The grounds and pool are excellent! Not many on-site eateries but just hop the free trolley and take a short ride to all the restaurants and shops on Alii Drive. Ray’s on the bay is a fantastic bar/restaurant in the resort where you can dine and drink in the open air while taking in a panoramic view of the sun setting on Keauhou Bay. Our room was spacious but a little musty smelling. The room had a fridge and a large lanai facing the lawn which enabled us to sip our own beverage mixtures as we watched the Friday night luau entertainment. A stay with parking fees, resort fees, and taxes is a bit pricey, around $300.00 a night, but the location is prime.

The pictures looked awesome. When we got there, we were disappointed by the state of the property. It hasn't had
any major work done on it in years. It has a great location on the bay and the staff was professional and very poite
from top to bottom. Also, they have an adult pool, but no hot tubs. Those were in other pool and had young children in them all of the time. Also, one of the hot tubs was not working for several days. The restaurant prices were high and they charged a $30 a day resort fee + $20 parking fee. We wanted to play tennis at night but they said the lights didn't work.

We stayed at this Sheraton for one night and a full day. It was definitely a mixed experience. Some great service, some horrible service. Parts of the room were good while others were shocking (ants, sinkhole in our bed). Read below:

Pros

The room was very quiet and the bed was quite comfy, though very worn. We had a balcony overlooking the mountain and the bay-it was a ocean view and we liked it much better than the ocean front they tried to upgrade us into.

The pool was lovely- intimate enough to feel super relaxing with an adults only side we liked a lot.

Cons

We were upgraded to an ocean front room we ended up not taking because there was quite literally a sag in one side of the bed about 5-6 inches deep. Our regular ocean view room was quiet and the view was actually better. The room was pretty rough in places with chips in the paint, old outlet covers that were yellowed, and a toilet you’d find in a public school bathroom with the metal flush handle.

The service was spotty. The woman we spoke to when we wanted to downgrade our room was short, didn’t listen well and was unhelpful in describing the downgraded room. She interrupted and was generally “off.” It was 12 am and we were tired and really needed someone who could coddle us a bit.

Then, at lunch, the server at the poolside restaurant was incredibly rude. He told me he was busy and my questions were making him busier as I tried to get info on the fish being served which was a kind of fish I’d never heard of. He was condescending and short making me feel very unwelcome.

In the end, the Sheraton has some good and some bad. If you’re using points, probably a good option. Don’t expect much and you’ll be happy. If you’re paying, there are better places to stay.

The room was clean and spacious. Air condition worked. The pools have 2 sides for adults and the other for family. Water slide for everyone. Hotel guests Balcony to overlook and see the amazing manta rays in the evening. Breathtaking views walking around the resort. 2 restaurants on 1st floor. Coffee and food were great. The gift shop has fruit cups, sandwiches, wraps, tourist gifts, knick knacks, coffee shop with smoothies and more snacks. Strongly recommend you attend their Beautiful Luau. Staff was courteous and very helpful! An Honor and Privilege to have stayed in this beautiful resort, surroundings and most especially the staff and community.

We stayed at the Outrigger (booked while it was a Sheraton) for five days in September 2021. I was very nervous about the hotel after all of the negative reviews.
We had an ocean view room (#1312) with a large lanai. The room was beautiful and spotless. It had a dresser large enough for my husband and I to both unpack and a closet with enough hangers to hanger our nicer clothing. The bathroom was a bit dated, but that did not bother me. The shower water pressure seemed laughable when I first turned it on but it had more than enough pressure while showering and washing my hair (very thick hair so water pressure matters!!). As an adult woman I probably would not comfortably fit in the tub there, but would be no problem if needed for a child.

Housekeeping was incredible. Nothing was overlooked, down to the coffee being cleaned out of the machine each day and soap/shampoo/conditioner being restocked. The shampoo/conditioner was actually quite lovely - normally can’t say that for hotels.

Self parking was a breeze and not too far of a walk. Sometimes digging out the room key to get in/out is the lot was annoying but - not a deal breaker. Many hotel guests seemed to park outside of the lot on the street for free parking. (Lots of space)

The pool was huge, although we only spent one morning there as there is so much to do on the big island. Finding a lounger by the pool did not seem to be an issue.

The pool/beach towels they provide from a kiosk with your room key so you aren’t limited to two towels like some other resorts. This was convenient as we were snorkeling all over the island with plenty of towels in the car!

The setting is so neat, being right on the edge of the island, on the rocks. It would have been nice to have been on a beach but we had plenty of beach / relaxation time on Maui and felt we were on the big island to explore.

The hotel location was very convenient to the downtown Kona area for the handful of restaurants there. It felt like a hike to other areas on the island. My husband drove an hour for golf. We spent a lot of time in the car (you need to drive even to the restaurants in downtown Kona)

We did not eat at the hotel but did grab drinks at the bar one evening. There was live music and it was a fun atmosphere. It was not my favorite mai tai on the island (could have been my least favorite, actually) but the convenience and atmosphere were nice. They were also offering them to go.

