We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Stanley. Even got a room for our daughter and granddaughter on the fourth floor so we could spend some time hanging out together. Very tiny room, but they didn’t mind. We were on the third floor. Our room was very spacious. The restaurant was delicious and service was very good. We played cards in the evening in front of the fireplace in the lobby and had a great time.
The only criticism I would give is, whatever you’re cleaning the shower with, it makes the shower walls and floor extremely slippery (as another reviewer mentioned). I almost slipped a couple of times. Also no room service? I was shocked. I caught one of the housekeepers on our floor and asked if she would please tidy up our room and gave her $20. She dropped off towels but no tidy up. Very disappointed. Also, I noticed the carpet under our bed was a full shade lighter than the rest of the carpet. Upon closer look…there was at least an inch of dust! That explains my allergies while there. I’m sure the Stanley can afford a vacuum which lays down flat enough to vacuum under the beds or replace the carpet with anything housekeeping can swiffer. That was totally ridiculous. For the money it costs to stay there, invest in some good vacuums. So other than the housekeeping issue, we would recommend this hotel.

I stayed at the Stanley Hotel ten years ago and liked it enough to stay there again this year. The setting and building are indeed charming, but a stay at this "luxury" hotel is no longer worth the premium price! The hotel's priorities seem to be on indulging daytrippers' fascination with the paranormal rather than providing overnight guests with premium accommodations and service. We arrived at the standard check-in time of 4pm and had to wait in line ten minutes for one of the only two staff covering the registration desk to become available to check us in. At the same time there were four staff manning (or loitering around?) the desk downstairs booking tours and shows, with no line of customers. That illustrates this hotel's priorities - i.e. operating like a theme park. So many resources are committed to running tours of the hotel's alleged "haunting" and offering shows by magicians, illusionists, psychics, and other tale-weavers. Meanwhile the ambience of the venue, the availability of parking, and the hotel's maintenance and customer service suffer. The 140-room hotel is serviced by a single guest elevator that barely holds six. Meanwhile, the main stairway leading upstairs from the foyer to the rooms is constantly cluttered by throngs of people who congregate on the landing to be led on haunted hotel tours, making carrying luggage upstairs an exercise in running a gauntlet. There are no valets available to help bring luggage on the trek uphill from the paved parking lot (if it's not full of day visitors) or the unpaved (i.e. dusty or muddy) lot further downhill from the entrance. We found it necessary to park in the dirt lot on more than one occasion because the paved lot was full during the prime hours for non-overnight guests taking tours. Our room was originally stocked with two regular and three decaf K-cups (really?), which were never restocked during our three-night stay. Trash was never emptied. The wooden stairs outside the back of the building, leading to the rear parking lot, are in dire need of a new paint job. Direct access into the hotel from the main parking lot is routed through a crowded cafe and past the tours/shows desk. I could go on but I hope this illustrates this hotel's failings in living up to its traditional luxury reputation.

The Stanley seems to be a work in progress as it attempts to bring the grounds to their ultimate potential pristine and manicured state. The framework is there for a spectacular exterior landscape but instead it looks as if the Gardening staff can’t keep up. Perhaps literally true in this time of no one wanting jobs.
Our room was shabby but comfortable. Again-the workings for a spectacular room, but the furniture as little like from a scratch and dent sale. But very clean and functional. Almost where seasoned veteran traveler would want it, but slightly below expectations. Again maybe lack of staff.
The Cascades restaurant served up a tasty salmon dish on the patio where we were seated at tables with a fire pit in the center. The host told me the fires “aren’t on now.”
What? So we sat in the cool to cold evening with scarce space for plates and settings just to stare at a bed of pebbles surrounded by a lucite guard to ostensibly keep us from being burned. No flame. “Not on.” Come on it’s the mountains. A $200 dinner bill. Not acceptable.
Finally, as much as we loved our night tour, when trying to go to our room or from our room to an activity, we found ourselves wandering through mazes of people on group tours. The tour guides waving their hands telling their best stories of a Steven King this or that and the tour participants looking a little embarrassed by it all. Glad they’re capitalizing on a story INSPIRED by the Stanley but it starts to feel like scrambling for revenues from the lowest common denominator rather than working to present a class act resort property.
Having said all this we will return and tie people are why. Delightful and engaging staff. All good hosts!

I would actually give a -1 to this over rated hotel. The building I stayed in closed around 5pm. You must request a refresh of your room, they do NOT come by and give you fresh towels or if you don't want to wait hours you go into the hall, find the maid turning over a room and take what you want from her cart. You empty your own trash, put bag out in hall for someone to pick up (yes even the $700 a night suites). My coffee pot failed to work. Call desk 3x over 2 hours, finally took it down and handed it to the lady at the desk. Got a new one late afternoon. The railings on the balcony need paint, the desk itself was so bad that my kid got splinters when he went outside barefoot. A glass was accidentally broken, we called to get it vacuumed up, told could be 2+hours. We went down got the vac and cleaned it up ourselves. I have had more responsive, polite, caring at a Best Western for a lot less that 700 a night. The cheesecake in the "famous" restaurant" was less than an inch high and cost a lot. Meat was undercooked and they frowned at taking it back. The town was nice, some good restaurants there. Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory was really good.

