Travellers' Choice
The hotel is situated directly on the beach. Its a peaceful and tranquil setting with plenty of shady places for you to relax. There is a 16x8 meter pool perfect for a refreshing swim when the tide is out. The hotel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and there is a well-stocked bar to accompany. We are proud to have a good reputation regarding food. We work consequently with proper waist management, and support education in the village. Most of our suppliers are from the village, and we try our best to have a good relation with the whole village.

What an absolute dream of a resort. It has a small family feeling. The hosts Maria and Mats were often around, checking in with guests and sharing stories. The staff were all kind and warm and helpful. We messed up our reservation and showed up a day early but they graciously got our room all ready quickly and were happy to host us. Scenery couldn’t be better. Beautiful hotel grounds, incredible sandy beach out front. Pool is so warm and inviting. Our kids were in it so much. Don’t forget your sunblock! When our kids were burnt we used some aloe from a plant on the grounds :) Restaurant was excellent. Amazing breakfasts with lots of options. We enjoyed the fresh fruit, yogurt and omelettes. Tea time each afternoon was lovely. We ate most lunches and dinners here for 4 days and had plenty of variety in options. They had a great kids menu too, which we especially appreciated! The seafood was outstanding and lots of delicious vegetarian options! They arranged diving and snorkeling trip with Scubafish which was excellent. Rooms stayed cool with AC and fan, WiFi was strong enough for all our kids to be streaming their favorite shows at the same time. Highly recommend staying here. You won’t regret it!

We spent 5 wonderful nights at Zanzibar Retreat in Matemwe. The hotel is small and personal. We booked the Sea View Executive rooms and were very happy with them. They were spacious, nicely furnished and clean. Our children were so comfortable and at home here! The food was superb! The vegetarian dishes that their chef made for us were soo wonderful! Their prices for drinks and food were very reasonable. The beach is definitely one of the best in Zanzibar! The maasais and beach boys were a nuisance but it is understandable given how rough business has been. We strongly believe that at current global times, the effort that is made counts more than what we were “ used to” pre-Covid times. There were a few minor things that we pointed out to them such as their makuti roof in some areas had insects and the water pressure reduced significantly in the shower sometimes. Mats, Maria and their wonderful team went out of their way to ensure our stay is perfect. We highly recommend this hotel!

I spent 8 nights at Zanzibar Retreat Hotel and absolutely loved it. I was traveling solo and looking for a relaxing stay on the island after a few tiring weeks on the mainland. I spent my mornings on the beach and afternoons by the pool (following the sun). The ocean was beautiful and warm. Bring water shoes if you intend to walk out during low tide to protect you from the urchins. The hotel property was pretty quiet and peaceful the whole time I was there. It was also a welcoming environment where I was able to meet and hang out with other guests. I'm pretty cautious when I travel and Covid was never a concern for me while I was there. I stayed in a double room next to the pool. It was clean and comfortable and the AC worked great. I ate almost all of my meals at the hotel restaurant because the food and drinks were very good. There was a mix of local cuisine and seafood, as well as more Euro/American options. I loved eating meals with the beautiful view of the beach through the trees. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Maria provided great suggestions in Stone Town and helped arrange my excursions and airport transportation. I recommend snorkeling (or scuba diving) with Scuba Fish, which she can arrange for you. The only downside to my stay was that the "beach boys" were a bit annoying while outside the hotel property. If you're persistent in saying no they will leave you alone, and I did hear they were much worse in other parts of the island. Overall, I loved my stay at ZRH and wish I was back on that white sand beach!

There are only positive things to say about this hotel: * Very nice and comfortable rooms * Great and price worthy restaurant in the hotel * Super caring and fun owners * Literally one step and you are on the beach * Clean and nice pool + pool area * They have their own herb and vegetable garden in front of the hotel which you'll get to try in the food in the restaurant
