To get to the lodge you take a hand pulled platform cable car over the Rio Mindo. The property is set in the beautiful Mindo cloud forest. The private cabins are spacious and well laid out. The bird life in the area is amazing. Tom and Mariella are wonderful hosts and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived....

The experience of crossing a swing by the river is great and this is the only place in Mindo that offer it. Cabins housed in the woods promote a feeling of pure nature! They owners who live there gave us a warm feeling of home!

A most amazing place. Right by the river in its own patch of cloud forest with lovely gardens and lots of home grown produce. Food outstanding (lots of, but not exclusively, veggie). Beautiful lodges on the property, very comfortable and secluded. Tom the owner is very knowledgeable about the forest and the plants and animals, and has brilliant guides for...

My son and I stayed here for two nights last week. The property is lovely. Our cabin was large and very comfortable with plenty of hot water and surrounded by the lulling sound of the Rio Mindo. The main lodge was open and welcoming despite the fact that they are currently replacing the roof. Meals were delicious and served around...

Owners Tom and Mariela have carved out their own personal Eden in this lush jungle oasis. We asked for the most private cabin and were rewarded with a location right on the rushing Mindo river with tropical birds and butterflies for company. The main lodge is amazing and the food was excellent and varied. All locally sourced or grown organically...

Yes, this is a fabulous place. Relaxing, interesting and great bird life. We stayed here 3 nights and spent mealtimes enjoying delicious food and talking about all subjects from wildlife to conspiracy theories with our wonderful hosts Tom and Mariela. We hired a guide, Danni, for one day and he was brilliant. We were sad to leave and wished we...

We really enjoyed our three night, 4 day stay in a cabin right on the Mindo River. This sustain-ably run lodge is surrounded by cloud forest and lush gardens. The birding was great and we really enjoyed our hikes on nearby trails with our guide Tom who owns the lodge with his wife Mariela. The food was excellent and surroundings...

A late review as I thought I had already done this. Peaceful, green and lush make the whole environment such a relaxing place to stay. Very warm welcome and the most delicious food served every time. Our lodge was comfortable and warm with insect and animal night noises to keep you company. The bedroom is on the first floor with...

I read the critical reviews first as I always do before writing my own review. It is extremely important to realize this is an Eco-lodge. That means you share your space with others, including bugs. I left with a few bites but didn't care. We have to share this planet is my belief. The lighting is low...again, they are sustainable...

We loved our recent stay at El Monte. Tom and his wife have designed the perfect eco-lodge, built with natural materials and fit perfectly into the beautiful natural setting, yet with so many details thought through--like the fire pit in the lodge, boots and slippers for guests, comfortable rooms, fabulous food, all in a beautiful setting where you can eat...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
El Monte Sustainable Lodge is an ecotourism destination in every sense of the word. We emphasize nature here at El Monte, in the form of birdwatching and observation of wildlife in general. Aside from the natural focus of our lodge, we also supply many of the vegetables, eggs and more from our organic garden. Most of our energy is supplied by a microhydro plant. We are located in a 110 acre reserve that is close to the Mindo-Nambillo Reserve of over 40,000 acres. At only 3 kilometers from the town of Mindo we are within access of many the activities, such as the Butterfly Garden, Ziplines, White-water Tubing, waterfalls and more. ... more   less
