Do not be put off by your first impressions of the outside of this lodge. It is true that it is needing some investment but the experience we had was memorable and very positive. We had a lovely bright (double aspect) room - Tongariro no 211. We have been touring NZ for 6 weeks and this has been our cheapest room so far. Our stay surpassed our expectations. The bar area is relaxed and welcoming and the food is wholesome, tasty, fresh and served promptly. However, the stars are the young staff. They come from a range of countries and their eagerness to provide customer- focused service and their teamwork was lovely to see. Multi tasking must be a key part of the job descriptions.

Our tour company moved us here from our planned accommodation - what a disappointment! I know there are not a lot options in the area - but this was more like a hostel than a hotel. Rooms were dated, bed linen was dirty and stained and bathroom so small you could hardly move. Breakfast was equally poor. On the plus side the (all young) staff seemed pleasant enough to- and of course the surrounding scenery is unbeatable.

We have both hotel and backpacker style accommodation and yes besides the holiday park campground, the only accommodation remaining in the National Park with its unbeatable surrounds. We wish your tour company had been able to provide your planned accommodation and happy to have helped out to provide you with a bed for the night. Delighted that you found our wonderful staff pleasant enough. All linen is fresh daily from our linen provider and we have checked and not found the dirty linen you refer to; the housekeeping team must have already replaced everything post your stay. We are sorry you did not enjoy our $25 all you can eat cooked and continental buffet which includes juices and coffee, its usually well received.

We stayed for two nights at Skotel Alpine Lodge which is really a ski lodge, just before new year. This is the second time that we had stayed there, the first almost exactly 14 years earlier. The lodge is slightly rustic but still in okay condition. Unfortunately, it rained throughout our stay and so we were not able to do the walks in the national park that we had intended. There was also a leak from the ceiling in our room which wasn't surprising given the incessant rain. Dinners were okay and breakfasts were were mediocre. I would recommend this lodge primarily for its location which is splendid.

We stayed in Chalet 1 and it has big enough space for our family, our two big bags and four carry ons. This cabin has a deck and a dedicated parking for our vehicle. There’s a towel warmer in the shower area and the entry hall. Entry to the accommodation was just wide enough to lug a bag. It was a bit tricky going to the shower area coming from the inside as the doors both swing outwards but we found a way to make it work. My children loved that the Wifi still works in the public carpark at the bottom of Ngauruhoe Terrace. Breakfast buffet is $25 and feels expensive for what’s on offer. Not sure if it was the weather or poor lighting in the restaurant but somehow it affected the palatability of the food. For dinner it was a hit for my my husband and myself (we ordered the salmon and vegan lasagna), but a miss for my two children (they ordered the pasta of the day and the fish and chips). Pasta was too creamy and the fish batter was not that crispy. The clouds parted on our last day and Mount Ngauruhoe showed itself. We love that we have a good view of it from the deck. Overall it was a good stay. This accommodation is positioned well for exploring the national park.

Being that the Skotel caters for backpackers I was worried that the rooms were going to smell of sweaty washing and damp boots but what a really pleasant surprise it was! My son and I booked two nights stay to give us a little break from touring North Island before heading South and it was the best booking we made. The cabins are very very clean and compact, and the beds are comfortable with all the bedding you would need for every season. The little seating areas outside were clean and provided a lovely place to sit and admire the amazing views. The lounge/bar area is full of chunky sofas where you can sit and enjoy the wider panoramas. Or, as I did, have forty winks! It’s just a really relaxing place. The staff; absolutely outstanding! We saw the same people serving breakfast and cleaning the rooms to then being our very attentive hosts in the restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble. Antonio was our table host (I feel it’s unkind to call them waiters and waitresses because they are more than that!) Antonio was an absolute sweetheart! He saw that I was looking at my fork and wiping it - which is just a habit of mine, it wasn’t dirty - and he immediately came over to our table and replaced it. He was very friendly with a huge handsome smile and I would like to say he is a credit to the Skotel. I hope he goes far because he is the type of person this world needs more of. We didn’t see one member of staff below the age of 35 and it made me wonder if it is owned and run by young people because if it is then what an absolute triumph!! I will recommend this fabulous place to anyone who will listen ☺️ Thank you Christine and Arann Smith

A good place to stay. Perfect location for hiking. No early check-in, so if you arrive early, there are a number of very scenic smaller walks near by to go on whilst you wait. The room was clean and tidy with good basic amenities. All of the staff were very friendly. We ate breakfast and dinner in the restaurant which was reasonably priced. The food was great and there is a good variety of choices. Minor issue would be that our room (224) is near the rear entrance which many other guests would slam the door and wake us up. Would be good to put a notice up, change the door, or lock the door and just use the other entrances. Along with this, the old wooden lodge creeks with the heat changes (didn’t bother me, but my mum was kept awake) so maybe bring earplugs if this is something that would bother you.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we are delighted that you enjoyed all the hikes in this location, our restaurant and friendly staff. It's unfortunate that some guests are not considerate of others with coming and going, we have replaced a lot of glass from doors being slammed so hard, tried signs, they don't work, being fire exit doors they cannot be locked. I think providing ear plugs as amenities may be the next thing to trial.

Great place to stay right in the middle of all there is to do. Rooms very comfortable and spacious. Great menu choice for dinner but make sure you book and go early- last service is around 8pm. Lots of lovely walks to go on- staff helpful and offer suggestions. We had an issue with our hire car whilst staying here and the staff helped us to locate a garage to sort the puncture.