The bed was so comfortable. I got some of the best sleep I’ve had in a really long while while staying here.

I would happily stay at the Outrigger when we return to the big Island.

We booked a trip to hawaii last minute and this was the only marriott accepting points still available. I travel often for work and have status and am familiar with Sheraton properties. I know they aren't always the best, but this-- let me tell you, this, is the worst. Since everything I'm going to say below is negative, I will share one positive, they were able to give us late check out. It's often difficult for properties to honor that during the holiday seasons. So that was a plus. The bed was also clean and comfortable.

The worst part is probably the bathroom? Or maybe the property in general which is basically 90% concrete. There is no beach on the property and the lounge might as well be a free for all with all guests. There were probably 200 people in there. The rooms do not have windows, just sliding glass doors with no screen. So you can't leave the door open, although someone did in our room because there was actual bird poop on a lamp shade IN OUR ROOM. The carpeted floors are littered with stains. The AC really didn't get above 78 degrees.

The bathroom (noted by other reviewers) is truly disgusting. Even "cleaned" I did not want to shower in it. The toilet is a gas station toilet, and the shower is just filthy.

I could go on and on about how awful this property was, but the last thing I'll point out is the resort AND parking fee. The resort fee is really annoying and the things they listed that you get like "internet" all seem like a scam. But to not have parking included in this IS A SCAM. Shame on you Marriott. Even spending points on our stay we had to pay $50/day

In conclusion, I'm taking the time to write this to help you, the reader out. If you're considering booking this because it will take your Marriott points and it's the only one left on the island, I recommend you just stay home. It was the worst way I've ever spent points and I'm VERY disappointed in our stay. I don't even have high standards.

We stayed at this hotel because it was one of two hotels on the island that accepted travelers who were waiting for their negative Covid 19 test results. It is a 30 minute drive from the airport and not within walking distance to anything.
We checked in and were quarantined to our room even though only one person needed their results. The room was not up to the standards that most Sheraton's have. The bathroom mirror had spots on it. There was a towel bar only big enough for a towel and one half. The door had a fixture for a hook but no hook.
After 45 minutes the Quarantine was removed because the negative results were received. We were free to leave the hotel but no one told us that due to Covid and while we were away from the room all day, housekeeping would not set foot in our room to make our beds and replenish coffee, cups and water. Besides this there was no cell service through the concrete block walls and the rug smelled like milldew. Pool end tables were not wiped down daily and not full service restaurant is available on the property. Not a relaxing vacation stay for the price you pay!

This is a good hotel, once you get used to the slightly odd layout and the brutalist architecture.
Rooms are not particularly well sound insulated so a decent night's sleep is not guaranteed.
Rooms have everything you need otherwise for a comfortable stay. The trolley shuttle from the hotel into the main area of Kona is very useful and was a fun thing to do.
Bear in mind the beach is rocky and black sand so this isn't a place for a Hawaiian beach holiday, but it's a good location nonetheless.
Staff members were very helpful, and the Rays on the Bay restaurant was very good.
I didn't partake of breakfast here because it was overpriced for what you got, and insufficient vegan options. Other than that, an enjoyable stay.

We booked a regular room using points but when the receptionist saw my request to have a room that can see Manta Ray, she searched and found a room per my request. Greatly appreciate the way that the staff has put in extra effort to appreciate our loyalty. We can see Manta Ray tours from our room. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Room is spacious with balcony equipped with wicker chairs and a high table. The resort is not huge but big enough for morning walk and strolling. It’s dotted with tropical plants, gazebo and benches. The best area is the one with wooden lounges facing the ocean. Sitting there, reading books or just listening to the howling of ocean gave you a sense of out of this world. One surprising bonus was seeing a family of mountain goats roaming around for “breakfast” early one morning. There’s a kiddie “beach” at one end of the kid’s pool was brilliant. The only complain is there’s no formal sit down restaurant.
The property is right next to the meeting point of our manta ray tour.
There’re masks everywhere inside the property which is a big plus so you don’t have to run back to your room every time you forget your mask

My girlfriend and I had a memorable trip to this beautiful Hawaiian island hotel. We were in a ground level room in unit 3 by the seaside pool and really liked the close proximity to the ocean; you could sometimes hear (and feel) the crashing waves against the rocky coastline. For 7 days, we enjoyed the pool scene and beautiful sunsets and actually saw the green flash along with another guest! We had some fine meals at Rays on the Bay and also the pool side bar. The hotel location was perfect for day trips to the many beautiful sand beaches for sunbathing and snorkeling. We had traveled by car to Kona's Southernmost point and the green sand beach and the following day to the Northernmost point where the original Kamehameha statue stands along the highway. There are many state beaches along the way that made great photo opportunities and delightful small cafes to catch some fish tacos at. The black lava rock landscapes are awesome all over the big island and there are a lot of historical sites to visit. This trip was truly memorable and the Sheraton Kona was very comfortable; I loved sleeping in on the comfortable firm King bed!
