What a beautiful place, we can't recommend enough! We are already planning a return to Oravae.

Sydney Dive Charters organised our stay with Pat & Naomi for a week while we dived Gizo. Oravae is perfect for small groups who want privacy, great food, colourful corals, large shells, clams and sharks all at the foot of your accomodation.

We dived the house reef many times both during the day and night and found the waters teaming with marine life, wether it be Lionfish, Firefish, Reef sharks, large and small colourful corals with depths from only a metre to 15m+. Divers and snorkelers could spend many days exploring the islands of this Robinson Crusoe style island resort.

Gizo itself is well worth ticking off your OS dive location list as it has some great dive sites loaded with marine life. The only negative would be for us was the lack of large fish species other than sharks, we did see Manta Rays (out of season) on one of our wall dives.

The highlight for me and many of our group was diving the Toa Maru N0.2 a 446ft long (135m) length, 30m beam, Japanese passenger/ cargo transport ship which lies on her Stb side in 35m, the port hull is covered in hard corals, lionfish, schooling fish and is at 7-8m, perfect for your safety or deco stop. The wreck itself has tanks, jeeps, bottles and all the treasures of the 1940's lying throughout this wreck in calm, warm and clear water.

Water temp for our trip was 28-30degs and visibility ranged from 15-35m.

We were fortunate to travel there a few weeks ago, and had the most amazing experience. I don't say this lightly, but Oravae is one of the best holiday spots I've been to in this beautiful country, and I can't recommend it highly enough. The accommodation is simple, tasteful, comfortable and very well thought out- right down to the little details. The food is fresh, locally caught and grown, and absolutely delicious. The highlight though has to be the wonderful family that run the place; they made us feel super welcome, gave us our space, but were incredibly thoughtful and fun to stori and spend time with (Darcy the dog included). Their prices are extremely reasonable, and it's a 10 minute boat ride from Nusa Tupe airport in Gizo

A must place in Solomon Islands. Patson family is a great host. Perfect place for activities or just chilling. Don’t miss the house tree as isolated accommodation on the tip of the small island. Amazing snorkeling and swimming just a dive away from your bedroom!

Oravae Cottage, run by Patson and Naomi, along with their kids Shamia, Jeremy and nephew Junior, is a lovely spot off the cost of Gizo. There are 3 private bungalows on the small island, plus a dining pagoda and then the family's lodgings at the other end. The main bungalow has a private bedroom with double bed, and then there are another 4 twin beds in the main living space. It has a very indoor/outdoor living feeling as the doors and windows remain open most of the time for the breeze. The bungalow is made of wood and traditional leaf roof. All the beds have mosquito nets. The bathroom is attached and there is an outdoor shower. There are fans powered by solar so can run all night. The balcony extends out over the water where you have your own private reef to snorkel in and see the amazing colorful fish and reef sharks! The other two bungalows are smaller with double beds and one has a private bathroom. If you are nervous about large bugs, be warned that you may see large huntsman-like spiders or giant beetles, but I only saw a few, so managed to be ok despite my fears :)
The food is SO good. Junior does all the cooking for the 3 meals per day included and every one was delicious! He was a great personality to have around too and took us to visit the island he lives on just across the water.
The family are lovely and friendly and happy to chat or organise side trips like seeing the giant Japanese ship wreck or local village.
Overall a terrific getaway in a unique holiday destination!

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Oravae. Such a great escape having the island to oursleves. The snorkelling off the balcony was amazing with nemo's, sharks and clams everywhere.
We loved "skurfing" and had a great day bar hopping around the other resorts.
The family that run everything are lovely and Junior's food was delish.
Very special singing songs in the evening with them too. If there was a Solomons Idol TV show Shuman and Junior would win!

This was one of the BEST vacations I have ever been on in my life! The family that runs this resort is so incredibly kind and caters to all of your needs. It is a very personalized experience. My fiancé, his friend and I (American doctors completeing a rotation in Honiara) took a weekend off from Honiara to vacation in Gizo.
1. The living quarters are extremely clean and the beds are comfortable. They have added so many small details to the rooms so it is a very nature, island feel! The family owns the whole island so we felt very safe and had a lot of room to explore. You can see fish and sharks from the deck because the water is so clear! We snorkeled right off the deck and could see many colors of corral and various sea life. They also have many water activities so on our first day we played music and relaxed off the deck.
2. The food is phenomenal! The family is very flexible about making meals whenever you would like. The dishes were beautiful and they had a fully stocked bar to get drinks from.
3. There are many day trips to choose from that you can take part in at any time of the day! We did night fishing, snorkeling, and traveling to beautiful beaches. The flexibility that the family allows you to have truly lets you relax and just enjoy every second you are there.
4. The family is AMAZING!! During meals we would chat with them about the history of the island and got to know them better. We shared so many laughs with them. THIS IS SO UNIQUE IN A RESORT!! We felt very close with them after our trip, as they truly went above and beyond to take care of every need we had.
If you want more of a personalized, first class experience, I highly recommend booking this resort. It is definitely worth every penny and we will definitely be back!

This is a most outstanding and beautifully run, very personalised 'resort' in a spectacular location, with each cottage place right over the water's edge and with private access into a sea teeming with marine life. Or just sit on the balcony to the cottage and watch the marine life pass by. The food is truly award winning and served up by the loveliest hosts and family members. Diving is very accessible through Dive Gizo and Surfing can be arranged through the eldest son, Jeremy, who has a wealth of knowledge in this area. The only downfall was that we did not get to stay longer....

Stayed 3 nights and had a blast

Note: oravae offers surf day trips for all gizo tourists

Pros
-it's a family run cottage, giving the stay a great personal and homey touch. Great chats with the parents and kids (aged mid twenties)
-some of best cooking in Solomon islands thanks to Junior. Every meal is different and delicious
-surf trips
-skurfing/(scurfing?) I.e. surf behind a boat
-beautiful seaside vibes to enjoy coffees and beers
-rope swing
-junior makes random comedic films which you can participate in!
-your choice to sleep in a treehouse, overwater bungalow, or a cottage..
-dive gizo can pick you up on the way to some great wrecks and reef dives

Cons
-snorkelling around cottage not the best in gizo, but oravae offers day trips to better spots
-be prepared for rustic accommodation, i.e. outdoor showers with low pressure, dim solar lights.. which is not for everyone but is pretty typical for Solomon islands.
-if you're over 6'3 then your feet will touch the mossie net and you'll get nibbled while you sleep 😩

Nine of us from New Zealand stayed here for 13 nights. Not one of us, including two teenagers, have anything bad to say about our wonderful stay at Oravae Cottage. The Baea Family made us feel so welcome and a part of their family. We were so spoilt by their hospitality. Patson spoke so fondly of his origins and philosophy about Oravae. Junior should win Masterchef! The food was simply delicious. Even having to cook pancakes for backing Croatia in the World Cup was a joyful experience to try and treat Junior and his team in return for all the nutritious meals they had cooked for us. I really cannot recommend Oravae enough. We had the whole island to ourselves and it was truly magical and as for our own tropical aquarium on our own front porch, wouldn’t ask for more. My only hope is that many more people visit the Baea family and enjoy this most magical experience. The accommodation itself is rustic, maybe Robinson Crusoe camping. Not for everyone. Expect little power and a few days without running water but the sea is at your doorstep. Well worth a visit.
