Guests at The Kahala Hotel & Resort often find the service commendable, with staff members earning recognition for their attentiveness and professionalism, despite occasional lapses. The spacious rooms with striking views are well-regarded, yet some reviewers suggest they could benefit from a refresh. While the hotel's serene location is a highlight for those seeking a peaceful escape near popular sites, critics point out that the value proposition is diminished by the high costs associated with dated rooms and amenities. The atmosphere and amenities, including the unique dolphin encounters, receive mixed reviews, reflecting a balance of luxury and a need for updates. Cleanliness is generally applauded, although not without a few mentions of inconsistency.

We have loved the Kahala since our first stay in 1982. It is elegant and understated, and its peaceful, private location and beautiful swimming beach makes it akin to being on an outer island. The rooms are spacious and well designed, and the two baths with two separate dressing areas are laid out beautifully. We were very lucky to have had Kelly’s help when we checked in. She upgraded us from Mountain View rooms to the very best beachfront rooms at a reasonable daily extra charge, which was much less than if we had booked those rooms. And she gave us a 4:00 pm check out which was really helpful given our red-eye flight home that evening. It gave us almost an entire extra day. The room’s location meant that we could sit on our shady lanai right across the lawn from the beach and run out for a swim. The cove is quite calm and there is a raft for those who want to sunbathe in the middle of the ocean. The food at the breakfast buffet is wonderful and the hotel service is great. We always end our stay in Hawaii with a couple of nights at the Kahala so that we can eat at our favorite restaurants in Honolulu, and the Kahala is the perfect spot.

What a beautiful resort. My husband and I had a fabulous three days here in an ocean view room and it was beautiful. The pool and beach are wonderful and the dolphin lagoon was such a lovely surprise.

Our room was large and very clean with a very comfortable bed.

Staff were brilliant too.

All in all we had a wonderful stay.

From our initial contact with Ellen Maki in resrevations and throughout our stay, everthing was excellent. Room, lanai and bathroom were spacious and clean. All staff were very friendly and helpful and location of the hotel was perfect for us; away from hustle and bustle of Waikiki but close enough to have easy access to downtown restaraunts etc. Valet service was very convenient. Security was excellent. One night we intentionlly left our room door ajar as another couple was stopping by and within minutes, security knocked to let us know our door was open! Cleaning staff was excellent each day; ice bucket was always full and room was always clean! Our only suggestion (we recognize this is a luxury hotel and Oahu is expensive) would be to have a more reasonably priced breakfast and dinner option. We did have breakfast each day at the hotel even though cost was very high. We elected to leave the property for dinner each night to find more casual menu variety and more reasonble cost. That said, we definetly would come back to this hotel next time we visit!

We booked standard room and were disappointed. Although the room spacious but it was very dated and carpets were old and bathroom smelled of drain. We did not like the old layout of the bathroom with his and her closets inside of the bathroom. The shelves were very worn and needed to be refurbished. We had a mountain/golf course view with a side view of the dolphinarium and found it private and it was nice to have a lanai.

Despite being an old hotel, the common areas still looked classy and comfortable including the lobby and restaurants.

There is only one pool and it is rather small to accommodate all guests. The hot tub was always crowded as it was a bit cold in March.

We loved the beach area especially for little ones. It was always calm and very shallow. Although the beaches in Hawaii are not private to the hotels, Kahala Beach is very wide and never felt crowded like the pool area.

Breakfast was included and it was plentiful and offered Japanese options as well. We enjoyed having breakfast outside overlooking the beach. It was busy on the weekends and there was a bit of wait but it wasn’t bad. Wished this waitress we saw did not let a solo patron sneak in from the patio without lining up like everyone else.

Shuttle service to Royal Hawaiian Center and Ala Moana really came in handy when we didn’t have a rental car. We always booked the same day, just a few hours before and they were able to accommodate without problems.

There is a Hertz office and it was very convenient to rent and return the same day so we did not have to deal with high parking fees.

Overall service was okay but nothing extraordinary. Everyone seemed too busy and occupied. We were not greeted or helped with our luggages until my husband went to disturb bell boys really into their conversation. There was no personal touch or welcome and we did not feel like the service we received was anything close to 5 star including the always busy reception.

