Loved our stay. Such an iconic building with lots of character. Nice room, reasonably priced. Great location for our mountain biking trip. We had a nice dinner at the restaurant but in retrospect we may have been better off at the pub. After mounting biking quantity not necessarily quality is important. The buffet breakfast was a great start to the...

We booked an Executive King with Spa room and it was fabulous. The room size was perfect. A lovely area for sitting and eating/drinking with a cosy gas fire and a generous sized bathroom and a lovely big king bed, which was a tad hard but comfortable enough. Beautiful beech trees outside the window and I love the old world...

Had waited 40 years to stay at this 90 year old grand dame. Would we visit again? Sadly, no. The bed was hard. The pillows were 'noisy'. The shower was in a full height bath, which was chipped. Very easy to slip, due to the height of the bath itself. Staff were professional and friendly, however, the modernisation of the...

Had two nights here on a special 'Grab One' deal with dinner, bed and breakfast. The Chateau has great character and charm, and the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with good heating. Public rooms have a lovely heritage feel. Staff were friendly and efficient. There are plenty of nice walks/ hikes nearby to suit all levels of fitness. Would...

I've only stayed once before. It has a faded glory charm about it. The rooms are ok but the beds are great. You stay here for the location and history more than anything. The dinner portions were very small but the buffet breakfast was fine.

Stayed overnight on a wet and misty day - pre dinner drinks in the sitting room and warmed up by the fireplace after having a delightful high tea. Dinner and breakfast were good and a visit downstairs to see the lap pool is a must.

This hotel needs more than a facelift, it needs an attitude shift. I love classic Grand Hotels; their old-world charm is what makes them distinct, and the staff and service often make up for minor issues. The Chateau definitely has the charm, especially in its common areas. What is also has, however, is plastic bathroom walls, loud hallways and a...

After reading some reviews in here, I was really worried. We booked two nights here for our 14th Wedding anniversary. Firstly, the Grand Old Lady is just that. You have to have an appreciation for this type of building to begin with. She has excellent bones but will need some new paint every now and again. With the exterior, I...

An icon no doubt, was great to finally stay here after years driving past as a kid. However it is in desperate need of an extensive refurbishment. The exterior is flaking off and the rooms are poor particularly given its price and apparent four star rating. The shower in our room reminded me of my grandma's shower from the 80s....

We were in a heritage room - lovely view over Mt Ngaruohoe - and it was warm even if freezing outside. The bath looked like it had insects in it, but that was just because the enamel was chipped, but the shower was great.
