Stayed here in October 05, had a great stay. The Solomon Islands is unlike anything else I have ever experienced.
The Rooms here are very good in Solomon Standards, I stayed in an Upstairs Pool/Sea View Room, and could look out the front of the hotel and see this little Solomon Islands kiddies jumping into the water off the jetty. (I wouldn't advise that, its not clean water at the front of the hotel, lots of boats = lots of oil and dirty water). The room had 2 double beds in the rooms even though I was staying by myself, a TV (but it didn't work, not that it mattered), air conditioning, a closet, a desk. Very comfortable, I slept like a baby. There is a nightclub underneath the restaurant that is open late, but in my room I couldn't hear anything.
The location, its right in the heart of Gizo. You fly into GIzo then get a boat transfer to the main township. Gizo Hotel is the first thing you see when your boat pulls up. A couple of metres to the front desk and then into your room. Its also a couple of minutes walk into the town area where they have the general stores, fish markets are out the front of your hotel. There is also some dive shops in town.
Any my favourite, the food! Oh my gosh I love the food in the Solomon Islands. they serve lobster etc for like 120SBD which is approx $ 23.00AUD. I ate lots of fish, lobster and chicken all at the hotel, good prices.
Great hotel. Staff are friendly, hilarious waitors.

I didn't know what to expect of Gizo and was pleasantly suprised to have struck lucky with the Gizo Hotel. I will admit to not having seen any other lodgings in town, but from what I heard, they do not compare to this hotel, the exception being an unknown smaller lodging up on the hill overlooking Gizo (as descibed by a fellow traveller). The Gizo Hotel is the situated on the main street opposite the wharf which operates the airport ferry. I was in an upstairs sea view room which was basic but confortable. Despite being right in centre of town and more or less opposite the daily market, it was nicely quiet for this light sleeper. The balcony view of the water was somewhat obscured by high palm trees but this just meant that it was the perfect private location to sit and enjoy an early evening drink with a friend and observe the world passing by on the main street beneath. The hotel restaurant is top notch, best in town with a good menu changing daily. Beers are average priced, wines are all aussie, over priced...but you are in the middle of nowhere. The restaurant/bar is also the place where the local personalities, NGO reps and other travellers congregate. If you're a lone traveller, this is the best place in town to meet people and there is always a bit of buzz. Staff were good fun and really on the ball, especially when compared to the sister hotel in Honiara (King Solomons). My reason to visit was personal, a dive holiday with Dive Gizo (which I can also recommend). The shop will either pick you up from the front of the Hotel or you can walk for 8 mins..no big deal, especially as the main street was due to be tarmacadamed in September 09 which would only make the otherwise mud/dust main street more passable. In summary, I like this hotel and the local area, underwater included. It was a terrific trip.

I grew up not far from Gizo Hotel, in Gizo, but as most Islanders we had to seek job opportunities in urban cities. Only work travels we get to stay in hotels, and Gizo Hotel was and still is an iconic place to stay whether on work or holidays to this part of the Solomon Islands. Best seafood you'll ever have (crispy fish & chips) served fresh. Spanish mackerel, crayfish, amongst the top dish it's surely won't disappoint. See you soon!

In my travels around the Pacific, I find it best to lower your accommodation expectations the further you move away from the capital.
To arrive in Gizo Town and find such a nice, clean hotel, with friendly and professional staff was amazing. I was attending an intergovernmental meeting with all the delegates from both countries arriving at the same time, yet there was no crises and everything run smoothly.
The food was great and the hospitality warm an genuine.
I recommend a trip to Kennedy,Island on which JFK was marooned during WW11

Response from Solomons123, Owner at Gizo Hotel
Responded 4 Oct 2014
Good afternoon, Thank you for your recent review. Unfortunately we have no records of you staying with us. Members of the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau have been staying at the Gizo Hotel for the past few days and have congratulated us on the improvements that we have recently gone through. The rooms have been completely renovated, swimming pool has been fixed and generally the Hotel is looking good. Concerning your statement saying that the hotel is overpriced will be looked into. We have already drastically reduced our rates to attract more tourists. The most expensive meal in our restaurant is the AUD$15 Crayfish Tail. You say that the Gizo Hotel is a good place for a single middle aged man? We cater for all people, families included. We are a very well respected company in the Solomon Islands. We are working our hardest to maintain the high standards that the Gizo Hotel is renowned for. We would like to talk to you more and appreciate any ideas which you could give us. Thank you

