TL;DR: If you’re looking for a stay that combines immersive nature with unparalleled luxury, Capella Ubud is a destination you’ll never forget. From stunning tented accommodations to service that goes above and beyond, it’s a unique escape that is worth every penny. Special thanks to Dewa, the Executive Manager and the exceptional staff who made our stay unforgettable.
Now, onto the detailed review.
ARRIVAL & FIRST IMPRESSIONS Nestled deep within the verdant jungles of Ubud, Capella Ubud feels like a hidden sanctuary from the moment you arrive. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a traditional Balinese water blessing ritual. This small but meaningful gesture instantly immersed us in the local culture and made us feel welcome.
Check-in was seamless, conducted in the open-air lounge while we sipped on a refreshing welcome drink. A member of the staff took us on a quick tour, giving us an overview of the resort’s layout and its story. Be prepared for a lot of stairs, as the resort is built into a hillside, but every step is worth it for the incredible views and privacy.
ACCOMMODATIONS Capella Ubud’s tented accommodations redefine the concept of glamping. We stayed in two different tent types over our three-night stay: the Keliki Valley Tent and The Lodge. Each had its unique charm, but both shared a perfect blend of comfort, luxury, and an authentic connection to nature.
The Lodge: A two-bedroom tent. For those traveling as a family or group, this is an excellent choice. Spacious and equipped with its own large pool, it balances privacy with communal areas for relaxation. It was here that we truly felt like royalty. The tent is very close to the main facilities, and also is the only tent that doesn't have a 'bridge' to access the tent. If you do get the chance to stay at the Lodge, definitely request to open up the "window" in the master bedroom. It has an amazing view.
Keliki Valley Tent: Keliki Valley Tents are the most featured tents of the resort. They each have different views and locations. While we stayed at the Java and the Naturalist tents, if you can, we would recommend requesting the Photographer's Tent or the Horn Collector's Tent. Be aware that a lot of people do request these tents, and may not be easily available.
DINING Capella Ubud’s culinary offerings are as unforgettable as its accommodations. There are two main dining venues—Mads Lange and Api Jiwa—along with unique experiences like private dining in the jungle.
Mads Lange: This is the heart of the resort’s dining. Offering a mix of Balinese and international cuisine, every dish was beautifully presented and delicious. We particularly loved the nasi goreng for breakfast and the locally sourced seafood for dinner.
Api Jiwa: This was the highlight of our culinary journey. An interactive omakase experience where the chef creates a special course based on Japanese cuisine using local ingredients. The creativity of each dish and the flavors along with the service made this one of the best meals we've ever had.
Afternoon Tea: Every day, Capella offers complimentary afternoon tea at The Officers Tent. The selection of teas, along with sweet and savory treats, was perfect for a mid-day break.
In-room Dining: We had a special In-Room BBQ Dining arranged. The decoration was beautiful and Madi Deno was an amazing host.
Sate Dinner: This, in my opinion, is a must-do experience. You get to have dinner at a luxurious hut in the middle of the rice field. Not only is it picturesque, the food is amazing. We were lucky enough to have Wawan and Chef Benda host us for dinner. Chicken sate was the best.
ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES Capella Ubud offers a wide range of activities that cater to every interest, from cultural exploration to pure relaxation. Here are a few that stood out for us:
A walk to Wos River Temple: A must-do if you’re staying here. The River Temple is a bit of a hike, but it is beautiful We would definitely recommend a hike down to it. Pari was more than kind enough to assist us on the way down and back.
Auriga Wellness Spa: Easily one of the best spa experiences we’ve had. I opted for the signature "Moon" treatment, which is inspired by the phases of the moon and incorporates a mix of techniques. Definitely recommended.
70's Scenic Tour: This includes a trip to Tegallalang and Gunung Kawi Sebatu, and picnic at Tag Tag. Tegallalang, while touristy is definitely worth it. And picnic at Tag Tag was also quite scenic and beautiful. Puspa who was an amazing guide made the tour that much more special.
FINAL THOUGHTS Capella Ubud is not just a resort; it’s an experience. The seamless integration of luxury with nature, combined with the heartfelt service, makes it a standout destination. Whether you’re looking to disconnect and recharge or immerse yourself in Balinese culture, this is the place to do it.
TIPS: The layout is hilly and involves a lot of stairs. If mobility is a concern, request accommodations closer to the main areas.
I’ve stayed in luxury resorts around the world, but Capella Ubud stands out as one of the most unique and memorable. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so special. We can’t wait to return!