Thank you for sharing the positive experiences during your stay. We are disappointed with you as some items did not live up to your expectations, including the inattentive service from the bell team. We will address this accordingly as this is not our standard. We are currently doing a refresh of all our guest rooms including the bathrooms, as well as our common areas and hallways, so hopefully we may welcome you back in the future in an updated room. Mahalo!

The Kahala needs work in all areas— facilities, service, quality of food, and beverage. If you are used to actual five star resorts (e.g., Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton), then you will be sorely disappointed by the Kahala. We stayed at the Four Seasons in Ko Olina in February and thought we would try the Kahala this go round based on the rave reviews on this site and elsewhere. We chose poorly. The deferred maintenance of the property is glaringly obvious, from torn awnings at the front, a shredded State flag over the entrance, to the missing pool tiles, faded and stained carpets, and weather worn facade throughout. Service needs work— the staff’s welcomes feel reluctant and often insincere, especially when compared to other places where we have visited. There is no going the extra mile. Pool service is scarce and only existent when one summons staff by bell. The were are none of the five star touches such as cool towels or smoothie shots we have enjoyed at other properties. The pool staff does not regularly remove towels from chaises or tidy the area, so by the afternoon everything looks askance and dirty. The food quality is mediocre and limited in selection and sadly, reminiscent of cruise ship food— Hoku’s being the exception and an utter standout. Where the Four Seasons uses fresh juices in cocktails, the Kahala bars use mixes and sugary additives. The pool and hot tub are frequented by locals coming from the beach, and despite the manager’s assurance that this is being addressed— it isn’t. The hot tub was overrun one night by non guests and three young adults only left because they heard us report them. The staff did not address it. Our room was comfortable and roomy— having been upgraded to an ocean suite from ocean front, one of the reasons this review is not two stars. Housekeeping seems efficient and thorough although we aren’t messy and stains on the carpets and sofas predate our stay. The dolphin program, while controversial, is pretty remarkable. The dolphins are well cared for. Today, a disabled woman was given time in the pool with a dolphin, which was touching and special. Having severely disabled family members, we could appreciate the effort the staff took to make the visitor comfortable and to give her an amazing experience. The beach is also a standout and is easily accessible— although that makes the resort accessible to non guests as well. This resort though is far from a quiet luxury experience, and seems to attract more families (with lots of young and loud children), the opposite of how it bills itself in marketing materials. If you are a family then this might be a great pick. If you are looking for an adult, relaxing, and quality experience, then I would look elsewhere.

The Kahala Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a great place to enjoy a luxury vacation in Oahu. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated and are equipped with comfortable beds, a lanai or balcony, a large bathroom and dressing area and luxurious amenities. We had a king room an larger rooms and suites are available. The room has a large tv with cable, a small fridge, a shower and separate tub. Our room had a lanai which bordered the Dolphin lagoon. There is a swimming pool and spa pool adjacent to the pool area.
The exterior areas are beautifully landscaped and maintained.
There are several dining facilities; an indoor dining room and bar next to the lobby area and another dining room and bar on the lower level. Food is also available in the pool area, and there is an outdoor dining area next to the pool. The hotel is family friendly and offers educational programs by Dolphin Odyssey, but no staged dolphin shows.
There several shops on the main level which sell bathing suits and casual clothing as well as souvenirs and art.
The hotel has a casual resort feeling and a relaxing ambiance. This is not a resort to book if you are looking for a party atmosphere. No one will try to sell you tours, but there is a desk that will help you with tours if you want to schedule them.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kahala and recommend it to couples, singles and families.

The kahala is a beautiful property, excellently maintained with attentive staff.

You get what you pay for, as this is not inexpensive. We had a first floor walkout that led directly to the beach. My daughter took advantage of the Dolphin Quest-which she loved.

Valet was quick, friendly and efficient. The woman who checked us in, Carolyn, could not have been nicer. She took the time to tell us about the property and was very kind to my daughter. Turn down service, room service and cleaning staff were all very kind.

The only issue I had was with staff constantly asking us if we were guests. I understand the need to maintain security and safety and you don’t want people using the services that guests pay a lot of money for. But I was asked 10 times (I counted) if we were guests. That doesn’t include the necessary times they’d ask because of charging our lunch to the room or checking in for the buffet breakfast. We were asked 9 times while we sat on the provided beach chairs if we were guests and to provide our room number. I started watching if the over zealous employees would ask anyone else around us and they did not. Once, about 5 minutes after we were“carded” by a beach chair attendant, I overheard another attendant asking the woman who’d just asked us for proof of staying at the hotel, if we were guests. I started getting a bit of a complex. I’m a middle aged white dude and I was on a father/daughter trip before my child goes off to Basic Training. I don’t dress like riffraff and I’m polite and I tip well. I’m guessing some of the issue could be related to the fact that we don’t ask people to fawn over us. We grab our own chairs and towels and generally don’t make a fuss.

