Quirk Hotel Richmond boasts an artistic atmosphere that receives accolades from many guests, who are charmed by its blend of modern and historic decor. While the central location is a highlight for its easy access to local attractions, opinions on the rooms are divided; the high ceilings and unique design receive praise, but noise and maintenance issues are points of contention. Service experiences vary, with reports of both friendly staff and disappointing service. Additionally, concerns about value and cleanliness have been raised, with some guests feeling the cost does not match their expectations.

Very fun and quirky hotel. Valet parking was fast and easy. Very enjoyable stay. The room was spacious with a high ceiling and hardwood floors. Clean, comfortable, very friendly staff. The rooms have a kuerig in them for coffee and there is a water bottle fill in the hallway with hot water available for tea.

The service was excellent. We absolutely LOVED our room especially being able to travel with our dog. We loved the high ceilings, unique room and superb view from the 6th floor. We enjoyed having a drink on rooftop bar, food at lobby bar and the whole experience. Angel was quick to valet our car and was extremely welcoming and helpful.

We really loved the Quirk! High ceilings, comfy bed, great bathroom.

The eclectic decor is super throughout the entire hotel. It was a former department store - still has the original wood floors even in the hallways and guest rooms. The artwork is so funny. It has a strong, environmental commitment and each floor has a reverse osmosis water bottle filler with ice cold water.

It was in a great location, walking distance to wonderful restaurants and bars. There is a lovely upscale men’s consignment nearby called “It’s a Mans’s World”.

Finally, the staff was super. Miles was our valet and he was very friendly and attentive. Drew at the front desk was great. She was very helpful with all our questions.

Now we want to go to the Charlottesville Quirk!

Based on the majority of hotel reviews and the initial text from Ivy the concierge after we booked, we were looking forward to our Quirk stay. Valet was great on arrival and departure and is a separate company from the hotel.

The front desk staff seemed bored and didn’t offer any enthusiasm or even the wifi passcode. The double bed room was sparse. Beds are on platforms and mattresses slide around. While linens were clean, the floors were not and had sweetener wrappers, sequins and even a large sewing needle on the floor. Additionally, the lamps had bugs in them which you could see (see photo). Our room had terrible views of the AC roof units. The hotel was not full and I think they could have offered a better view room.

As a travel industry professional, it is clear there is no management here and no staff training. Service was indifferent at best, incompetent at worst, punctuated by eyerolls and shrugs and no inclination towards customer service.

When we told the hostess the concierge said we didn’t need a reservation for a dinner table, she kept putting together menus without looking at us and said, “Sorry, we can get you in at 9 pm.” (It was 5:15 pm when we asked.). We quickly called around to numerous nearby restaurants and were told no walk ins, and we had to be at a concert at 8 pm. When we asked the front desk to see a manager about other dining options, we pointed out Ivy gave us wrong info…at which time the manager told us Ivy is an AI bot! The manager didn’t help or direct staff to help us and said, “There are other restaurants in the area to check out. I suggest you walk around and find something,” and gave no further help.

The following morning we went to get coffee at the bar. The barista was doing nothing, looking at his/her nails, and we stood there a full 5 minutes just to see if we would be acknowledged which never happened. We went across the street to Lift which was great and welcoming.

We will not be back to Quirk and will advise others in the travel industry and our clients to avoid Quirk Richmond. Following COVID, we know good help is hard to find and there are lots of challenges. However, hotel owners and managers do themselves a disservice by not having good training programs and being present. Personal relationships and HUMAN connection are more critical than ever and paramount to a hotel’s success. I would recommend getting the valet to manage the hotel and Lift to take over the food & beverage, as that was the best experience we had.

Based on the other reviews responses from the hotel, I’ll be interested to see if an AI bot or actual human responds to this review.

I have to say I was not a fan of the nouveau thirsty pink decor, but assuming you wish to sleep there, the biggest negative of the Quirk Hotel Richmond is noise transfer from both the hallway and neighboring rooms. We could hear all the hallway noise and not just the baby next door but also the baby’s parents gently and frantically shushing him. The tall ceilings and hard floors create a bouncy echo chamber for every sound. In addition, the room is poorly set up for guests — little or no space in the bathroom for toiletries or jewelry, and the sink was tall with the faucet awkwardly set back. The two beds were not Queen sized; they were full sized. Also, no water glasses (disposable coffee cups only) and if you want a robe or to have your room cleaned, you have to go downstairs to ask. Really?

This would have been “quirky” in a mid-priced boutique hotel, but for the money this was unacceptable. My spouse reserved this hotel for a special experience. We were disappointed.

The lobby was well done, if you like that sort of preciousness, and the rooftop bar was fun. You don’t have to be a guest to enjoy either of those.

