The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki, is celebrated for its historic elegance, but some guests find certain aspects tired and in need of refreshment. While the hotel's cleanliness receives commendation, the rooms, despite being spacious, are often described as outdated and not always well-maintained. The resort's prime beachfront location in Waikiki is highly praised, though the value for money comes into question due to pricey amenities. Service quality and the cost of extra amenities receive mixed reviews, indicating an area for potential improvement.

I spent a week staying at The Royal Hawaiian and here are my thoughts. First the good- the property is beautiful. It’s lush and tropical and the history in the building is something special. The location is central to everything you would want to do in Waikiki, so it is also very convenient. As a Platinum Elite member, the welcome gift was very nice and allowed me to try the bakery which I probably would not have without the incentive to go there. I went two other times during my stay because the pastries were delicious! I enjoyed the activities offered by the resort and participated in lei making, the history tour and made a kukui nut bracelet. The Sheraton pool next door was lovely and offered views of the pool and the beach so we reserved a cabana on two separate occasions to take advantage of this perk! Pool staff were attentive and very helpful, especially Kevin and Eli.

Now for the rest of it- the rooms are old and need to be refreshed. We expected the historic room to have older furnishings, but it was also very basic with no real luxurious touches. For the price of the rooms I was expecting a bit more. Carpets seemed dingy so I used the complimentary slippers available to avoid being barefoot on the carpet. The daily water provided was a nice touch and much appreciated and housekeeping came daily to ensure all the toiletries were always refilled. That being said, there was a day that housekeeping must have rushed through our room because the dirty linens from a few pillows were accidentally left on top of the dresser drawer. We also tried the Mai Tai bar on property and this was a huge disappointment. The bar was busy and bartenders were rude. One bartender in particular, Kekoa, was short and dismissive in all his interactions. After waiting patiently a few minutes, Kekoa finally made eye contact and then asked if our order was for here or to-go. When we asked for the drinks to-go, he snapped that we needed to wait in the to-go line and pointed in the direction on the opposite side of the bar. There were no signs or any indication that there was a to-go line, but we went to the other side of the bar and after several more minutes, he took our order. After making our drinks he placed both of them on the bar without telling us which was which. We had to ask him to identify our two different mai-tais which seemed to irritate him. We paid almost $45 for 2 drinks so a little curtesy would have be nice. When checking in, the staff were very friendly and professional, but when we requested a late check-out later in the week, the staff member informed us it was not possible because the property already offers a noon check-out which is generous. I completely understand that late check-out is only a request and granted if possible, but overall it was disappointing that the staff member didn't even look to check if it was possible. He just said that noon should be late enough because this is a later check-out time then other properties.

Ultimately, while the Royal Hawaiian is a beautiful property steeped in history, I would probably try a different luxury hotel the next time I find myself in Hawaii.

Beautiful resort hotel, large rooms, scenic ocean & Diamond Head views, less than 2-minute walk from hotel to beach, and all staff was very friendly. Many free activities include making flower leis, bracelets, ukelele lessons, and more. Great location as about 7-minute walk off property to many restaurants and shopping. The staff was very friendly and treats its guests first class! From the moment you get to hotel, you get a kukui nut shell lei. At check-in they take time to answer questions (Rebecca G), give a free coupon for 3 bakery items; later Andrea helped me with info and breaking dollar bills into smaller dollar bills. We had great maid service in our room from Dolly and Eva and they were around lots giving extra fresh towels & coffee and more to make sure our room was fully-stocked. Clarence, room service and attendant helping guests with ice and information, was very kind, provide info and charming. The Surf Lanai which served breakfast daily was an excellent experience. Host Lee Young, Chester, and Hostess Eriko greeted customers warmly, seated people, remembered guest names and provided Flea Market shopping locations. Restaurant Manager, Keenan, checked with the diners to see all was going well and if they needed anything else or conversing about the weather or daily activities. Our favorite waiters were Stanton (made us smile and kidding around, gave local info insights/ideas) and Steven (lots of jokes and riddles); both gave excellent and attentive food service. The Pool staff was helpful in finding chairs at the pool and replacing fresh towels for the people. Pool supervisor, John, kept the area clean, helped others and us moving chairs around and had interesting stories; remembered us from previous stays here. Pool attendant, Giovanna, also cleared towels from empty chairs and monitored unattended chairs. Diane O, was our favorite cocktail and food waitress at the pool, treated guests as old friends and kind. This resort hotel also provides free suntan lotions at the pool for its guests!
Front desk supervisor Matt was helpful to guests if they needed help as was other Senior Management (Nicole Okuna and Joo Ah Ige) attending to needs of wedding parties and business meetings, asking guests how they were doing and if all was going great during their stay at the hotel. This was our fifth time staying here and will stay here when we are on Oahu. The staff all throughout the hotel that we met were very kind people, wanted to make its guests feel like old friends and were well-trained. The ALOHA Spirit was exhibited all throughout our stay by the staff! RELAXING!