Duration of stay at this hotel, 19- 31/07/14. If you are tempted to stay at this establishment, I suggest you try and resist the impulse, perhaps stay at a guest house until this place improves, if ever. The problems that I and the group that was staying with me had are many, I shall list them:- 1. I read before travelling that this hotel had problems but it was now under new management, this is only half correct. What has happened is that the owner (Shane Kennedy) has moved out from Honiara to manage the place. 2.WIFI advertised, but the staff did not know how to access it. In the end I had to find the manager to get some sensible answers on access. However, the WIFI only lasted 3 days and it never returned again. The hotel blamed Telekom and they blamed the hotel's modem/ network. 3.Someone had the bright idea of replacing the hotel water supply pump, the only problem being that I beleive no one had the necessary expertise to do it successfully! We were without water intermittantly every day after the job was done ( 5 days) the problem was ongoing when we left. 4.You might think that daily room cleaning is a basic service in all hotels? Not here, after 3 days of no service I had to hit the roof at the front counter to get some action. 5.You thought a swim in the hotel pool would be good on a hot day? Not so here. The pool was alternately dirty, empty, full and clean, but water level dropping due to leaks. 6.Yes, this is the last problem that I encountered, but the most serious. The hotel had 2 breakins at night, where a person of criminal intent was found in guests' rooms while the guests were asleep, but awoke in horror. The story we heard was that the security staff were involved?
Summing up, Gizo is a great place to go diving and the people are really friendly, just take care where you stay. Bevan.

I've travelled throughout the Solomons over a number of years, so I think I have realistic expectations. Gizo Hotel is tired and run down, and in desperate need of investment. The pool looked terrible, and I certainly wouldn't swim in it. The bathroom was very uninviting and could do with some TLC, the 'shower' was a bare dribble of cold water (the hot water didn't work).
The door leading on to the balcony didn't lock, and when I raised this with staff I was told it would be dealt with the next day - something I was unhappy about given I was travelling on my own, with a laptop etc.
I went up to the bar to get a drink and eventually gave up and went down to PT109. I expected breakfast the next morning to be a lot better than it was, given the price bracket of the hotel. My eggs were good, but I do expect more than Nescafe instant coffee - it really wouldn't be hard to obtain some plungers and use the PNG coffee that is easily available in Gizo.
I felt like most of the staff were really trying, and they were all lovely to deal with, but they're being let down by the lack of investment in basic maintenance and upkeep. I checked out after one night and went up the road to Gelvinas, which was almost a third of the price of Gizo Hotel.

Pool was empty. Our room was broken into. I have never been more disgusted with Melanesia than during my stay here.
Seeing the owner "1950's style" sexually harass 16 year old staff.... Wow. Basically I spent my stay wanting to punch people in the face.
Good pizza though.

The most dreary accommodation experience in my life.
I spent time at this hotel last week. There was no hot water for my entire stay. At the restaurant almost all the staff weren't helpful or cheerful, and all seemed to be in a bad mood. This resonated through the whole property. The highlight of my stay here was that their local Sol Brew beers were put on ice and really cold after the hotel power blacked out for five hours. The room had air con, but was very dirty, especially the bathrooms.
Was awoken repeatedly throughout the night by locals yelling and swearing outside on the main road.
I've been in the travel industry for seven years, and this hotel is the most disenchanted bundle of timber I've ever stayed at. It was evident no one really took pride in or cared about it.
There are some beautiful island resorts just off Gizo, such as Fat Boys or Sanbis, which I highly recommend. The difference between those properties and this hotel are like chalk and cheese.
The nicest person in the whole hotel was the guy at the front desk when we checked out. Unfortunately by then I had already made up my mind that I never wanted to come back. I feel it's my public duty to let anyone else know who is considering any kind of relaxing or leisure holiday to stay well clear of this place, and travel straight out to the island resorts if they have to visit the Western province.
Gizo needs tourism more than anything for healthy growth and prosperity, but until the owners and management of hotels like this start taking an interest in "hospitality," I suggest Travellers spend their dollars elsewhere.
Oh yeah, and the safe was also broken.
