I loved the thick tabby walls (old seashells used for the cement, like at Dungeness on nearby Cumberland Island National Seashore) and the older antique wood furniture. Cozy sitting room and wide second floor veranda for listening to the wind in the palms and seagulls. Perfect for my stay before and after camping on Cumberland Island, limitless hot water!
This really nice old hotel is right in the heart of downtown St. Mary's, GA and on the river. The rooms are nice and clean. The staff were helpful. Location super convenient to the Cumberland Is. ferry and many good restaurants. The only issue we had was the noise level. You can hear the guests (especially their children!) in the adjoining rooms. So enjoy your stay, but bring earplugs if you want to sleep well.
I stayed in Martha's room. 2 walls with windows including the bathroom. Lots of natural light and views of the sunrise from bed. The hotel is historic so expect what comes with it - hardwoods, doors that have a bit of a misfit. Beautiful charm. The bathroom is updated and I had hot showers. This room also faces an intersection - so it does not get completely dark at night. The windows have plantation shutters that block most of the light. The room had a nice bed with a new mattress, one chair and great views. Breakfast consisted of grab and go fare - yogurt, bagels, coffee, bananas, prepackaged pastries. I arrived late in the evening after a terrible day of travel. I met Did, the chef, in the entry and she was willing to fix me an easy meals even though the restaurant had closed for the evening. Great BLT! Each employee I spoke checked to make sure my stay was going well. I was there 3 nights.…
If you love history like I do, you can't do better than the Riverview. It is authentic, and somewhat rustic but has all the amenities you'd expect from more expensive places. Rooms differ, and I chose #17 The Rockefeller because its on a corner with windows on 2 sides. Great bed and wonderful view of the water. Breakfast is limited, but this vegan was able to make do with a toasted bagel, good quality peanut butter and banana. I plan to return to sit on the second floor balcony (available to all) watch the water and read in that most peaceful of environments!
Years ago I visited St. Mary's for a school trip to Cumberland Island with my daughter. I had told myself I would be back to stay the night at the Riverview. I finally made it back and I was more than pleased with my stay, friendly staff, clean room, and great bar pub connected. If you're looking for the Marriott or Holiday Inn even this is not the place. It's over a hundred years old, so change your thinking and go with it you'll not be disappointed.
