The Algonquin Hotel Times Square captivates many guests with its nostalgic allure and historical significance, offering a cozy refuge amidst the city bustle. Cleanliness is consistently celebrated, with rooms described as immaculate and inviting. While the service garners accolades for its professionalism and warmth, some visitors express concerns over the small room sizes and sporadic maintenance hiccups. Though its central location is a hit for exploring nearby attractions, the trade-off includes a notable level of street noise. Despite its charm, the hotel's value proposition is occasionally questioned due to high costs and pricey extras.

What We Liked:
The staff, and we’d like to especially acknowledge Franny from Housekeeping for her exceptional servicing of our room; Yvette who staffed phone requests because her voice and manner conveyed warmth, friendliness, and helpfulness; and also Tyrone, from the hotel’s Round Table Restaurant, who exuded friendliness, helpfulness, and sincerity with all guests. They exemplified excellence in the hospitality industry.
The historical significance. It is the oldest hotel in NYC and has a literary pedigree with its association with Dorothy Parker and others.
The Blue Bar (My husband was impressed with one of the personable bartenders, the blue light, and the absolutely wonderful caricatures on the walls.)
The hotel’s $30 daily Resort Fee could be used in the restaurant and bar.
Despite being small, the room was attractive and clean.
What To Know:
I am a Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Member, and at check-in I was disappointed that no upgrade was available. Only suites were available. Sigh.
If the view from the window is important, you may not want to stay
in #509. Outside the window, the only view was of massive equipment.
The Round Table, the restaurant in the hotel, has wonderful service, the decor is lovely, and we loved the music from the American Songbook. The quality of the food varies from one to dish to another. We enjoyed the excellent Caesar Salad, the Calamari, perfectly prepared Negroni cocktail (my husband said it was better than the one he makes, and that is saying something), and the very fresh bread. We recommend skipping the cheesecake (pitiful) and the ribeye (mediocre).

This is a fantastic historic hotel with lovely rooms, a fantastic restaurant, the Blue Bar and a great lobby! Everyone from the Bell Men, Door Men, Bar & Wait staff and room attendants were wonderful & went out of their way to learn our names and anticipate our needs. I Wish I could say the same for the front desk staff, they were always pre-occupied, rude and surely. It is. Rey strange to me that the people actually “helping” people don’t seem to like or want to help guests. I would definitely stay here again, but I will let management know of this gross negligence. An example was we asked for a laundry bag and they said it was in our room, no it isn’t, yes it is, no, it isn’t. Well it should be, come down and get one. ( could they have sent it up?) When we went down they just pointed us to the Bell Man, anything we asked we felt like we were children being scolded.

We are also Platinum members and asked for a late check out, they said no we weren’t, we had to stay 3 more nights (which we had). They can’t give us a late check out. Ordinarily we would have let it go but they were all so rude, like our loyalty meant nothing to them but a headache and we felt belittled. We called Bonvoy and they confirmed that we were indeed Platinum and congratulated us and apologized for the Algonquins behavior.

Beautiful hotel, incredible service and prime NYE location. There is a lot of charm in the historical architecture and design within the hotel. The doorman was extremely helpful and we were escorted to our room and they ensured we knew how to operate everything within the room.

First of all, my wife and I have stayed at this storied landmark many, many times. It is our go to hotel when visiting our sons who live in Manhattan. I don't know who they paid to renovate the lobby, but Marriott should get their money back. Sure, if you dont know what it was like before maybe it will appeal to you, but those of us who knew it as it was are in mourning. It is like getting Earl Scheib to paint your Rolls Royce or Joe the house painter to restore the Mona Lisa. This is the seat of the fabled round table, it is where The New Yorker was founded in the 20s. The place has lost the old New York charm. Besides, the Blue Bar is gone. It was moved to the lobby taking away seating. The plush reds and dark wood is all gone replaced with pale vanilla and blue. Sad, just sad. There was nothing like sitting in the lobby after a day on the town sipping a drink and eating an appetizer just like they did in the 20s. Sorry, it is not the same experience. Anyhow, they didnt have a liquor license yet for the new bar and food wasn't served I guess because of Covid or something. The Iroquois, down the street and the Royalton across had the same no lobby bar service deal. so we stopped in Killari for drinks. I found our room to be clean even with no maid service except when requested, more Covid stuff. As usual the employees could not have been nicer. I used to highly recommend this place, now, to me at least, it is just another hotel in NYC.

Good Day, We trust that when you return and the space is enlivened with our returning staff, a reimagined Algonquin cocktail culture, live music, great food and warm service that the feelings about the lobby refresh will fade away. I empathize and understand that change can be a disruption to the familiar and that it felt especially jarring without any staff in the lobby and bar. As we come out of the pandemic, we are looking forward to welcoming you home to the Algonquin. Kind Regards, Willis

This was our go-to hotel in Manhattan when we would take the kids to NYC, back in the day. This was our first visit since it became a Marriott property. We stayed in a standard King. This a historic hotel, so the rooms and especially the bathrooms are small, but at least now they're cleaned up and modernized.

Hint: The ice machine is on the second floor, in a small lounge area. There is bottled water in the fridge in the adjacent gym. This area also has two large, clean private bathrooms, if you want to escape from your cramped room space and have some privacy.

