Mount Pearl, Canada

I took a drive from mount pearl to Placentia to get a fresh feed of fish at harolds hotel restaurant But anyhow, while i was cleaning my son before supper my fiance asked our waitress was the fish fresh, the answer was it always is. So i came in sat down. Nice atmosphere if u could drown out the yelling and swearing in the kitchen. Got my meal, looked fab, took a bite and i regret to say that captain high liner lost his job and took refuge at this restaurant. Upset that this was obviously frozen i asked the waitress, when he asked was it fresh your answer was it always is, she said it is fresh... Why its not?? I said no its actually disgusting, spongy and I said you shouldn't tell someone its fresh just to get rid of it and especially if you didn't know.. So after this the rest of our service sucked. Saucy staff.... To the point i was outside after my meal smoking in their designated smoke area of 50 feet when i heard three kitchen staff (whoweresmoking next to the building) say, say something to her, i will.. So i was stood behind this illegally parked van who was parked across the walking entrance to the hotel by my own vehicle, when i was approached by a cook getting into the illegally parked van, saying dont blow up my car with that cigarette.. With a very saucy ignorant tone too, i said as calmly as i could i highly doubt its possible from where i am. Her response was a gas leak, so my response was well i guess you shouldnt have it on the road then and in a walk way at that... The glares and rudeness were enough that i would not recommend the food or staff of the kitchen to anyone. Because i did not like my fish i was treated very poorly and my family were treated poorly as a result of frozen fish. Soooo beware and make sure you enjoy your food haha.. You might get yelled at. We were on our way back from farther out NL it was getting dark we were going to ask for a room but after that we just took our time and drove back to mount pearl in pitch black moose filled highways instead of staying and not knowing what kind of treatment we would get for sleeping there... Oh my, maybe my rant is a little extreme but i always thought that my own kind were polite, honest, and from my point of view i believe when someone is trusting you with their food and their place to sleep, you should receive respect in doing so. But thats the way i would treat a paying customer.

Typical small town budget diner. Quality is fair. Portions are healthy. Staff hit and miss. Nothing notable. OH wait good fish cakes. This 200 character minimum is odd. And without a visible letter counter I have no idea when to finish this ramble ramble. Lets hope that I have done enough ramble ramble to post this post about a diner that does not warrant a 200 letter minimum.

This is the fifth time my wife & I have stayed at the Harold Hotel, and the first with any problem.

The Marine Atlantic ferry arrived in Argentia late (surprise!) at 2330. It was about an hour later that we checked in and went to our room, #2. About an hour later I realized that we were a late night snack for the mosquitos. Checking, I found that there were no screens in the windows and it was too warm & muggy to shut them. Somehow my wife was able to sleep, while I spent the rest of the night in the lobby reading. Near dawn I ventured back and was able to sleep.

As I said, we've never had a problem before and can't figure out why there were no screens. As usual the room was spotlessly clean and had the normal spartan furniture.

my son had a hockey tournament so we called around and priced the hotels . the harold was a little more expensive so we figured what was 20 dollars , it must be the better place . upon arriving , since we had spent a couple of hours in a stadium , first thing was first , we needed to visit the faclities . upon pulling on the toilet paper roll , the whole thing came off the wall . then i noticed there was no bath tub , just a small shower . but i must admit , the place was clean . that is the one good thing i can say .
we asked for some ice , they gave it to us in an ice cream tub , there was no pen,no paper, no iron,no hairdryer,no clock,no do not disturb sign which the book said if we didn't want to be woken too eary we should put on the door , no menu for the restaurant , no temperature control , no coffee pot , absolutely no perks other than the television had a remote . we opened the winow because it was too hot but there was a terrible smell coming in so we had to close it .my partner asked for hand cream to which she was offered a large bottle of vaseline cream the kitchen staff used .okay , a perk is a perk and not necessary . my partner approached the front desk and asked for a clock . they gave her some old clock they had under the desk . upon coming back to the room she tried to get it to work but it didn't . she turned it over and it flashed on and off again . upon closer examination the power cord was 3/4 open . my partner was holding a live wire !!! not only was this a fire hazzard but she could have been electrocuted! we went downstairs and asked to speak to he manager and were told he was not here but was returning for a function . we gave her our room number and was assured he would contact us . on checking out next morning , since surprisingly we had not heard from him we asked for him again . the lady went back and returned to tell us he was no longer there . while she was talking to us (and before) we noticed a man sitting counting up money who we assumed to be the manager . we figured , since we were hungry and there was no where else to eat we would have breakfast . we askd the waitress if they guy in the blue striped shirt was the manager which she confirmed yes he was . upon returning to the kitchen i saw the first woman we were speaking to waving her arms and mouthing "NO NO NO!" so we got up and ordered something for my son only since he had to play hockey . we ate cold pizza in the car . the manager was too much of a coward to speak to us . i will never go back there and i promise no one will ever stay there on my recommendation .

We stayed in 7 hotels during our trip across Newfoundland, the Harold Hotel was by far the worst accommodations we chose. The staff were acceptable but not helpful in any way, the rooms were clean, however, the bedding was not. I found blood stains on my blanket. The rooms are non-smoking but smoke is drawn through the vents if the bathroom fan is on. I had to cover the vent with a towel. But by far the worst part of the hotel is the front door, there is no strut to slow the closing of the door and no rubber stopper to quiet the door when it slams against the casing. The noise vibrates through the building which kept us and our neighbor up until past midnight. I am dead serious when I say that given a choice between the hotel and my rental car, I would happily choose the car.

This is a nice little hotel not far from the ferry from North Syndney to Argentia. The staff was ready for our late night arrivals, despite the fact we were over two hours late and didn't arrive until 1 a.m. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Small restaurant in hotel had a good breakfast at a reasonable price. I would recommend this hotel for anyone expecting a basic value for their money.

Staff very rude.We sat for over 1 hour waiting on food. Watched 3 couples walk out without getting their food. My chicken parmesian was just chicken with TOMATO SOUP on top. No taste. Food TERRIBLE !!!! Long wait on refill of coffee. We had no where else to go. All the other places were full. They knew we had to put up with what they dished out. Kitchen staff very loud. Guests loud & talking in the hall. Kids ran up & down stairs till after midnight. No sleep due to noise inside & kids outside. We got nothing for our money. Room very hot. Sorry they were having a heat wave but that didn't help us. The fan just moved the hot air around. Asked for 2 beds. What a surprise when we got TWIN beds. I have never got that on any hotel, motel or Inn.Spent lots of time walking the parking lot to cool off. Never even showered just got out as soon as possible. Would stay anywhere else when we were to get the ferry. Treated like we were a bother to them no paying customers. Never tried to make things quiet for the other guests.

Harold Hotel is the preferred place to stay after the long ferry trip from North Sydney. It is a bit difficult to find in the dark, but they can give you directions over the phone. It avoids a long dangerous night drive in moose country. Expect small, plain, extremely clean room and restaurant with solid Newfoundland fare.

Spent one night here and even that was too much. Small rooms, uncomfortable double beds and surly staff. Price was not a deal by any stretch for what was offered.

Old building showing that has not aged gracefully.

Avoid unless last resort.

I am currently staying in Placentia, NFLD, CA and we just finished eating at Harold Hotel and the picture shown is not the Harold Hotel in Placentia. The hotel in the picture is much taller than the one here and the one here does not have a Thai restaurant under it. I believe this picture is of a different hotel. Because of the picture being not being the Harold Hotel in Placentia, I chose to stay elsewhere but tonight when I went to dinner, it was beautiful inside and out. Please change immediately because it does a disservice to the actual Harold Hotel
