2 night stay at $335/night, shoulder/off season? Positives: lavendar bath salts. Old world charm. Quiet room - mainly due to low occupancy. With high occupancy, based on sound when another was in the corridor, corridor noise would affect sleep. Clean, well serviced room. Negatives: given the low occupancy due to Covid travel restrictions for overseas visitors, Auckland and Waikato residents, no upgrade was surprising. The only view from the window was a brick wall. A shower complete with shower curtain over a chipped bath, is very disappointing in a four star hotel. No booking system for the sauna and plunge pool, resulted in families taking the 5 person maximum occupancy rule to preclude others at most times. Indifferent front desk and restaurant staff.

Hotel's Favourite
A glorious step back in time to the splendor of the 1920s. (The accommodation was built in 1929. ) Straight away one gets an impression of luxury, style & class. A high tea is available around 4pm with a selection of teas and yummy cucumber sandwiches The dining experience was superb. The staff were friendly accommodating and quick with service. A credit to the facility. The dining experience was of a michellin 5 star quality. Breakfast in the dining room was excellent. There was a vast & ample selection of food available. The rooms were tastefully furnished with a bath. A highlight of our stay was a special happy birthday treat delivered to our room for my wife!! A attendant with a baggage trolley assisted us with checkout. Treat yourself! You wont regret it.

A family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens) we had two adjourning rooms in the original wing of the hotel. Lots of space and the rooms had a great heritage feel. Views out to bushland and a sneak peak at the snow covered mountains. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food and longe area was great. Great staff. Espresso martini's on-point! We will be back.

It was really convenient to stay upstairs above the lounge and restaurant. Piano was great and I loved the food! Caesar salad was awesome. I thought it was an interesting stay, such interesting history. You pay for convenience/proximity to restaurant and also the olden day experience. The rooms aren’t flash but they’re fine (old wing). Only problem was I couldn’t sleep until 4am. Then I googled haunted tongariro chateau…

The Chateau is something of an icon in New Zealand. Located on the lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu, beautifully designed and with a great history it is one of those destinations many Kiwis have on their wish list. We stayed in the Chateau, for two nights last weekend. It is clear from the outset that the owners are doing little to maintain the place. Windowsills are in dire need of a paint, ceilings are cracked, carpets wearing. The rooms are in dire need of an upgrade and the whole place is developing an air of neglect. The service in the bars and restaurants was pleasant and attentive, but sadly housekeeping isnt at the same standard. Small details like no soap in the bathroom, no milk in the fridge. Menus were A4 photocopies. I guess that could be excused except for the prices charged to stay there. At 400 bucks a night, I think it is reasonable to expect a better overall standard of cleanliness and attention to detail. But most of all the old place needs to be looked after better. Bayview - you own a building that has an important part in this countries history. You need to lift your game.