Unfortunately, the bar and food services were closed during our visit. The coffee from the coffee machine in the hotel lobby was pretty awful. Better to go next door to the Red Flame. The ambiance of the lobby has changed. I sort of preferred to old-fashioned living room feel of the original, with its many private spaces. Now the seating has that open feel that appeals to the youngsters. The updated version is comfortable and as long as they don't start playing loud music when the bar opens, it should be OK.

This location is a short walk from the Times Square craziness. It was an easy walk to Birdland, and to the Off Broadway New World Stages.

The Algonquin cat is still in residence, but has had to be put on a diet, poor kitty.

Very tiny rooms, no warm welcome. The staff at the check in were very unfriendly. We had to approach them and greet them and mention we are checking in no proactive ness. Despite being an elite gold member no upgrade and our credit card was charged for a meal we didn’t consume despite being out all day and all night, sent an email asking for an explanation and no response so far. The Marriott bonvoy points haven’t been credited yet to the account yet despite numerous emails we sent. The only one time we attempted to eat at the restaurant, the food was horrible hence we went out. The only friendly person was the bellman Eddie. Maybe we chose the worst time of the year to stay here but I don’t think we will stay here again.

There were so many things to like about the hotel. The lobby is beautiful (it has its own house cat). It is timelessly decorated and a beautiful site to behold. The room we had was small, but it met our needs. The bathroom is tiny, but worked. Everything was clean. The beds at all Marriott hotels are a little hard for my tastes. The breakfast was pricy but good. You pay a daily site fee, but breakfast is "mostly" included in that fee. There are definitely better places to eat, but this was fine for our last day. The bar is too expensive. We each drink a glass of overpriced wine one night. The room was a little warm. The window AC unit did not cool the room sufficiently. There is also a lot of street noise, but you get used to it after the first night. The location is very close to Times Square and the Broadway Theaters. I'm not a fan of Times Square, but it was far enough off to be no problem. Overall it was a good stay.

Greetings Scott S, Hamlet, our Feline Ambassador sends his regards! Thank you for taking the time to provide commentary. Yes, we are branded as a Times Square Hotel, but in actuality we are tucked away on a quiet block a bit away from the fray. Our wine list has selections of all types and styles, new world and old world, and almost every selection is available by the glass. The price per glass ranges from 12$ to $47 so I do understand that there could be in some instances a case of sticker shock. Once again, thank you so very much for your feedback. Kind Regards, Willis

My wife and I have stayed at the Algonquin several times during the past few years and always enjoyed it. We were glad to be able to return to NYC for a 4 day trip to enjoy some shows and and great restaurants. The Algonquin has recently reopened after being closed for a remodel during COVID times. The bar and restaurant have not reopened yet, but we did not mind them being closed. I think they are waiting for their liquor license to be approved. When they open it looks like the lobby will be a fun place with piano music and nice vibe.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Housekeeping made up our room each day. It is undeniable that the rooms are small, especially the bathrooms. We used Marriott suite night awards for an upgrade to a suite which was very nice. This is a hotel that next time I think it will be worth going ahead and paying for a suite upfront.

As a Marriott Titanium member they did give me bonus points since no breakfast was available. The suite we had was furnished with nice traditional furniture and accurate to the pictures on the website.

The location is very close to Times Square, but just far enough away to be much quieter. We were on the 5th floor and slept fine.

My wife and I stayed at the Algonquin Tuesday 8/16 for the first time. What a classic hotel with a rich history! Although quite “compact” we appreciated having suite #1112. Too small to entertain, but comfortable for one night.

Three incredible things about the property:

The People:

George our breakfast server was very accommodating with outstanding attention to requests.

Dulce our housekeeper was very polite and available to promptly fulfill our requests.

Kevin the Doorman, helped us with important matter. Very polite and professional! (wife became witness during pandemic)

Jennie & Edith the front desk agents were extremely polite and helpful.

The BonVoy Breakfast:
Fabulous two eggs, bacon, potato, bread and coffee

The Location:
We were doing a volunteer work in Bryant Park, therefore, the location was absolutely perfect.

We highly recommend the Algonquin Hotel for the above mentioned reasons!

As a Marriott lifetime titanium member I expected much more from this hotel. We decided to stay here for a night to celebrate my 50th birthday. When we entered the hotel we watched the bellmen just stand there as we struggled to open the front door with our luggage.

Once we checked in, we were advised of a $30 “resort fee.” When we asked what we got for this fee, we were told nothing, but were given a “free” drink coupon for a drink coupon for a drink value of $35 or less (one drink only and there were two in our party). So, essentially there is a mandatory drink purchase. When we tried to use this coupon we were given all sorts of grief and told that it was only good for our cheaper drink, and an automatic gratuity added to our bill. It felt like the hotel was trying to nickel and dime us. If you’re going to charge a BS $30 fee, just increase the room rate by $30. Why offer a “free” drink that has so many restrictions and automatically causes you to incur other fees?

Once we got to the room, on the highest floor, it was extremely small even though we were upgraded to a “suite.” The regular rooms are absolutely minuscule. The rooms are also extremely loud from street noise. At one point, we actually had to check to see if our windows were open because the traffic sound was so disturbing. We liked the location of this hotel, but of the many times that we have traveled to New York, this is our least favorite hotel. The room decorations are rather old and tired. Other things to consider - the internet is slow and spotty, the staff is generally indifferent (usually when you let staff know that you are celebrating a big birthday, they do something to acknowledge it…here, nothing), the lotion in the bathroom was actually empty, and the one night was the worst night of sleep ever. There was nothing special about our stay whatsoever.