We stayed at the Royal Hawaiian for 5 nights from August 1 to August 6. I used Marriott Bonvoy points for one of the nights and booked the rest through Priceline, 1 room for 2 adults and 2 children (myself, my wife, my 10 year old daughter, and my 7 year old daughter) and 1 room for my mother in law and father in law. We were given two garden view rooms side by side in the Historic Wing on the second floor, rooms 239 and 240. The rooms each had a view of the property which we really enjoy. The only real concern in the Historic Wing is the lack of a balcony but we really love staying in the Historic Wing and it's something we were willing to do without, but I can imagine that many would prefer the balconies in the Mailani Tower.

We were a bit worried before the trip if we would have enough space as in our previous visit we stayed in two junior suites, but there was plenty of room for us and I think our bathroom in this room was actually bigger than the bathroom we had in the junior suite. The rooms have very tall ceilings which make them feel even more spacious.

The hotel reached out in advance of our stay to welcome us and asked if we had any questions and they were able to make sure my reservations were linked and even provided drink tickets for my father in law's 75 birthday which we found to be very kind and considerate. Marissa made us feel very welcome and definitely allayed our concerns before we arrived which was greatly appreciated!

When we first got to our room we were greeted by the housekeeper who would be taking care of our room and she was so warm and kind and did a wonderful job. Every staff member we came across went out of their way to make us feel valued as guests.

We made use of the hotel's pool and my daughters loved the Helumoa Family Pool that the hotel shares with the Sheraton Waikiki. They were often crowded and it was always difficult to find a pool chair but luckily with the girls we basically just drop off a bag and kick off our flip flops and jump in the pools so we never really needed much space anyway. We headed out to Waikiki Beach every day as well and this was our first time in August so the ocean was pretty crowded but we all still had a great time.

We love the variety of restaurants in Waikiki and the Royal Hawaiian is in a great location to get everywhere pretty quickly. We attended the Aha'aina Laua while we were there on Thursday night and really loved the storytelling aspect of the show. The food was good and the location can't be beat.

We've stayed at a few other hotels in Waikiki and we came back here for a reason - everything about this place just feels right to us. The Royal has so much character, charm, and history and we loved every minute of our stay here.

We have been here many times over the years. This has been a great favorite of ours, but is now sadly shabby and disappointing. It needs renovation and hasn't been touched since 2008. We had a deluxe ocean view room with torn curtains and worn carpet. The hallway carpets were worn and musty. The "free" breakfast with Bonvoy Titanium status was a no-choice boxed cold continental breakfast. Upgrading to pancakes, coffee, and orange juice was $19 + tax and tip. Non-elites paid double for that. Once we settled in the employees went on strike 8/31/24 so we are making our own beds and going elsewhere for dinner. It is lucky that we already had dinner reservations elsewhere at independent restaurants, because there are five hotels now on strike and all their dining rooms are closed.
This has been a favorite of ours, but we won't be back until it is renovated. We're sad to say goodbye to the Royal Hawaiian.

