Virgin Hotels New York City captivates guests with its eclectic, modern chic atmosphere and central location that offers easy access to nearby attractions. While the amenities are generally lauded for their comfort and design, some guests have called out additional costs and inconsistent service as detractors. The hotel's value is scrutinized by many travelers, who point out mandatory fees and high-priced extras.
Service quality varies widely, with instances of both dissatisfaction and commendation. Room experiences are mixed, with praise for modern aesthetics and views, but noise and size receive criticism. Despite this, cleanliness is often highlighted as a strong point.

I wanted to review this hotel because I really liked it. Modern, contemporary, clean, elegant and particular hotel. Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff (the only flaw is the difficulty in understanding at times, but nothing insurmountable). We stayed 6 nights in a room with 2 double beds (slightly smaller than Italian ones, but 4 of us had a good time anyway). Very comfortable beds, sheets and pillows. In the room you will find bathrobes, sheets, shower gel, shampoo and cream; shower caps and disks. An ironing board with iron and well-functioning hairdryer; also a large umbrella. There were no slippers. USB sockets and American sockets almost everywhere. Just the right spacious room with a separate and particularly comfortable bathroom area thanks to the toilet and shower located in closed and separate niches. The view from the room is wonderful (and we didn't have the one with the Empie view) especially at night with the city lights. Very good soundproofing. The free water and ice dispenser on each floor is very convenient. Wonderful breakfast room! With Empire views and period buildings. Breakfast is à la carte and is of excellent quality both in terms of materials used and the aesthetics of the dishes. The area in which the hotel is located is very convenient for everything, enjoying an area that is a little quieter than other more chaotic ones. Prices are on average a little higher than average but are in line with the services offered. There is a spa, a beautiful swimming pool on the terrace, another terrace where you can rest or drink a cocktail. Furthermore on the 39th floor there is an evening bar where there is a breathtaking 360 degree view of the city. I would like to recommend this hotel without any reservations. Many compliments to the management.

The staff is very nice and try to be very accommodating. Thank you to Darnell for our welcome check in. I reserved a superior king chamber on a high floor with the City view. The room was very disappointing, tiny, and super plain and stark. When I talked to the manager, Juliana, she could not have been nicer. She switched our room and relocated our luggage while we were out, and upgraded us to a suite, high floor, City view. More room. We were also given a $50 credit to use in the bar or restaurant which was very nice. The suite had a lovely view and was larger, but virtually bare with zero warmth. The 3 pieces of “ art” in what looks like a one bedroom apartment were sad and cheap looking. Most walls are completely bare. The promise of a “soundproofed” room was a joke. We heard loud banging at 12:30 at night from the room overhead, and next door started the early morning with plenty of noise we heard through the adjoining wall, where the head of our bed was located. The bed was too soft and squishy, and the pillows, uncomfortable foam. On the positive side, there are individual thermostats, a small mini bar and stocked fridge. There are large, community-type bottles of liquid soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner.
When we went outside to get a cab to the theater, two suited gentlemen were outside to great visitors. When we asked to please help get a cab, we were dismissed and told to walk up the next block and hail one. Not what is expected from hotel service employees.
So, rooms are nothing to write home about. Mostly terrific staff. Pretty bar on the 3rd floor.

Dear Valued Guest, We’re glad to hear that you found our staff to be lively and accommodating, and we're happy that Darnell and Juliana helped make your stay a bit more comfortable. However, we’re sorry that the room's layout and comfort didn’t meet your expectations. It’s also disappointing to hear about the issue with getting a cab. Your feedback will be shared with our team so they can improve moving forward. On the brighter side, we’re happy to know you enjoyed the bar, and it’s great that the staff made such a positive impression overall. We hope you will stay with us again for a much better experience. The hotel is very conveniently located, right in the middle of Manhattan, above the local subway, and just a few minutes walk from Penn Station. My young daughter and I checked in at 1 AM, and were assigned room 713. After dressing for bed, a very, very, very loud noise shook the room. I called reception, and they said that they would send someone to inspect the problem. After waiting long enough to get a headache from the noise, I went down to the front desk, and they said would send someone. I said that I had to get my daughter to bed, and asked for another room. They said they couldn't assign another room, as the hotel was fully booked. The maintenance men eventually showed up at about 1.30 AM. They unscrewed a panel that was covered with dirty handprints and said that the noise was the condenser for the air conditioner. They said all the rooms had this same situation, and that the solution was to keep the thermostat at a higher temperature so that the air conditioner didn't come on as often. I replied that I wasn't wiling to let the room become a broiling sauna, and that the air would come on at some point before it reached that anyway. They said that we could sleep through it, but I retorted that you could hear and feel the noise and vibration from the MALFUNCTIONING condenser at the elevator down two hallways. I went down to the desk and was finally offered another room. We packed all our things and arrived at room 3208 at 2 AM. The room was MUCH cleaner, had a useful table missing from the previous room, was fortunately missing the large cigarette burn in the couch cushion of the previous room, and offered the most phenomenal view of the Empire State Building. Moreover, there were no dirty handprints on the maintenance access panel and we heard absolutely no noise from the air conditioner/compressor for our entire four night stay. Our stay was actually great, it was just a bit sullied by the initial experience.