On the second night in Bali, I stayed in Ubud Kapelle, Bali. This hotel is located in the forest. It is a jungle-style tent wild luxury hotel. The feeling of close contact with nature is really decompression
The location of the hotel is located in Ubud Hotel surrounded by the whole original forest the hotel room is a large tent each room has a separate yard and private pool very private furniture are all customized rooms are very large rooms without mosquitoes
On the day of my stay, I tried their family's spa technique, which was very professional, and I fell asleep. Moreover, the spa room was also in the jungle, with the smell of essential oils and the scenery of the forest
The breakfast at the hotel was also very good and there was a wide selection of Indonesian food at their restaurant which was one of the best Indonesian dishes I've had in two days. The beef stew was tender and the chicken was tender and the taste of the drink was just so-so
In fact, the most admirable thing should be the service of their home with 24h private butler. What is amazing is that every staff can accurately address our name, which makes people feel that they really have to do the service and feel the high level of service
When I made the reservation, it was about 1000 US dollars a night, the price is a little expensive. The disadvantage may be that it is a little far from the downtown of Ubud, it takes about 30 minutes to take a taxi. From the service, environment, dining, spa, I was surprised

This is a hotel that is not for everyone. As for us, we love hotels designed by Bill Bensley, such as the Capella: it’s a place where attention to detail, philosophy, and design have reached a unique level of perfection. The ambiance and aesthetics of the property exceed imagination, offering constant delight or perpetual amazement.
The restaurants are good, and the staff is very (perhaps too) attentive, interrupting the meal several times to check if everything is fine and if you’re enjoying it 🙂, but it’s genuinely sincere. However, there is a downside: due to its integration with nature and its location on a slope descending toward the river, the hotel has a large number of steep stairs made of small, uneven steps in rather dark stone. In keeping with the authenticity of the place, these stairs are without handrails, and there are many of them. On rainy nights, it can be quite easy to miss a step, especially for elderly guests or those with a baby. For such individuals, you need to have steady footing, stamina, and a healthy heart.
So, if you, like me, do not fall into this category, it’s best to request a villa at the top of the Property and avoid the river tents (95 steps just ro reach the still steep main pathway). That being said, this issue did not manage to diminish our enthusiasm for this truly special hotel.

This resort is sensational and that is reflected in every little detail, but particularly from the incredible dedicated, warm and kind staff who treat their guests with a nothing is too much trouble attitude. My husband is a Coeliac and we have had the best food we have had anywhere we have been on our travels around the world. In our room every day are gluten free savoury and sweet biscuits. At breakfast they have gluten free croissants and danishes made by an amazing party chef, which are indistinguishable from the real thing, something my husband has never had anywhere. What pure joy they were. But the Omakase dinner at their restaurant API Jima was nothing short of outstanding. Every one of the 10 courses (sized to allow you to enjoy them without being too full to finish) were spectacular, and made with the talent, skill and care of Ragi and Agus who are masters of their craft. With only 10 seats this intimate experience was made even more delightful by the care of Lastri, who as part of this team is also a genuine and dedicate host. There care does not stop there. They provide complimentary laundry daily, afternoon tea, pre dinner drinks and canapés (gluten free for my husband) and hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire pit for toasting accompanied by a historic film showing life as it was on the island in past days. This is the epitome of care and thoughtfulness towards a guests experience and comfort. It just divine. Pamela and Bryce Stevens

