We decided to Matakana for the night while on our way back from Mangawhai as it was getting late and we didn't finish what we needed to do in the area. As it was a spontaneous thing, most places we wanted to stay at had no vacancies. We read the reviews and considered the price of the room and thought that this would suffice for our one night stay. We expected it to be a small room for the price we paid but it was a little below our expectation. The lodge has a very vintage vibe. The furnishing and condition of the lodge (apart from the large kitchen that had been modernised) gave it a 40s feel. The reception and the guests were friendly and the impression we had is that most were returning guest. We were a bit disappointed to be told to park on the road when there were carparks available on site but no effort to accommodate us by asking the other guests to park their car properly. Our room was definitely Snug. The ensuite bathroom was literally a converted cupboard and there was no room to put our clothes or luggage. Fortunately, we didn't have any. We didn't expect it to be a big room for the price we paid but comparing to other motels and lodges we have stayed in around NZ and overseas, we expected the condition to be a bit better. The extractor fan was attached to the bathroom lights and the fan was loud and filled the room each time we used the bathroom. One of us was having a shower (not too late in the evening) when the guest next door knocked on our door and asked if could turn off the extractor fan because it was too loud. Conversely we could hear the extractor fans from the adjacent room during the night or early hours of the morning. The TV had very limited channels and wasn't tuned to the channels properly. The tea and coffee facilities were located in a shared kitchen. Overall, it was an interesting experience for us. However, not one that we will return to. I also think that we have paid too much for the room we stayed in. Our impression is that this place is popular with regular guests who returns for their stay regularly as there is a good "community" vibe happening with the guests we have meet while using the kitchen.

I was lucky enough to get the last room for the night, shared bathroom. Beautifully clean, had everything I needed there. Made to feel very welcome and shown around. Was told where to go to get dinner. Wonderful big kitchen with all you need. Hard to find words to describe the lounge - almost felt like out of a movie. There was a swimming pool outside which I didn't use. I had got lost getting there as there is a Falls Road as well as a Falls Street so in the end had to ring as I was going around in circles. When I got to the Lodge the owner was out waiting for me, so, so nice. Quite old school but so friendly. I would recommend this place, if you're after a flashy impersonal hotel then this wouldn't be for you I loved it.

Room Tip: Mine was a budget room with two single beds overlooking the pool but was perfect for my needs.

The accomodation was clean, warm ,fully stocked with everything you would expect for a NZ motel. We were made to feel very special and it was no trouble to talk to us about places to visit and dine. We would be very happy to repeat our visit and tell our friends of this good place to stay whilst visiting Warkworth and Matakana.

We probably expected a bit more than we ended up with but it was suitable for one night. Quite a small bed room but we did have an en suite (not all rooms do). There was a very large shared kitchen facility - no facilities in the room. Likewise a very large comfortable guests lounge. The area we were in is an old building, adequately redecorated and comfortable enough. Limited TV both in terms of channels available and screen size.

Thank you for your review, I believe you have stayed in our very small room called the snug. We will consider ways we can add to the experience in this room. Its a balancing act to not clutter yet provide useful extras. The tv will be a good starting place. :-)
