The side road leading up to this fantastic hotel is completely underwhelming but don’t be put off,as once you enter the complex the reception staff rush out to welcome you, swiftly check you in and arrange a buggy to take you to your room, they give you a quick tour of the hotel site and explain where all the restaurants and amenities are and your luggage arrives quickly. We had a Villa which was the most luxurious and largest room we have ever stayed in, including the Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental hotels, we shared our own pool with next doors Villa.
This hotel is in a fantastic location overlooking the Indian Ocean and its just incredible to sit and have your meals looking out.We were looked after by Niranga for our 7 day stay and he is around if you want him,or he stays in touch via Whats Ap, he is very nice and professional and nothing is too much trouble, he arranged a few trips out for us and is happy to make recommendations.
The hotel restaurant’s for lunch and dinner are very good with local dishes and an international menu with lots of choice. However ,breakfast can be a bit hit and miss with the ordering, style over substance ! Note to Restaurant Management - Keep it simple, it shouldn’t be necessary to have to chase the waiter for more toast or croissants !
At Cape Weligama if you do need to complain about anything they are all over it quickly and decisively.
The Chefs table is absolutely superb and worth the extra cost , also the Hotel Exec Chef and Head Chef regularly come into the restaraunt, talk with guests and want feedback in order to improve.
The hotel has a beautiful and stylish bar with very good, experienced and attentive staff and its wonderful to have a drink both before and after dinner, but it is 5* western expensive.
Well equipped gym and a really enthusiastic gym manager who knows his stuff, 2 big pools, the crescent pool which is 50m long and again overlooking the ocean is amazing with comfortable sun beds, nothing is too much trouble for the sun bed attendants who make sure you have fresh towels and the best views ,they are a credit to the hotel,as indeed are all the staff who are engaging and helpful.
The only downside is not the hotels fault but the swimming in the sea is not for the faint hearted - as in December this is surfers sea ! The waves are high and it can be rough, but we didn’t want to leave our Villa pool or the large crescent pool,so it didn’t affect us.
I cant comment on the sea at other times.
The hotel is well situated for touring to Galle and elsewhere. Sri Lanka is an amazing Country and this place well worth a visit.

To put it simply, I didn’t want to leave. I stayed here for a week with family after travelling around different parts of Sri Lanka, and it didn’t disappoint. Absolutely amazing. The staff can’t do enough for you, anything you need they will be there to help. The pools are stunning, especially the infinity pool of course. Complimentary bottled water is given whilst you are sitting by the pool, and overall you just feel so well looked after. The level of service is off the charts. The food is amazing! We were staying here on a half board basis but complimentary afternoon tea at 3pm made it feel like full board anyway! Incredible. The rooms are huge and everywhere you look just reminds you that you are in paradise! I can’t wait to come back again the next time I come to Sri Lanka.

Yes, for Sri Lanka this was an expensive stay, but it was incredible and when you consider what you get (amazing suites/villas) it is actually great value. That's all irrelevant though. You stay at Cape Weligama if you want to be spoiled rotten, looked after by some of the friendliest, most courteous people I have ever met, enjoy spectacular views and lavish accommodation and treat your taste buds to the best flavours Sri Lanka has to offer.

I would seriously recommend a villa over a suite (even though we booked a suite yet found ourselves in a villa) as each villa has a special location. We had almost exclusive use of our "shared pool" which meant we didn't really go to the main, spectacular crescent pool. We were also delighted to have a number of visitors during our stay including the family of peacocks and various lizards, the largest being around one metre long. Just a shame we didn’t get to meet the porcupines!

Never before have I been happy to eat in the same restaurant each night for a week. I could easily manage another week, but in fact we were treated to a special meal in our garden and another at one of the three sunset look out points.

Everyone goes to so much effort to make your stay the holiday of a lifetime and they succeeded. We were particularly well looked after by Venura who arranged everything we needed to make our week extra special, even responding to texts on his evening off. Our pre dinner drinks at The Cape Club each evening were a highlight with Darshana making us feel so welcome.

Whilst it was fantastic to have this amazing resort shared between so few couples and families, we also felt very sad that visitor numbers throughout Sri Lanka have obviously dropped since the troubles last year. These people really deserve our support and I encourage everyone to seriously consider coming back to Sri Lanka and in particular to spend some time at this resort.

We booked the half board option but we thought the food and drink prices were very good value, particularly if you travel regularly to the UAE. The small supplement of $45 each for the six course taster menu at Tableau was well worth it.

Our family of 6 adults spent two nights at two Robert Knox Ocean view villas to celebrate our Mother’s special birthday.