My wife and I had an absolutely amazing time at Capella Ubud, and will remember the experience for our whole lives.
We have never been to a hotel with such a great mix of incredible service, fantastic setting & facilities, and unique experience. Our tent room was utterly amazing and I doubt we will ever stay in somewhere as unique, natural and luxurious again. The small gifts, snacks, flower Bath and many other touches were so nice to find when we would return to our room. The food at breakfast, dinner in Mads Lange and the amazing omikase experience at Api Jiwa were delightful. We loved it all. Our couples massage experience in the spa was very relaxing and luxurious. I wanted to say a few words about your staff as they took the experience to the next level. I've not experienced service of this level where every member of staff seemed genuinely happy to work there and take immense pride to give guests a great experience.
Mario collected us from the airport, and was so kind, talking to us about the island, history, and culture. We expressed an interest in understanding more about local temples and Luwak coffee and so he adapted our airport transfer drive to visit a Luwak coffee plantation and also visit a local family temple, typically not for tourists. An amazing first impression for our stay. Sonyy as our culturist was very helpful, friendly and generous throughout our stay, ensuring we were very well looked after, and took time to take us to the river temple and explain everything about it and its meaning. He ensured our room and the little touches to celebrate our honeymoon were always a pleasant surprise and was always available for any type of request. Suma took us on the Mount Batour sunrise trip and was excellent and attentive, ensuring our safety at all times and making sure we had the best experience and photos, and memories we will cherish forever. Madya took us on a drive to visit to local Ubud temples and adapted our trip to also show us the rice fields which he personally gave us a tour of, and helped us capture photos. He was friendly and generous with sharing his knowledge and service. All of the staff at your Mads Lange and Api Jiwa restaurants, Officers tent, reception, and cistern pool bar were exceptionally friendly & attentive. Making an effort to remember our names and preferences and always greeted us with a warm smile and genuine warmth. Even your security, cleaning, and gardening staff were warm and friendly at all times.

We have traveled all over the world and stayed in many fine hotels. Yet, Capella Ubud may be the best ever. We have never experienced more personalized, friendly and pleasant service than we did at Capella. Everyone we encountered was helpful and exceedingly kind and knowledgeable. The two restaurants were fantastic, especially Api Jiwa. The Italian chef is a creative genius and he often spoke to us and is a most engaging fellow. The rooms, or tents as they call them, were huge with private decks and even a small private pool. The outside shower was also a nice plus. The hotel arranged to pick us up from the Denpasar airport and dropped us off at the cruise terminal after our four night stay—all at no extra charge. They also offer complimentary afternoon tea and happy hour. Capella also arranged to have a driver drive us on a six hour sightseeing tour, all after what we wanted to see. Capella’s service cannot be praised too much!

Without doubt one of the best resorts I have stayed at in Bali with a very high benchmark on all aspects of the stay.
The location of the resort is a bit far from the mainstream Ubud market (feels that way mostly because of the traffic), but totally worth the wait. The moment the car enters the property one can see the wonderfully landscaped grounds of the hotel, it's overall design based on a tent type architecture and the surrounding rice fields and jungle which has a very relaxing jungle vibe. The property however has a lot of steps and narrow walk ways and was not stroller friendly (we travelled with our 10 month old daughter). While this was not a problem, but getting from tent to the main area (reception/spa/restaurants) involved a quick hike (this will depend on where the tent is located on the property.
The luxury river tent we stayed at was exemplary with ample space, very uniquely designed bathroom and staying true to its idea of luxury camping. Each tent seemed to have a slightly different design with a unique theme, our tent was called the princess tent with the a fairly well sized pool sitting one level below the tent right in middle of the forest, a small waterfall and the flowing river. The sound of both the waterfall and the river could be heard the moment we stepped into the tent's entrance.
A special mention for the entire staff who were very attentive to our requirements since we travelled with our 10 month old daughter. They had pre-arranged for the baby cot, baby bath products and also a sterilizer in the tent prior to our arrival. Almost all staff addressed us by our name including my daughter's name. The service overall had a very high benchmark which made our stay very comfortable and the also made Capella Ubud stand out among other places we have previously stayed at in Bali.

We spent 4 nights at Capella Ubud last month (end of June 2024) as part of a longer honeymoon trip in Bali. This was hands down the highlight of our entire honeymoon. We travel a ton and have stayed at 5 star hotels around the world, and Capella Ubud stands out in the top 3. The unique design & aesthetics of the property and focus on preserving the natural environment make you feel like you've been transported to a different time, to a luxurious explorer / steampunk world. The customer service, where every staff member makes you feel you're the most important guest day after day, along with the best food and drinks (much of this were included in the rate - the breakfast and daily tea time/cocktail hour were wonderful) we've had on the island, makes up for the high rates. Do keep in mind you're signing up to stay in high-end luxury "tents," so there will be outside noise (e.g, insects, river) and light - this is what you're signing up for to be one with nature!

