This room is basically like staying in a communal hostel/dorm with paper thin walls and no ceiling. Cabins are like living in a cardboard box with a bed in it. Offers no privacy, no peace and quiet. You literally have to whisper to have a conversation, you're not allowed phone calls in the rooms, food or drink because it wake...

The staff at the Bowery are brilliant and the location is great, easy access to the subway and several decent bars and restaurants are nearby in Chinatown, Little Italy and SoHo. However, this is not enough for me to return to the Bowery and I certainly would not recommend the Bowery to anyone else. The website is misleading, the building...

I had a last minute visit to NY and found this as one of the only places available under USD200 per night. I had an original cabin. Do not stay here if you have a choice. Although the location is convenient the area is grungey. The 'cabins' are in fact more like cabinets - you have a single bed with...

If you're looking for a hostel experience that's a cut above, this place is awesome. The private partitions give each guest privacy and your own space, secure luggage storage etc. in a way you can't get at a hostel. However, you still have the noise levels of your average hostel (earplugs highly recommended) as everyone is effectively sleeping on one...

I first came here this summer for a friend's wedding. I have to say its exterior is better than the interior. It looks spacious and elegant from outside.I'm stayed in a room and enjoyed their lovely accommodations as well. Thank you for your hospitality.

If you stay there on your own it might be OK. I am 1,86 meter (6.1 foot) tall and I coulndn't stretch myself out in the bed. Well, if you want to visit NY and don't give a fork on the appearance of your hotel room this is your place. Staff is friendly and helpful. You will hear every noise...

Dear Beckedorf, Thank you for staying with us at The Bowery House. Our Original Cabins are the smallest and can be tight for tall people. Next time, book the Twin Cabin which is an affordable single cabin, it just has a larger single bed. We are a hostel and not a hotel, just to be clear. We offer clean, comfortable,...

The workers were great, friendly etc. the place was clean. But they did not advertise that it was community bathrooms. I surprised my wife with a night in the city then we both were surprised and not in the good kind of surprise.

Staying in Nolita

Neighbourhood Profile
Nolita
Despite being just off of busy Houston Street, Nolita maintains a low-key vibe that makes it a pleasant retreat in the heart of lower Manhattan. Short for “North of Little Italy,” Nolita was once considered to be part of Little Italy. Today, the neighbourhood is popular with young fashionistas popping in and out of the chic independent boutiques that line Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Streets. In addition to shopping, there are cozy restaurants and sidewalk cafes serving everything from new-school Italian food to the world-famous cronuts. While small in size (Nolita stretches just a few blocks in each direction), it’s a great neighbourhood to spend an afternoon people watching, window-shopping, and grabbing a bite to eat.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our property, 220 Bowery, was built in 1927 as a manufacturing building. It operated in this capacity until it was reborn as The Prince Hotel in the 1940’s to serve as temporary lodging for soldiers returning home from World War II. All floors of The Prince Hotel were rebuilt with single room cabins that were just large enough for a bed and storage of essential items. The bathrooms were made communal so that the hotel operators could maximize its occupancy and house as many soldiers as possible. With its prime location and easy access to vices such as gambling, prostitution and saloons - some of the soldiers never left and decided to make the majority of the 200 cabins their long-term homes. It was in these single rooms that many of the Bowery’s most eccentric characters lived for decades adding to the lore and drama of New York’s former skid row. At The Bowery House, we have decided to preserve and restore every detail of the remarkable 1940’s cabin craftsmanship and in turn provide unique, authentic and historic accommodations to travelers from around the world. Part museum and part hotel, we hope you enjoy not only the neighborhood but also the living history that is The Bowery House. ... more   less