I’d never stay here again. There was a staff strike for the first 3 days of our stay which meant no room service, no room cleaning, no towels or toilet paper, no restaurants, pool bar service etc. luckily the hotel is very central to restaurants outside. The hotel did offer us a discount for the first night & a $300 credit to use in their shops, however, it took them a week to refund us for a $1195 Luau that was cancelled.
Even when staff returned, the room cleaning was almost non-existent.
We were charged over $960 for pool chairs that we didn’t use and even though we left the hotel and settled our account last week, the hotel is still charging our credit card.
Our friend, staying in another room at the Royal Hawaiian, was charged twice for her room and we’d already left the hotel and been in New York on the last leg of our trip. She called the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Manager, Kazu Sekine on the day of the additional charge and he was most unhelpful, saying sorry and you should have your money back in 3 weeks! A bit late when you’re on a holiday in New York with little money left.
Really appalling service. This was a bucket list hotel and was so disappointing and upsetting.
Don’t waste your money.

The Hotel is beautiful, the room was really nice. You get to use their robes in the room, (which cost about $150 if you wish to purchase them and take them home (Not worth $150 IMO)) the bathroom was nice, but it did have a very small space for the toilet, so turning around to get the TP was not easy. They did have a Fridge, and coffee pot, as well as hair dryer, which seems to be pretty standard even in the cheapest of rooms these days. The water bottles were complementary, and even toothbrushes were included with the room. I got 2 vouchers for the bakery on the first floor (Bakery does not have any Gluten Free, so neither my wife or me could eat there ended up giving both vouchers to my friends who stayed a few rooms down.) The Washcloths and Towels were really nice quality, the bed was comfortable, pillows were good, we got extra pillows. For the price, (I want to think it was around $700/night) there was no complementary breakfast, Ended up walking to Denny's for Breakfast 2 mornings and bringing it back to the room (7 min walk). You can use the beach which was public, beautiful until it filled up with people, if you want an umbrella and a beach chair that will be about $73.50 (IIRC) for customers of the Royal Hawaiian. Valet Service is I think $50 per day, did not use, but we asked. Tour guides thought we were "Rich" because we stayed there, we are not, but it was a very nice hotel. If I return I will stay somewhere less expensive for sure It is supposedly the most expensive hotel in the city. But if you want a Hallmark experience this is a great place to stay.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with fresh leis. We weren’t expecting this to be included, so it was a very nice welcome! The hotel is beautiful! The open-air lobby lets you immediately take in the beautiful ocean views while you check-in. The hotel’s Mai Tai Bar serves good food but be prepared to pay quite a bit more for most things while in Hawaii. The hotel is kept very clean and smells amazing! The bed was very comfortable. The room was free of outside noises or distractions from within the hotel. The hotel is located so that you are close to many other places of interest.
The reason for not deserving a five star review from my experience is:
1) We couldn’t get the room temperature cool enough.
2) Our garden view (room 340) was blocked from the tree being so big that the leaves were up against the window, blocking any kind of garden view.

All in all, we would be happy to stay here again!

Deciding on which hotel to choose in Waikiki was challenging as there are so many options. So we stayed at The Royal Hawaiian, The Sheraton and Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber. I will review all 3 in separate posts.

What we loved most about the Royal Hawaiian was the impeccable service, friendly warm welcome, incredible character, history and charm of the hotel, the unbeatable location and spectacular gardens.

As a family of 4 we all agreed that the Royal Hawaiian was somewhere really special and very much worth the room rate.

We loved its central location adjoining the Royal Hawaiian Centre shopping complex, which is stunning. So many beautiful shops , an excellent food court and surrounded by beautiful tropical landscaping. At night, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the shopping complex take on a whole other level of gorgeousness tropical bliss.

We loved how you could use the swimming pool facilities of the adjoining Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, as the Royal Hawaiian’s swimming pool is small.

The beachfront location of the Royal Hawaiian is superb as it looks along the length of Waikiki beach and out to Diamond Head. So central and in the middle of all the Waikiki beach action.

The Mai Tai bar at sunset is wonderful with a welcoming but classy vibe.

We stayed in one of the garden rooms which we were concerned may not have a good view of anything and may be too outdated, as this section of the hotel only has heritage older more traditional rooms. However, we needn’t have worried at all. The room was spacious, luxurious with an old world warm and welcoming nostalgic charm. We thought it was beautiful.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel will not disappoint.

The staff are so friendly and informative from the Valet parking attendants, Reception, restaurant and bar staff to room attendants. Absolutely first class service.

