Certificate of Excellence
What is Certificate of Excellence?
TripAdvisor gives a Certificate of Excellence to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers.
I stayed at DR's for 2 and 1/2 months while volunteering for a NGO in Kilifi. Got a long-term rate and chose a private banda amongst the many options they carry for any true backpacker. Holding cultural events on a regular basis allows you to...More
. When Your boy Steve isn't being donkey of the day for some colonial settler he is harassing girls and trying to bribe them with accommodation upgrades and free over the counter snacks. And this actually happened to me. I think his exact words were...More
Hoorrible service from Steve the bartender. This self hating black man was mean and rude to black guests and refused to offer professional service. If you are black just avoid the place for your own peace of mind
I loved my stay here. I stayed in an 8 bed mixed dorm for 1300KSH a night. The beds are comfy, but its hot when you first go to bed as there is no fan. The shower is very decent and the toilets are ingenious....More
Couple of friends suggested that we try the place out. Personally, its a different type of experience. We had a great time playing volleyball. The food was quite good. Experience with the toilets.... was a challenge. If you are one a budget, well this is...More

Hi Lalindra,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review :)
The main reason for building compost toilets at Distant Relatives was to reduce the amount of water we use. There is no sewer system in Kilifi, so having flushing toilets would...More

There's a small beach just a few minutes walk. Not far to travel to larger beaches. There's possibility to snorkel within short traveling distances too. Better organise the snorkeling with a professional company, I went with someone from the lodge and it was a fiasco. Nothing else bad to say about them, distant relatives is an awesome place to stay. When I was there a couple of weeks ago there was bioluminescence but I don't know whether there's a season for it.

Hi there!
Great to hear from you! Your cheapest bet apart from taking several matatus would most likely be by bus. There seems to be at least two companies doing Moshi to Mombasa (Tahmeed and Raqib) but I am sure there many others. Ask around at the bus station in Moshi as it may be that some buses continue on to Malindi which means you don't need to get off in Mombasa and can jump off straight in Kilifi where we are!
Otherwise, if you get off in Mombasa, jump on piki or tuktuk to take you where the matatatus headed for Kilifi are based - known as the "Kilifi Stage" - everyone will know in Mombasa.
Fastest but more expensive would be to fly (airports in Mombasa (60km), Malindi (60km) and Vipingo Ridge (20km)) or by taxi. If you would like us to organize a taxi for you from the bus in Mombasa, we can also do that. Please email us when you are ready!
When you arrive in Kilifi, we are about 2km from where the bus will drop you. Any piki or tuktuk will know where we are and take you for about 100Ksh.
Some more info on our website in the "Getting Here" section! I am not allowed to post any links here sorry.
Keep in touch and see you soon!