Received a warm welcome from Ishan and Chaminda. This is an outstanding luxury property situated on a unique location with very personal attention from all staff. Our appreciation and thanks to Chef Vinod, Sanka, Susantha and Suranga for giving us their best care and attention, especially to my Dad. Ishan was superb and ensured my mother had a memorable birthday. His planning and attention to details is much appreciated.

Our thanks also to Dushan at Reservation.

We will be back. Till next time, all the very best to all at Cape Waligama. Keep up the great work.

Me & my wife stayed for two nights at the ocean villa. It was very unique experience for us. Special shout out to Chaminda & Chamara for making our stay a memorable one. Chaminda was always just a message away & he would respond instantly to any requirement. Chamara was always lively & ready to serve menu as per our request in the restaurant. Even the Chef was coming out to meet us to get feedback about the menu served. And one could notice the resort manager Mr. Gajendra interacting & making sure that guests are being well taken care of. All in all, out of the world experience in terms of location, the amenities, quality of service & last but not the least one can sense the very warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality & culture for which it is famous for & I must congratulate the owner for maintaining such high standards. We would like to come back to stay again in this fabulous resort with our kids sooner than later.

This is a little piece of heaven. I’ve heard good things about it from locals and was always curious if it’s worth the price. Our stay answered my questions. We stayed at premier ocean villa which sits in the mid range of the villa/suite combination. The villa at 180m provides more than enough space for a couple or even a young family to rest and unwind with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating/lounging furniture. Huge bathroom complemented with a steam room/rain shower makes for airy and relaxing indoor time. The view across the well curated tree line of the Indian Ocean is worth a few million snaps. The pools are semi private except for the main moon pool so there is enough privacy to go around for everyone. The kitchen was larger than life. Head chef Vinool constantly engaging us and trying to figure out what he could do better as the holiday progresses, at first we were hesitant to give feedback or even be demanding but we caught on with the program and he made sure we had everything we wanted to experience and more. Hands down the best culinary experience and we did a fair bit of villa/5 star travels in the last three months in Sri Lanka. The food was tasty, ingredients were of high quality and quantities were just right. The cape sits on top of the hill and I’d recommend an all inclusive/FB experience here vs going a la carte as it’s not an easy walk to any place for eating and the food is just too good to have missed a meal at the hotel. Can’t wait to try the sister properties at tea trails and wild coasted tent lodge but that’s going to have to wait till my next visit to Sri Lanka.

This was my first stop in Sri Lanka and I was sad to leave after a couple of days. The resort is set among a breathtakingly beautiful clifftop view of the ocean. The rooms are incredibly spacious with every single amenity you could ever imagine (from a bed larger than king-size, a huge soaker tub, a sauna and valet laundry service). I am vegan and was very nervous about eating the food, but speaking to the staff was very simple and they easily accommodated my special diet and made me delicious food. Special thank you to Venura - he was always in touch by WhatsApp whenever I had questions about anything and helped me from the beginning to the end of my trip. He was extremely professional and courteous and friendly and I hope to stay again some day mainly because of his excellent attention to detail and helping ensure my stay was nothing short of amazing.

At the outset, let me just say that I travel a great deal and have had the good fortune of staying in some wonderful properties around the world.
I do not generally do reviews but I felt my fellow travelers need to know about our experience at Cape Weligama.

My family and I spent 4 truly miserable days at this Over-rated and Over-priced Relais & Chateaux property in December 2019.

For starters, the rooms were wholly inadequate. One of them actually looked out onto a Wall (instead of the Blue Ocean!). It was really so bad that we wanted to move and so advised the "management". Unfortunately, being the period between Christmas and New Year, nothing was available, so we were just stuck there.
Among the many problems we faced:
1. The Electricity went off for a whole afternoon. This, by itself, was not all that bad but then then the water systems gave up. The toilets were unusable etc etc. Most Unpleasant.
Nor was anyone able to suggest alternative arrangements or even give us an idea of when normalcy would be restored.
2. The wait for golf carts was endless. It appears they have just one or, may be two, for what is a very large property. Given the rates they charge and the value they deliver, surely they can afford a couple more and help their guests utilize their time effectively.
3, There is only one restaurant on the property, and no decent eating out options close by. By the end of our stay each of us knew the menu by heart (as an aside, the views from the restaurant are spectacular).
4. The staff was most attentive and service-oriented, as is true of Sri Lankans generally. However, there was a certain degree of arrogance in the management, which really was quite unnecessary and totally out of place in the Service industry.
So, fellow travelers, Go if you Must but please keep your Expectations at Sea Level.
Arun