We want to express a very special thank you to Randal, the Security staff and the Valet parking gentleman who went above and beyond to help us with an incident we had with luggage left in the room after checkout. It was not until we arrived at the airport that we noticed one of our bags missing. We rang up the Royal Hawaiian and their help was amazing. They arranged a taxi driver to take our left luggage to the airport. The Royal Hawaiian team went above and beyond the to help us. We were so impressed with their team effort and cooperation. Incredible first class service even beyond the hotel grounds. Bravo.

Overall, the Royal Hawaiian was a truly memorable stay. Highly recommended and our favourite hotel on our 2 and a half week Hawaiian holiday.

Upon check into this hotel my room was not ready. I was told I must immediately get and pay for chairs on the beach even though I did not need them for 48 hours so after our flight and being sweaty and exhausted we had to race to the pool to try and find it with no map and no guidance only to be told that we were not allowed to book it today we had to wait until til tomorrow! The Bellman met us at our room and I refused to allow him to leave the luggage when I saw an unbelievably rundown and small room directly across from the elevator when I asked for a quiet room. I called downstairs and was told the manager would call me. No callback. No answer twice thereafter so I went all the way back down to be given a room up the hallway equally rundown. There is no ability to get food here as the fine restaurant only has a price fix menu and the other very casual restaurant does not take reservations. We stood in line to be seated and had overcooked chicken tenders with fries for $30 that looked like it came off a kids menu. There is no room service! The front desk told me I should try some of the food at the hotels surrounding this location and it’s great because they allow me to put it on my hotel bill here. Really? How generous! I nearly laughed out loud and said I don’t know how me having to leave the property to feed my 17-year-old daughter is great. Then I was told there is a resort fee for God knows what since there are literally zero amenities here. I have to pay for the beach chairs and umbrella but you are charging me a fee!???? I could’ve stayed anywhere I wanted and I chose this place because it was part of their luxury hotel collection and other than the lobby this is as far from a luxury hotel as I have stayed in in years! This was supposed to be an iconic ending to a beautiful mother daughter trip and my daughter and I could not be more disappointed. I don’t pay this kind of money to stay in a room that is a lesser quality than my bedroom at home. This is a rundown old, dirty room and balcony and quite frankly Marriott should be ashamed of themselves calling this a luxury collection. What I hope is that a Marriott CEO reads this and actually makes this right. What a sad ending in that we can’t wait to check out and just get home. Terrible false advertising on claiming 5 stars. I will edit this review for an update if Marriott decides to do right by me.

We stayed here for our first two nights of our honeymoon. We chose the Royal Hawaiian for its location and history/cultural relevance. Overall, the view from our room and its proximity to the beach were ideal. We could watch the surf break from our balcony and we were just seconds from the beach. The recent renovations of the grounds and lobby etc are beautiful and make the stay iconic. The rooms themselves, however, were drab, outdated and at times a bit nasty (see attached photos) - the lamps were rusty, the vents had mold, the bathrooms felt a bit dank. In addition, the pool area was somewhat unkempt - we had to clean our own area more than once when we found empty chairs to sit, busing empty glasses and garbage etc. We also found it shocking that the hotel does not provide guests with umbrellas and chairs for the beach - these you’ll need to rent for $150 to sit “front row” by the ocean and $70 for the “back row.” Since this is a beach front property, we felt this should be an included amenity that many other hotels in Waikiki do offer as part of their stay. Overall, it was cool to stay at such an iconic landmark but I would not return for the amount we paid for night and what we actually got (aside from location).

There are two beach umbrella and lounge rental areas. Neither allow you to move the lounges.

Hi again, I found this offer via Marriott for 40,000 points that you would get (should get you a free room at some Marriotts/affiliates as some require 25,000 points or more. Higher end properties such as the Royal Hawaiian may require much higher. In that case, sometimes you can use points and money to get a free room. This is for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card & costs $95 annually. Go to the Marriott Bonvoy internet site to see offer

We were at the small pool and lots of the chairs had an umbrella for free near them. Guessing maybe 15 free umbrellas. We did not rent a cabana by the small pool.