We booked two nights at what we thought as locals would be the perfect getaway to be pampered and have a romantic 2-night getaway. The Loft with king bed suite was spacious but the lower section with the seating area and large windows was freezing cold and could not be warmed up by turning up the heat. On the second day we ended up asking for a heater and a portable heater was brought which helped a lot (not sure why this wasn't in the room when we arrived). Unfortunately the sink drain was clogged which is always disgusting. Also the freezer was set to the highest level of freezing (the maintenance man did adjust something on the back on day 2 after pulling it from the wall) so the items that we had placed in there for cocktail hour froze and exploded on the first night. Also please know that you have to request glassware. Ours arrived several hours after we asked for it. On day two the cleaners forgot to come to clean our room so when we got back to the room in the early evening we had the same old dirty glassware, towels unmade bed, etc. Yet none of this compare to the fact that on the day that we were checking out after two nights stay the elevators were not working. We walked down to the ground floor to leave out the emergency stairwell exit but the street level exit door was barred shut. This is insane! Had there been a fire in this old building, there would have been a massive issue. After returning back via stairwell to the floor on which our room was, fortunately there was a cleaning person who was able to call the manager and let them know what was going on with the elevator, which apparently is often broken, and the emergency exit. I'm not sure what the woman in the wheelchair on our floor was going to do to get out but we were able eventually to get out down the stairs and through the kitchen exit. Quirk is definitely not all that it's cracked up to be. It has lots of room for improvement! Covid or not, there is no excuse for this type of service (especially at this price point) and situation. I simply cannot recommend.

Do not bother!! There’s no way this is a 4 star hotel. Room 610- floor sticky and room smells of bleach. Moldy caulk in sink. Towels are mismatched, gray, scratchy. Street noise is insane. Furniture sparse and uncomfortable. Room above us making so much noise. Phone in room doesn’t work- no one answers guest services. Sketchy neighborhood. Standing outside waiting for valet first morning, and an employee (she was wearing green staff Quirk Tshirt) car pulls up with loud rap blaring out windows, stench of weed spewing from her car. Watched her spray perfume on herself, get out, go in to work!! Opted not to get housekeeping (seems odd that they ask you if you want housekeeping at check in- covid is OVER) so needed to call for robe, fresh towels etc which never came so I had to go down to request in person. Won’t ever stay here again. It is almost as bad as The Graduate a few blocks away. Save your $$.

Quirk is primarily a stage attached to an art gallery. If you aspire to appear young, cool and chic, these are your digs! Even your dogs are welcome. But if you’re an older, experienced road warrior who boards Fido before you leave home, definitely stay at the Jefferson a few blocks away. Don’t worry, you’ll get to know the Jefferson as that’s where the young and oh so trendy Quirk staff will send you pronto (even after sunset in the middle of a downpour in what doesn’t seem to be a particularly pedestrian friendly ‘hood) if you require basic but forgotten travel items. For example, frequent business travelers have need to purchase a phone charger or a newspaper, just to site 2 examples. Not exactly unreasonable to expect these items to be found for purchase in an upscale hotel. But Quirk has outsourced gift shop biz to the Jefferson. Self service only! On the plus dude, the art gallery is indeed impressive, especially if you’re into avant- garde. However, at 8 PM, the average traveler with a dead computer and phone and a charger forgotten and left behind elsewhere, would find a hotel gift shop a lot more useful. Food could be excellent but hot food arriving hot and cold food arriving cold is definitely not a priority. Or is it now trendy to serve gelato sorta warm? Last, bring the ear plugs and the eye covers. Quirk is justifiably proud of its tres modern look but underneath is an old hotel with lots of equipment that repeatedly goes bang in the middle of the night and very poor sound insulation. Black out curtains appear to have been banished for being way too stodgy and not stylish. And hot water is like hot food at Quirk: non existent. Just stay at the Jefferson or the Marriott if basic business travel amenities are important to you.

Great rooms. Large and nicely designed. Staff was great. However, my room wasn’t cleaned after the 2nd day of a 4 day stay despite of my request. This meant I had to chase down towels and shampoo, etc. The floor in the room felt dirty and was sticky. The food in the restaurant was disappointing and the portions so small that I left hungry though the bill was high. It seems like there is a problem with the hotel management. It could be a great place to stay but is currently missing the mark.

The rooms don’t even have a dresser for your cloths. If you wish a chair in your room better be ready to complain asking for one. As they bring one up you better hope it’s not a dusty, dirty one that has sat in the basement storage closet for the past year:
The personnel working are very nice but they are dealing with an old hotel with an elevator that goes out of service and you need to be able to walk the stairs with you bags. Staying in the 7th floor was absolutely no bargain and the price is more then double other more modern and equipped hotels in the area go for.