Great hotel and great location. We spent here one week with the family. Rooms were clean and in good shape. Our room was on the 27th floor and we hardly heard any traffic noise except emergency vehicles. Also the room doors were very sound proof. The hotel staff was really helpful (especially Jestin who helped us personally with the check-out) and they were also kind to children. We strongly recommend to take the breakfast package. The breakfast room is really nice with great views of the Empire State building. It is an à la carte breakfast with very high quality and also very peaceful. The swimming pool wasn’t open yet, which was little dissapointing to our children. Location is so great that we were able to walk to most of the places with our 10 year olds. For example the shopping streets, Madison Square Garden, Bryant Park and Times Square are within walking distance. The near est subway station is only two blocks away and we also used it a lot. Metro card for the whole week was a good investment for us. Next time, when we come here, we will stay at the Virgin hotel again.

The rooms here are adequate. The vibe is sterile to be sure, there’s no feeling of home. That would have been fine if the service had been better. Because I have a bruised rib I needed to sleep in a more elevated position. I called downstairs for an extra pillow repeatedly over a two day period and was sweetly told, it’s coming right up! So I waited, and waited, and waited some more each night, but it never was on its way up, down, or anywhere else. Then my safe stopped working and maintenance came up after only two calls. They got it open and said they’d be back in 30 minutes to put new batteries in, which is all it needed. But they never returned and for the rest of our stay I had to carry my valuables all around the city. The housekeeping? A coffee cup used on day one sat in our bar sink until the 3rd day. Because it was Thanksgiving we paid approximately $800+fees per night…so I don’t think some basic services were too much to expect. We will not return and I don’t recommend his hotel.

The lobby is the worst I ever seen. Unfurnished and unheated. Freezing cold. The room is small. When you enter, you stand in the bathroom! Very poor room service: WC not cleaned, floor dirty, replace towels missing, Kleenex not refilled, empty water bottles not replaced, waste baskets not emptied. One day the room was not done at all. Breakfast is a disaster. Waiting time for a table 20-30 minutes due to lack of staff. Then long wait for a server. Toast comes without butter and jam; has to order extra. Worst eggs benedict ever. Orange juice out. Milk for the coffee in a paper mug. Spoons out. The hotel has a nice views though. As much as you can see through the dirty windows.

Stayed for 5 nights in August with the family on vacation and couldn’t have been happier here. First things first… the views and location! Away from the madness of Times Sq but close enough for all the touristy stuff if you want. Beautifully set against the back drop of the Empire State Building. (See the photos!) The area was safe and good to walk around and lots of very nice restaurants and eateries nearby.
The hotel team were lovely and helpful and the whole place had a very ‘cool’ vibe without being intimidating. Very happy with the service.
The room felt relatively spacious for four of us considering this is NYC. The layout of the separate dressing areas, toilet closet and shower cubicle is a clever design.
The massive bonus for us travelling with kids in the heat of August was the rooftop swimming pool. Not a huge pool but perfect for a cooling dip after a day travelling the hot city. It did get busy with guests at times but we always managed to find a lounger.
I’ve read some reviews saying they had problems with the lifts / elevators. Wasn’t an issue for us, in fact the lifts were incredibly efficient. Just tap your room card and it automatically calls a lift to one of their 30 or so floors. Never had to wait more than a few seconds.
We had a breakfast inclusive rate and the food in their restaurant Everdene was excellent. All the breakfast is a la carte and cooked to order…. Pancakes, waffles, eggs you name it. Felt like a real luxury to have a proper sit down breakfast everyday rather than a buffet.
There was some confusion on how the breakfast rate worked and what was / wasn’t included but this was quickly sorted by the reception team.
So overall a strong ‘yes’ recommendation from me for this hotel. If you are going to NYC and looking for modern luxury, a relaxed but cool atmosphere and well located then this could be for you!

I live in NYC….heat waves every week so I wanted to just have a pool day so I decided to book a room and hang out at the pool.. check in was pretty simple , I was able to check in early no charge which was great!!!! Went straight to the room to drop my small bag off. Room was small but very modern view was beautiful… I went straight to the pool was told you have to reserve a pool chair on the website and they charged $50 per chair, but for that time no pool chairs was available to be booked but you could still go to the pool even if you didn’t want to reserve the pool chair!!! I had the option of reserving a poor chair between 5pm-8pm and I paid $50 , which to me was ridiculous because I already paid for the room why am I being charged extra to just sit by the pool….meanwhile you had other hotel guest just sitting on chairs when people got up for free because when you pay for a pool chair you get a wrist ban and certain people did not have a wrist ban. The pool is very small…4ft deep…. the problem with the pool is that it’s small so you have adults chilling having a vibe drinking and then you have kids being kids playing splashing jumping in the pool doing a lot so that’s kind of where the issue would be. The hotel was very clean beautiful outside area to chill… the room was also very clean they have a fully stocked mini fridge , of course you have to pay for all those items.. I didn’t try their food or their drinks because I’m a New Yorker I knew it would be over priced so I just ventured outside and got what I wanted to eat! Staff was good I didn’t really have a lot of interaction with them check out went very smoothly.. i stayed on the 9 floor and my view of the Empire State Building was nice.

