After some hectic days in Nairobi and Stonetown it was just a pleasure to be met by the owner of Zanzibar retreat Janne. Janne is that type of guy that it feels like you've known for all your life although you just met him an hour ago. We were a family of five with three adult children (18, 20 &...

The perfect place to go and relax after a safari. Jan, the owner, makes you feel at home. The pool is lovely, the whole setting very peaceful and the chef does an amazing job. The white-sand beach - only a few steps away from the hotel's terrace - is very quiet and also a great place for walkings. In the morning...

Relaxing accomodation and place after safari. No parties. Quiet and peaceful. Excellent scuba diving. Comfortable but room is a bit dark and small. Staff is ok. Food is rather small portion, you can walk to other places to have meals.

Hello and thanks for the review. I see you have noticed that our rooms are a bit dark, and we are thinking of improving lights during the low season. There are however a couple of reasons for this darkness. In January when you stayed with us the electricity from the grid was very low, and we cannot allow ourselves to...

My girlfriend and l spent a week recently in this idyllic boutique style hotel in Matemwe, Zanzibar. It was a great experience with a beautiful white sand beach, fabulous surroundings, attentive staff and best of all wonderful peace and quiet. Without a doubt one of my best holidays. We will be back. Thanks to Jan and his staff for making...

We stayed here 4 nights’ mid-march. It's a very lovely hotel located in a very lovely location. Actually everything here is lovely: room, breakfast and swimming pool. The service is excellent and the staff and the owner Jan really make you feel welcome. We only had dinner her once, and that was a mistake. It was fantastic. Very peacefully and...

Nice little hotel (only 12 rooms) with a personal atmosphere. The friendly Finnish chef says hello to every guest nearly every day. The beach is only 20 steps away from your room. From the terrace of the hotel where you have breakfast and other meals, if you like, you look out on the sea through mangrove trees. By the little...

I was at Zanzibar Retreat Hotel in March 2017 with friends. Fantastic food, nice and clean room with wi-fi. The hotel has a wonderful location on the white beach. The transportation from the airport was perfect. The staff is really nice at Zanzibar Retreat Hotel and I will soon come back to Janne and Salome who made my first trip...

A most friendly small retreat, only 12 rooms at the beach. Very relaxed atmosphere and well suited for both couples, families with small children or scuba divers. No night life or beach parties. Almost no noises at all just the waves and the wind. As the sun goes down it turns really dark. The restaurant offers well cooked and tasty...

Everything about this place is amazing. The pool, the food, the beach, the facilities, the staff. Such a nice atmosphere. Jan the owner is helpful and welcoming, all of the staff are delightful. Everyone looked like they enjoyed working there. Lesukiru and Janet were so good at looking after all the guests each evening. The kitchen served some of the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The hotel is situated directly on the beach. Its a peaceful and tranquil setting with plenty of shady places for you to relax. There is a 16x8 meter pool perfect for a refreshing swim when the tide is out. The hotel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and there is a well-stocked bar to accompany. We are proud to have a good reputation regarding food. We work consequently with proper waist management, and support education in the village.
