Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed for 2 nights and was really impressed with the accommodation. The lady on reception was extremely hard working she was cleaning rooms themain areas of the hostel and doing the breakfast. The breakfast was very good, the room and bathroom clean and tidy. Highly recommended.

The Montrose is in a central location consisting of two buildings. I had a room with a private bathroom which was small but adequet. The room was quiet despite a number of people staying there. A basic breakfast was supplied. Check in was good with friendly young staff. I think this place represents good value for money.

I really like this place. Clean and well located. Staff was ultra friendly and helpful. The property is well maintained and rather huge. Kitchen is great with oven and everything you can think of or need. There is a huge TV where everyone could watch movies. No Wifi which was a little sad as our 3G didnt work in Franz Josef. 3 Communal computers but a bit hard to access them. Really nice place. I would recommend this place definitely. You can head over to the bars or cafe for free WIFI

My husband and I stayed here one night as we were scheduled for a helihike. For what we paid, we were quite disappointed. We had a private room with a queen bed. The bed was the worst one that we had during our entire stay of three weeks in NZ. It didn’t have a boxspring and was extremely soft! When someone got out of bed, it felt like a tsunami hit the bed. LOL. While the bath was sufficient and the room quiet, breakfast was the worst! They had white bread, jam, plain yogurt and the worst peanut butter you can imagine. Think the lowest cost ingredients ( in all categories) possible, and you get the idea. There was no one replenishing the food, so if there was other options, we didn’t have them. The coffee was so weak I couldn’t drink it. ( I love coffee!). They asked you to do your own dishes. I have stayed at hostels before, but this hit a new low and we paid over $100 for the room.

The one clear positive was the welcoming staff. They helped me by allowing me to make a call on their cell phone because mine would not work. This was appreciated!

We booked at Montrose after trying most other places and finding them fully booked. We booked a double room with ensuite - upon confirming our reservation date the amount to be paid was also confirmed. Upon arrival we were told a different price (much higher) and when we argued we were told that we had misunderstood - which was not the case. The girl at the reception was also very rude and harsh (we also saw this when she talked to other guests so we understand this is the rule and not the exception) Knowing that all the other places were booked for the night and having booked a glacier trip for the next day we had no other option then to pay the exuberant price. Montrose is a very large backpacker and it is like a bus station filled with people all the time.
Upon entering the building you were hit with bad odors - a combination of smelly cleaning detergents and dampness.
The room itself was fine - although the sheets on the bed were dirty. The room had an ensuite and TV with local public channels. Our toilet had a plumbing problem and the water would not stop running loudly - we asked for another room but the answer was that they are full. We were told that someone would come and fix it - no one did.
The kitchens are big enough and most appliances work. The kitchen we were cooking in ran out of salt - when we asked a girl from the staff if she could get some more she told us she was busy and it would be there by tomorrow (it was 4pm).
At Montrose they forget that the guests are paying customers - there are notices hung up with threats that if you do not keep in line with the policy you will lose your key deposit and also that you are being watched and monitored by cameras in the public areas (although I do agree that everyone needs to clean up after themselves and respect the policies of the place there are other ways of saying this and getting it done).
Montrose advertise that they provide free internet - they provide 2 pcs with internet which are free for use by guests - they do not have wifi services for sale or other internet solutions. As the place is so big the two computers are always occupied and as there is no time limit of use per guest, getting to one takes hours (there are usually people sitting and waiting in line for this). Also, during our stay one computer had a malfunction and so was temporarily out of use.

Can't say this place really sucks but it did for me. They have this room (I think the number is 23) which had one door no windows nor ventilation fitting 4 people. This resuled in a night with headache and stink. When I complaned about it the following morning the recepionist was quite offensive and kept repeating nothing could be done about it. I would recommend to avoid this hostel until they close this STINKING, LACK OF OXYGEN DEATHTRAP (rememer: one foor only).

I doubt whether this hostel conforms to new zealand safety standards.

Stayed in a twin, en-suite room.
This place is the basics but done well. We all know you get what you pay for. The bed was comfortable, the room and ‘en-suite’ were clean. I was there on my own, so thought the room would be a bit cramp with 2 and luggage. The en-suite was really small, you certainly wouldn’t be cleaning your teeth while your other half showered. That said you’re not going here to sit in your room so it is functional. The shower was nice and powerful.
There’s a breakfast included which was fine. Couple of cereals, toast and a variety of spreads, hot drinks.
As folks have said there’s quite a lot of noise, doors banging, music, people generally moving around. That said, they do ask you to be respectful of others from 10pm and on both nights I was there, the noise level noticeably stopped at 10. For the record I slept like a log on both nights, however when someone wakes up and starts moving around you all tend to be awake.
In terms of location, nothing in Frank Josef is far away from anything else. Plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, all within a few minutes walk. Alternatively the kitchen here looked well equipped and cared for.
There’s a few parking spaces out front, more round the back. I didn’t struggle to get parked at all, but if you are unlucky there’s loads of free on street parking.

We took one of the private twin rooms with shared bathroom. The room was clean enough and functional but the bed sheets were slightly marked and the temperature control on the radiator had been broken off completely which meant that it was permanently on maximum. We kept the room at an ok temperature by leaving the window open. The wall of our bedroom was also right next to the shared bathroom and the wall was very thin which meant the noise from people using the bathroom was very audible. As we were only here for one night and the rest of the rooms were booked out we just went with it.

The communal kitchen was well equipped but did get busy at mean meal times. There is also laundry facilities but that too was very busy, of course not the fault of the management but just something to be mindful of as they do close the room at 8pm. If we could get a quieter room with a proper working radiator then I wouldn't mind staying here again. As Franz Josef isn't a big place, everything is within walking distance.

Also for those who are driving, when we were there, fuel in Fox Glacier was much cheaper then Franz Josef!! But if you have enough range, better to fill up before or after visiting this area! Download the Gaspy app to find the best fuel prices in NZ!

Booked 2 double rooms with ensuite. Both were spotless, included towels, soap and shampoo, as well as a hairdrier. The rooms were warm and I loved the cosy blanket on the bed.

Breakfast was included and there was plenty you could choose from. The bonus free vegetable soup in the evening was also a great touch.

The stay was quiet and its location was right in the heart of town with the mountains as its backdrop.

I'd suggest emailing or calling them? I don't think you can expect them to pick up on a TripAdvisor question?