Response from ResplendentCeylonSL, Owner at Cape Weligama - Relais & Chateaux
Responded 10 Mar 2020
Dear Arun, Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad that you found our staff attentive and service oriented and the views spectacular. The management are usually equally helpful but having reviewed the incident logs during your stay, I can understand how their patience may have worn thin. On arrival you complained that your room was not immediately next to the other room that your family had booked - as we were completely sold out, we could not do any better and you acknowledged that you were aware that the rooms would not be adjacent. The “wholly inadequate” junior suite sized at 130m2 or 1400ft2, that you claim looked out onto a wall, looks out onto a large terrace and garden and beyond that the pool and the ocean. We understood that you wrote the room off as you wanted to move to the room next to the rest of your family but it was occupied. You insisted on a discount and threatened to leave if we could not provide one. We were not in a position to offer you your discount and reluctantly accepted you leaving although we would not be able to resell the rooms at such short notice. We were glad that you chose to stay. We accept full responsibility for the power failure the next day due to unscheduled maintenance by the electricity board at a time when our backup generator was undergoing a major repair. This was entirely unexpected and clearly very inconvenient for which I apologise profusely. The golf buggies did require about 5 mins notice as we were running a full house. The main restaurant Ocean Terrace has a wide menu and our chefs are keen to prepare special dishes off the menu. We also have the Surf Bar which is popular for lunch and Tableau; the chef’s table, at dinner. Three options for just 39 villas and suites have not been previously found inadequate. I wouldn't normally go to such detail in responding but since your stated intention was to alert fellow travellers, I thought I should address all your points so as not to mislead. Warm wishes, Malik

My wife and I stayed at Cape Weligama for two nights over the last weekend to celebrate a part of our honeymoon. We have visited Resplendent Ceylon Wild coast a few times before this, so was eager to visit this property despite the negative comments we had heard about it.

The property is situated in a stunning location and the views from different areas of the resort were breathtaking. My wife and I wanted to highlight how much we enjoyed the food and the drinks at the hotel. Every single meal we had was very good. Ruwen and Sanka from the restaurant attended to all our needs and truly went out of their way to accommodate our every request.

However, we were quite upset about one thing that happened to us during our stay.

On our way to lunch we asked for our room AC to be fixed because it was not working. When we came back It was still not fixed. An engineering team was sent to our room and their response was " this is how the AC works, the hotel is a bit busy today so this is all the central AC can put out".

One of our friends joined us on this trip for the second night and we went to their room to see if their room had the same issue, however their room AC was working far better than ours. Later we asked for the engineering team again but this time with our villa host Sherom. Even he visited the room and acknowledged that the room AC wasn't cooling. However the response to the issue by the team was for us to open the doors in the toilet and the room and let the toilet AC cool the room. Unfortunately this was a really bad experience for us. A room change was not even suggested to us by them and I don't think even the GM was informed about this.

It was really unfortunate that this happened to us because we enjoyed everything else in the property but coming back to a room with a broken AC in this heat was not a pleasent experience. We were up most of the night due to the heat.

However, great property, excellent food and great service by the restaurant staff but I feel like our issue should have been handled much better.

We finished our honeymoon and Sri Lankan tour at the beautiful Cape Weligama. We felt safe, comfortable and very well taken care of in what seemed like our own private paradise on this sprawling property hidden away on the cape. Every detail for extra comfort is thought through - from the treat on arrival, to the preloaded channels (James Bond flicks to a classic collection of films shot in Sri Lanka) to the inexhaustive list of curated experiences you would never dream up yourself, We enjoyed the stunning vistas from the clifftop (and especially the crescent pool) and spent time exploring the beaches and swimming on both the east and west sides of the resort. The food was excellent, the service impeccable and the surroundings magical. Don't miss out on the spa. Special thanks to Steve in bookings, Era our experience manager, and to Malith in housekeeping who went above and beyond in his attention to detail to our personal comfort, preferences and appreciation of the local nature. Although we could have spent the entire time just relaxing, CW is perfectly positioned to explore both the coast around Galle and further east. We were lucky to meet Viraj who operates a tuk tuk from the station right outside the hotel. He knows the area inside out and we recommend him for his great rates, direct routes and the priceless feeling of complete trust and safety in his skill and intention. We highly recommend this property and our only regret is that we didn't stay longer! We absolutely loved our time in this beautiful country and now that we know how easy it is to travel to and around Sri Lanka, we will definitely be returning to the country and Cape Weligama again soon!