Around Ubud where many luxury hotels are similar, the Capella stands out with this original concept of reconstitution (plus comfort) of a camp of the first Dutch settlers. Signed by a master of hotel architecture and decoration, it is a total success. The tents (we are still far from the campsite!) are of extraordinary beauty and luxury and comfort. The service is very attentive and the small size of the structure contributes to this personalization. We only frequented the main restaurant but not the more gourmet restaurant. However, the services there are excellent. Lots of little touches throughout the stay. Very original heated swimming pool (and very Instagrammable!) in which you will often be alone swimming Be careful, however: the site is really very steep and the design, undoubtedly to keep this pioneering spirit, does nothing to make things easier: narrow and steep paths. To be reserved for guests in good physical condition. If your tent is located at the bottom of the valley, expect to burn a few calories each time you move. Likewise and unfortunately the charm of the sounds of the jungle at night in the tent is somewhat spoiled by the noise of the road which runs alongside the Resort.

Capella UBud was fabulous, great setting in rainforest, big pool, the sweetest staff, who couldn’t do enough for you. A delightful welcoming ceremony when you arrive. No organised tours, however you just ask and they arrange a car with a staff member driver, it was only $90.00 for half day. Restaurant for evening dining and breakfast great, no Bali belly (as we only ate there), beautifully crafted afternoon teas, and cocktails. They offer a fabulous dinner Omikase set ( trust the chef ) dinner, 10+small, beautifully crafted dishes. Great for foodies. We would go back to this resort considering what Australian resorts are charging at the moment. It’s a great escape.
If you are older guests make sure you get one of their amazing tented suite, ( each one Individual, and pure luxury) close to resort reception desk and restaurant, it was a steep short walk even from our tent number 10, a good level of fitness is required. We were ok, (we are a couple in our mid 60’s ) however, I needed to use the complimentary walking stick.
The only problem is this resort and Ubud, although both delightful, are far from the airport, roads are busy and can be congested. I would suggest staying overnight, before departure, closer to airport. The private driver from Capella, ( I think you get one if you stay longer than 3 nights. (They also they take you on tours on the way to the resort), if you wish. He recommended staying at Nusa Dua, in a 4/5 star resort there. We left in plenty of time, it did take 2 hours to get to the airport, with good traffic. We had to go through a long 3 hour, totally unorganised, crowded lineup through customs. Lots of angst from people who didn’t come 3 hours earlier for the international flight, no priority given for anyone wanting to get through customs, regardless of their flights leaving.

Dear Kimberley, Warmest greetings from your Capella home in Ubud, Bali. Thank you very much for staying at the camp recently and sharing your treasured impressions. It’s our greatest ambition to create a balance of tranquility and adventure inspiring our guests to allow the “everyday” to fade away. We’re thrilled the setting and energy of the property captivated you while generating a sense of discovery. Your experience and enjoyment are our greatest focus and we’re delighted you enjoyed the many surprises along your journey including the welcome blessing, afternoon tea & evening canapes in the Officer’s Tent in addition to the personalized itineraries to explore our remarkable surroundings. The Ubud region has so much to enjoy from spiritual cleansing, natural beauty and the richness of cultural treasures. Our Colleagues are excited to showcase this for those visitors curious to feel our destination. We are truly blessed to have such warm and caring colleagues offering personalized hospitality and we sincerely appreciate you recognizing this in addition to our appetizing culinary offerings. Our food and beverage selections offer authentic flavours utilizing the freshest of ingredients from the vibrant Bali Sea to the lush Ubud farms and we’re thrilled you enjoyed this. Thank you for highlighting the natural terrain of the camp and as you rightly describe, your comfort is our desire. We’re thrilled your walking stick was a practical amenity and we’re always interested to accommodate our less mobile guests in tents closer to the public areas. With Bali’s popularity returning, our airport volume has escalated and the Federal Immigration authority are seeking ways to lessen the departure burden. Your feedback makes a difference and we will share this with our hotel association to help lobby for improvement. Kimberley, we truly appreciate your thoughtful words and our greatest hope is the lifelong memories of your Capella Ubud visit will forever inspire a heartfelt smile. We hope for the day to welcome you back someday soon. In Appreciation, Mark Swinton General Manager

I didn’t pay attention to the air conditioning but I believe it was there. The place is way above luxury standards, it is super comfortable. I don’t remember ever to feel the need to check on the temperature. But most likely it was there.
