It was the best hostel we visited here in nz. Staff is very kind! Bedrooms are cleaned every day. You get fresh towels and room service like in hotel. Breakfast includes filtered coffee, toast, cereals, marmelade, milk, butter, peanutbutter. Everything is very clean, incl. the kitchen were you find all equipment to clean up well (clean sponges, dry towels) As...

Franz Josef Monstrose is a special little backpacking hostel. The Manager, Cesar from Argentina, goes above and beyond to ensure his guests are comfortable. His friendly and helpful demeanour are a constant presence around the hostel. A must is the free vegetable soup served at 8pm. Coupled with the good wifi, clean rooms and common areas this is a tremendous...

Was a bit unsure about staying in Back Packer style accommodation, but it was absolutely great, the man on the reception was very friendly and helpful. Room was simple, clean, and comfortable. Soup was available at 8pm and was a good chance to meet other travellers, also a light breakfast was also included. Thanks for a really nice short stay!

I stayed in double room with private bathroom. The loveliest manager was so nice and helpful. Everything was new, clean, well above my expectations. Kitchen clean, free breakfast, free WiFi, plenty of parking. Next day I was in difficult situations as my room in next hotel I was to stay in was double booked and at 7pm I had to...

Caesar and his crew provide fabulous, friendly and clean accommodation. The breakfast is handy and the soup in the evenings DELICIOUS! Great facilities for self catering as well, comfy rooms, beds and great communal dining/living room. More motel standard than backpacker standard!

Soup was amazing. Just what I needed after a long day driving in the rain. Really big hostel, with 2-3 more just across the road. You can get a signal for the Spark wifi hotspot just across the road in the dining area- which came in handy.

Extremely warm and friendly reception on a rainy day. The lady receptionist was attentive and patient in advising us the possible walks that we could embark on. Soup was served in the well equipped and clean communal kitchen. IT WAS DELICIOUS make sure you come down at 8pm!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights in November 2015. We had a very warm welcome to Montrose by the staff. They were incredibly lovely. We had a twin room. The movie area is very comfortable. We had free unlimited wifi which is really rare in NZ! We also had free soup and popcorn. The beds were fairly...

It's summer in NZ, but it's cold and rainy. Montrose has been the best place we possibly could have stayed - cereal, toast, and coffee served free every morning, and the hot soup served every night (free, and it happens to be vegan!) is a great way to warm up after a cold wet day out and about. The rooms...

I never usually write reviews for hostels because they can all start to feel the same, but Montrose definitely stood out! The staff really went above and beyond to make everyone feel comfortable and at home. The soup they served every night was delicious and the whole hostel has a really nice, relaxing vibe. It's also a great value! Everything...