In small print at the bottom of their website, which I’m guessing few people see, they state that they are not a full service hotel. This means there are no housekeeping services. if you want fresh towels, you have to ask if you want your sheets changed you do it yourself. IMO this is unacceptable for a hotel whose room rates can come close to $500 a night

My family and I stayed in room 330 last weekend (mid February) and had a great time up until we had to go to bed.
The room was so uncomfortably hot that we propped both windows open the entire night in mid February and set the “thermostat “ to 52 degrees and the temperature remained at 85 the entire night. Clearly the thermostat is not actually controlling the heaters in the room or it is grossly malfunctioning.
I had to open the hallway door several times throughout the night just to get a small cross breeze to drop the temperature a few degrees. I even went to the front desk at 2am to ask for a fan. They provided me a small space heater, and said use the fan portion of that which was highly insignificant to resolve the issue.
This was far from our expectation of this prestigious 4 star hotel.
Upon asking for a refund their Assistant Manager Lacey only offered 20% discount. Clearly they are lacking customer service as this was their best and final offer for what was the most uncomfortable experience in a hotel we have ever had.
Wish we had better memories of our stay.

Read the reviews! They are accurate, old, no bell service (not to mention room service), you have to wonder around through several parking lots to figure out how to check in, no one answers the phone and we paid $500/night for a balcony room. Balcony was nice, sun setting in mountains but the room was bad. Oh and for $500/night no daily maid service, You are told to just bag up trash if it starts to collect and put in the hall. We didn't even try try for clean sheets or towels and we were there 3 nights. I believe the place makes it money on tours not hotel rooms. And it appears to be at about 50% of the needed hotel support staff.
Positive, the Seance and Magic shows were really good, Broadway standard and were the high point of the stay, thus the 2 stars. Read the reviews carefully and if you do decide to stay make it only one night.

My partner and I were so excited to stay here but we were seriously let down.
For the price we paid, I was expecting luxury amenities and a sizeable room.
What we got was a room smaller than anything you'd get in any chain hotel (we couldn't even open our suitcases on the floor), a shabby, cheap looking bathroom with the shower head not properly attached to the wall. There wasn't even housekeeping - you can't request for your room to be made up, only for fresh towels or for the bin to be emptied.
They do give $25 vouchers for breakfast (which isn't even run by the hotel, from what I can tell) however the wait at 10.40 on a Monday morning was 30-40 minutes and we decided we'd be better off going elsewhere.
I feel like I've been scammed and I'm incredibly angry. It sounds like the hotel used to be fantastic but has really let things slide, probably in the name of profit.
Don't stay here.

The Stanley Hotel is beautifully situated in Estes Park. The grounds are very well maintained—but it is an ‘experience’ hotel only. While it is a good place to walk around and take a tour it is not a great place to spend the night. There are no bellman—which is usually not a problem but in the hotel with tiny elevators and limited access it’s hard to navigate when you arrive. The rooms are small—as expected for an older property. But I expected nice amenities—-like good linens, towels, etc. I wouldn’t clean my house with the quality towels they provided in the rooms—much less give to guests. At a minimum of $500 a night I think they should at least try to make it a ‘first class’ experience.
The Wine Bar had a large variety of wines listed—but they had 1/4 of the bottles on the menu. It was awkward for the very nice sommelier and just strange. Print a new menu if you’re not keeping the bottles listed at hand. Just weird. The bar was very nice with great service. I would recommend visiting The Stanley—but I wouldn’t spend the night. Too expensive for the what is provided. I was very disappointed.
We did take several tours, which were interesting and worth the time. The staff was friendly and knew the information. But they try to make it a ‘scary’ experience which is fine but a bit silly.

Good condition for a historic hotel. When I arrived I asked for and paid for an upgrade to a jr suite with a nice view. The room was nice but the location on the west side of the hotel included 5-630am trash service with very loud back up and unload alarms. The view was fair but mostly the roof and loading docks. You would think that a hotel would have their services performed after 7am at the earliest. Very disappointed as a returning guest.

I don't know about the names of the rooms. The info sheet the hotel gives just lists the rooms by number. From that sheet: 401 - male ghost 407 - strange happenings (i.e. no visuals) 413 - man in "old-fashioned" clothing hanging around 418 - child ghost 428 - cowboy ghost 217 - Stephen King's room, strange shadows, other happenings 1302 - male ghost, moving objects
