooms are very nicely decorated with a nice bathroom and hot shower. We had the studio room and it was a good size with lots of reading matter on the shelves.
It's about a 20 minute walk into Ella down hill and a short tuk tuk ride back (though we got used to walking back as well). The breakfast area, having one large table is great for meeting other guests and long beery chats to your convivial hosts. There are also other seating and eating areas inside.
The food at breakfast cooked by daughter Kiah was great. Some Sri Lankan food and also home made muffins.
We stayed for four nights but I would have been happy to stay for a couple of weeks if there hadn't been so much more of SL to discover.
We went on the cookery course suggested by the hosts and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, please go on the tour to Amba organic tea estate. It is a very small tea estate with just 50 workers and sells it's tea to posh shops including Fortnum and Mason. You can buy some after at a fraction of the price. It was the best tea explanation I've had.

Clean, homely, beautiful location, amazing hosts - can't wait to go back! Our hosts made the most delicious homemade breakfast for us and were able to point out all the best things to do in the local area. The place is a little tricky to get to (by car) but well worth it.

We had two nights with our one year old daughter. Our room was lovely and the breakfast a real treat.
The views are just like the photos and the locations is perfect for getting in and around Ella either by foot or tuk tuk.
You can get good cheap food next door for dinner if you need to.
The mother/daughter team running the place are perfect, lovely people you would be happy to share a plate of food with anywhere.
If we ever return to Ella we will be in no doubt of where to stay.
PS. Had lovely massage whilst watching monkeys playing in the trees outside. A real treat.

I recently stayed at the Waterfall Homestay, it about five minutes in a Tuk Tuk out of Ella - not a great road but so worth the stay. During my stay the internet went down a few times - this is Sri Lanka after all! But it is well worth keep on trying, its a great place to stay, the people are truly lovely. Good Luck
