This was my first stay at Zipolo Habu. It was truly a pleasure to spend a few days at such a wonderful place. Joe and Linda run an excellent operation (and make sure you have a coffee at Linda’s café across from the airport). I could tell we were in good hands from the time we landed. It’s just a short boat ride to Zipolo, but it’s a world away. The food each day was terrific. At most places you’ll be lucky to get fresh fish. At Zipolo, it’s a common occurrence. We always checked in with Stu to see what he had caught and what would be on the menu that night. We were never disappointed. I can’t wait for my next trip to Zipolo and the chance to check out the new bungalows which are almost finished. I’ve also got to book a fishing trip.

We stopped in Lola's island for lunch. The resort is pretty, well maintained and very flowery. But we were sad by the choice of the American owner to bury waste. There was an massive amount of bags and plastic bottles hidden of the looks. One would have imagined awareness of his part by prohibiting plastic bags in his island and opt for cleaning products nature friendly instead of industrial ones.

We stayed 5 nights in one of the deluxe units and had a great time. Unit was well maintained and cleaned daily. Food was great and would highly recommend the mud crab. Went on a couple of the excursions run by the resort and had a great time. Was a beautiful slice of paradise and was really hard to leave and return to the fast paced world. Would go again and highly recommend it.

When you arrive at Munda Airport, you take a walk down to the pier through a bustling street market. Harold from Zipolo Habu Resort guided us to the Agnes Lodge where our boat to Lola Island was waiting. It’s a half hour ride, but with gorgeous green islands dotted across the aquamarine lagoon, it seems like only minutes until we’re docking at the thirty-year-old resort’s wharf. Run by an American expat, Joe, who immigrated here 41 years ago, Zipolo Habu is a slowly evolving affair with newer bungalows on the horizon. The original set look very picturesque in the soft afternoon glow of the late afternoon, surrounded by manicured orchid gardens and trees teeming with parasitic ferns. A bit further up the hill, our deluxe bungalow is beautifully designed with a soaring leaf roof and a wonderful wide balcony that frames the view of neighbouring islands perfectly. It sleeps two families of four across two large airy bedrooms. While no products are provided, the shower room is clean & airy - a lovely change from the damp corner at our last resort. You can swim right out the front of your villa, albeit with a bit of a trudge across a sea grass meadow to the aqua line you can see marking deeper water with a sandy bottom. Meals are simple but have more diversity with dishes like chilli mud crab, barbecued squid and eggplant stuffed with snapper. The kitchen will also cook up whatever you catch if you go on a boat trip with Harold. And you should go out with Harold - we did two half day snorkelling & fishing trips with him that were the absolute highlights of our stay. On the first trip he showed us a beach snorkel where coral bommies teamed with soft corals, sea horses, and colourful fish. Then we caught a Spanish Mackerel (4-5kg) that provided us with delicate creamy sashimi for three meals, and Harold with the fixings for his favourite fish head & skin soup. Flying manta rays, spinner dolphins & birds of prey swooping to catch fish were just bonus features. Our second adventure with Harold took us through the lagoon mangroves to see a saltwater crocodile. We emerged to snorkel at Dream Island which was the best snorkelling we’ve seen thus far. It’s a tiny, one tree island with sloping coral gardens framed by a deep blue drop-off. At times I think I was looking at thousands of individual fish. We dropped a bouncing line near by and pulled in a giant trevally in three casts. It was made into a three-way final night wharf-side meal complete with circling sharks. We ate it as sashimi, crumbed and gently grilled with turmeric and spices. It was the perfect end to a three night stay that I wished was much longer. Would return!

Unfortunately I cannot recommend Zipolo due to the following. Trying to book direct with the resort was a nightmare thet would not send booking confirmation or answer emails even after phoning the owner twice so had to go book through an agency. When I arrived there was no greeting and was not made to feel welcome at all. The semi deluxe bangalow was OK however the mattress was extremely uncomfortable and was absoluting filthy it look like something from a dump. The shower block was below average. The fridge in the room was disgusting. Went fishing which cost over $300 caught a lot of fish but did not get to eat them nor was offered them I had to order of the menu and pay for it. The owner was unfriendly and would barely talk to you. To top the end of my stay of the owners son in law decided he would urinate of the wharf while I was having a drink in the bar I could not understand why when there is a toilet in the bar.