Dear shamara1, Thank you for choosing Virgin Hotels New York for your pool day escape from the heat waves in New York City. We are pleased to hear that your check-in process was simple and that you enjoyed an early check-in at no extra charge. We appreciate your positive feedback about the modern room, beautiful view, and cleanliness of both the room and the hotel's exterior areas. However, we regret the disappointment caused by our pool chair reservation policy. While we do our best to manage the limited space around the pool, we understand that the additional charge for pool chairs may have been unexpected. It is great to know that you had a smooth check-out and appreciated the stunning view of the Empire State Building from your room. For your next visit, we're excited to let you know that you can now reserve a spot at our serene Exhale Spa for some well-deserved relaxation. We hope to welcome you back for another enjoyable stay in the future. Sincerely, Denise Luna General Manager

This was our fourth visit to this hotel since it opened. We are members of “the know” , Virgin hotels loyalty program and Virgin Atlantic flying club. As members of the know you are entitled to a complimentary upgrade if available. Despite availability in all room categories we were told that there were no upgrades available as all rooms were sold. The receptionist even showed us a computer screen with a zero showing available rooms. When I queried this as there were multiple rooms available online I was offered an upgrade if I paid a further $100. Hmm were we being scammed ? This clearly contravened the loyalty scheme as advertised. They also advertise customizable treats delivered to your room if you are a member. On this occasion we received nothing. The quality of the wines available in the bar and the room mini bar have seriously declined. No more Duckhorn . We had dinner reservations at Everdeen the hotels restaurant which were confirmed that day in an email. When we went for dinner we were told the restaurant was closed but we could eat either outside on the terrace( it was freezing) or in the bar. We ended up eating in the bar . Very unsatisfactory. When we were ready to check out we rang reception and was told the bellhop was busy but would be with us as soon as he was free. On going down to reception some 30 minutes later we found the bellhop doing nothing and he asked the receptionist why he wasn’t told we needed him. She told him he was never requested. We have previously immensely enjoyed our visits. The hotel felt new, fresh and had an eclectic vibe. Staff were enthusiastic, friendly and extremely helpful. This visit could not have been more different. We recognized non of the staff at reception and the hotel was quiet and dull. In fact we questioned whether in fact it was still owned and operated by Virgin. It felt more like a budget holiday in or quality inn. There are much better hotels in the area. My advice is give this one a miss.

I stayed at VH NYC in early November for 7 nights. Since this was my first trip to NYC, I wasn’t sure which area would be the best to stay in. Initially, I booked Virgin Hotels NYC for 4 nights because I wasn’t sure if I’d like the location or the hotel. But as soon as I checked in, I fell in love with both the hotel and its location. Not to mention the views! We stayed in the "Sky Chamber Empire View," so we had a stunning view of the Empire State Building—AMAZING!
I immediately went online to book an additional 3 nights. Unfortunately, the hotel was fully booked on the Virgin Hotels app. However, I found an offer on Booking.com and Hotels.com and booked it on Hotels.com, even though it meant we'd have to switch rooms. In the end, though, Miss Tercelle at the front desk worked with us to keep our same room, which was a nice touch.
The hotel staff was wonderful—everyone was friendly and eager to assist with any requests I didn't have any bad experiences with them. All were very nice and willing to assist us with all our requests....Also last minute taxi to the airport:-).
I really loved the room design. It was modern, with bright-colored furnishings that created a very welcoming atmosphere. The bed was incredibly comfortable, which is a big deal for me, as I’m very picky about mattresses (I usually sleep on a water bed at home!). But this bed was fantastic. Overall, the room was very functional and clean.
I also appreciated the filtered water stations on every floor. It meant I didn’t need to buy bottled water—just bring my own bottle!
The location of the hotel is perfect. We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel, but that wasn’t an issue because there were plenty of options nearby—street food vans (smoothies and other foods) , restaurants, and more. The same goes for lunch and dinner; everything is within walking distance. The metro station is a block away.
I would 100% return to this hotel the next time I visit NYC.

Just checked, my stay at the end of 2023 was prepaid in terms of daily/NY taxes. Unusual in the US as normally you do have to pay the daily taxes on top. Maybe it depends who you book with.
There are more places to choose from in the New York City area.
