Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a fairly rudimentary little hotel right in town with the makings of a do-it-yourself breakfast in the community kitchen. There's a small coin laundry on the premises, which is handy. Fox Glacier is a smaller and more pleasant town that Franz Josef to the north. Perfectly fine if you're not looking for luxury.

We are just thankful we found this beautiful campsite one day before the lockdown started, so we could stay here for 3 weeks during the lockdown.
First we were just happy finding a beautiful spot to stay with electricity, warm water, hot showers, a fully equipped kitchen, a lunge with tv to sit in and barbecue facilities, but quickly we realized it’s not just the facilities itself, but even more the lovely family running the place! They offered us EVERYTHING we asked for to make our stay as pleasant as possible! Unlimited internet, books to read, DVD’s to watch, super good mountainbikes to explore the neighborhood, they were always happy to help us with anything! We were even allowed to make a small campfire, so we had a place to spend beautiful evenings. So if you not just want a really nice place, but also lovely and welcoming hosts, Fox Glacier Lodge is the perfect place.
Thank you again for everything, there is no better place we could have get stuck during the lockdown!

We stayed upstairs in a queen bed room in the main lodge. The room was large and well appointed. We were very comfortable and enjoyed all of the windows we could open to control the temperature. They offer a guided walk to see some glowworms in the forest nearby. It was a very fun walk, even though it was raining. It was a nice bonus.

The facilities are somewhat minimal but we knew that going into it. We enjoyed making ourselves breakfast in the morning and talking to some of our fellow guests around the table. It was a different stay than the other hotels we used on our trip and we found it to be memorable and fun as a result.

We booked our stay here through Booking.com and were told that it was a 4 star hotel. It is not. There is no service at all.

After check-in, we had a problem with our TV. We called reception (using our own phone because there is none in the room) and no-one got back to us until we visited reception this morning.

The room lacks basic amenities like a wardrobe or drawers, and has no kettle or tea and coffee facilities, or refrigerator in the room. The fire escape instructions on the back of the door are illegible.

On the positive side, the room is spacious and sheets are nice heavy cotton, but the walls are very thin and our sleep was disturbed by noise from the campervan park.

We stayed one night at Fox Glacier Lodge in one of the separate cabins. While the cabin was clean and roomy the cabins are next to the camper van park provided by the Lodge which does not provide a good optic. There was a boil water order in place at the time of our visit. While the order may have covered more than just the Lodge the Lodge did not provide any bottled water for things such as brushing teeth. Breakfast was some eggs and other items left in the fridge for you to cook your own. Staff seemed bored. The Lodge is adequate for a quick overnight stay on your way through the area but we would not stay again.

We spent one night at Fox Glacier and stayed at this accommodation, in a chalet with a bed in the lounge as well as a separate bedroom with two beds. Communication and reception were good and friendly with an effort to point out any attractions or tours in the area. It fully met our needs and beds were very comfortable. The Lockwood look provides great warmth, and the shower was great and plenty of hot water. I'd go back there anyday.

I really enjoyed staying here. The staff were so helpful and kind, gave us a warm welcome and guided us to a warm and cozy room. There was a shared kitchen which was could be accessed at any time (Some food was set aside for breakfast, of course). On check in, the gentleman invited us to a night walk along a nearby forest pathway - this was a complimentary glowworm tour which was really fun. The guide was chilled, chatted away and took his time to allow us to enjoy the glowworms. Back to the accommodation - the bed was very comfortable and we had plenty of room the relax. Towel warmers are always a winner for me! I felt extremely comfortable in this hotel and I could have stayed for much longer but that will have to be next time I'm in NZ. Thank you to the staff :)

Lovely quiet, clean room with all kitchen facilities we needed.
A great shower room, shower did tend to blast the whole wet room though. Even with a curtain.
A separate bedroom with twin beds, and a really comfy bed in the main lounge.
The lodge is off the main road, so it's very quiet and no traffic noise at all.

Very basic park facilities in a small village on West Coast of South Island. Very wet and cool weather, stayed here only as fatigued from driving from Arrowtown in mostly misty, rainy conditions and did not want to push on in marginal driving conditions. Park offered a free Glow Worm walking Tour, but weather was really not fit for tramping, incredibly wet throughout park and inside toilet /showers.

Stayed here overnight do as to goes Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.
Cabins are clean and spacious although lay outs are not particularly practical.

The cabins are situated in midst of campsite with associated noise.
DIY breakfast in communal kitchen would have been OK if milk had been not off. No one around to tell.
OK for dyopovrr but Don't expect 4 star service

Any shuttle service from the lodge to Lake Matheson? Rate and schedule?
Answer from OFiona
Brisbane, Australia40 contributions27 helpful votes
Not sure about that - it is only 6kms so you could walk the entire distance if the weather was fine. I would suggest emailing Debra at Fox Glacier Lodge to ask about shuttles - there may well be one in the town for people without a car. You will mostly need a car for that area though - lots of driving to see the sights

Hello. Lake Tekapo is 470km away from this Lodge. I think you may have mixed up locations :-) There are a range of stay options in Lake Tekapo and Fox Glacier Lodge is near..well... Fox Glacier. Let me know if you have any other Qs. Happy to help.

Answer from Keng Hui C

Yes they do but take note that it is limited to 400mb per coupon. What I did in NZ is we got the Sparks SIM card and there is free 500mb of data as well. there is also a booth near the main road for free 1 gig data per data for Sparks SIM card user