But the capper was our last day when I went to breakfast. I provided my name and room number to the woman seating people at the buffet breakfast.

The waitress, “Zee”, greeted me as I sat and asked if I wanted coffee. I got my coffee and grabbed my food and as I was about 10 minutes into my meal, “Zee” marched up and said,”What’s your room number and name?” There was no sugar in her pronouncement.

I was not happy. I didn’t know why I had to prove myself yet again but I did. People were looking at me like I’d done something wrong and I was not impressed. I watched as Zee nodded and walked off and hugged some other guest sitting at a table nearby. Zee did not grill anyone else about their bonafides.

Great hotel with some really nice folks but they can chill with some of the facist staff who grill middle aged men 10 times in 5 days.

Kahala Resort is a stately elegant resort celebrating its 60 year anniversary. It is not far from Waikiki but such a different experience! It is in a quiet area on the beach and includes a small pool and a lagoon with dolphins (you can pay to swim with them). The lobby area features cathedral ceilings with beach breezes.

We stayed in a recently renovated ocean view room in the Dolphin wing. The bathroom was enormous, with a closeted toilet, shower, separate bath and two walk in closets. The room had two double beds. The room was serviced twice a day - how nice when other places only service your room every few days!

On checking into the room we were delighted to find three dolphin cookies on a plate in our room.

We had dinner and breakfast at the Plumeria restaurant on site and both meals were terrific. Lovely to eat outside near the beach.

The hotel has a free shuttle that will take you to several locations in Waikiki. Given the traffic in that area and tricky parking, I recommend using the shuttle to get to Waikiki even if you rented a car.

The staff was polite and helpful without fail.

Unlike many places, it does not charge a resort fee!

The beach has calm water and is fairly shallow. There is plenty of space.

The only reason I gave it four rather than five stars is that it is not walking distance to any stores or restaurants so you need a car, to use a shuttle or taxi/ ride share to get around. Also parking is expensive - $50 per day.

I never dreamed that when I booked a hotel at the Kahala Resort, that the warmth and care would begin before we even arrived. A week prior, a concerned employee called to make sure we knew about the timings of restaurants in the event that we came late, “since we see you have kids,” and the restaurants might be closed. They also offered alternatives. Truthfully, we were well prepared and ate on the plane and had planned to just check in and roll into bed. This level of care and thoughtfulness, though, was outstanding! It only got better and better once we actually arrived! Our multi generational group found this to be the best hotel in Oahu! Again, seeing as we arrived late, the staff felt compelled to give us extra cookies (and the cookies were wonderful,by the way)! The hotel itself is perfectly family friendly, with large bathrooms and two sinks to help multiple family members get ready at the same time. The property is relaxing and the site now to so many of our firsts as a family—first snorkel experience, for instance. My kids, including one who is a picky eater are insisting that I mention the Plumaria lounge. The food was so amazing, and the view so peaceful— with lots of vegetarian options for us! (Visa signature card holders take note, this amazing brunch is free for two adults per room). More than any other hotel on Oahu, the staff really embody the Aloha spirit. This is now our new go to place to stay in Hawaii. Thank you, Kahala Resort, for helping us create a new family tradition!

The draw of the property has always been the promise of a quieter, less crowded beach 10 minutes from downtown and for years that was enough to carry the water of dated rooms and incredibly over-priced food and drink offerings (Even for Waikiki).
Simply not enough to overcome the obvious short-comings anymore especially in light of the loss of the once famous Customer Service that made you feel like Ohana.

With that in mind, unless your primary desire is to stay in one of the few rooms that overlook the Dolphin experience highly recommend Four Seasons and other resorts out West if you want to avoid staying in Waikiki or The Ritz, Sheraton, Moana SurfRider, Trump Tower, Hyatt Centric if staying in Waikiki is an option.
Comparable or lower Room and Resort Fees and better food, especially in relation to cost.

One caveat to the large portion of the staff that has been apart of the Hotels family for 5,10,20 years that are amazing and still the highlight of the hotel my apologies!
