Detailed Reviews
I stayed at this hotel August 8 - 9, 2012. I am a frequent guest at this hotel, and have Platinum Elite status in the Priority Club. I do know that this hotel is under a new General Manager, who I have not met. The past GMs always took the time to meet me.
Upon check-in, I was greeted by name, and thanked for being a Priority Club member. It was late evening, but I was given my usual suite.
Everything was in place, but I did encounter a major problem. After using the restroom, the drain in the floor started backing up, and sewage ended up all over the floor. I did call the front desk, and they came and checked it out. The guy just shrugged his shoulders and muttered, "Oh, there is a clog upstairs in the room above you, and it must be breaking down." Maintenance is gone for the evening, but it will be taken care of in the morning.
I asked if I could change rooms, and he said I guess.
I packed my stuff up and went to the front desk (without anyone offereing help). The front desk then assigned me to a Handicapped King room, where the bed was broken down. NOT ACCEPTABLE!
I went back to the front desk again, and received a third room, The final room was a double non-smoking. It was ok.
The layout for this room was ok, but had a couple of complaints. The lightswitch for the room is not in a convenient place, and walking into a dark room, it was very difficult to find. You literally had to walk in past the bathroom to find the lightswitch. The bathroom was very small and noisy. Like many hotel rooms, there was a shortage of outlets.
Breakfast was ok, nothing special.
Upon checking out, I had to retell what happened. I don't know if it was ever passed on to management.

Surprised at how nice this hotel turned out to be- we did ask to be away from the water park area- to avoid the noise and heat off of the dome. The staff was very nice and the housekeeping was great. We went through a lot of towels during our stay and we were always well stocked.
The beds were comfortable. The bathroom was clean.
We did not use the pool area, as we were there for a baseball tournament, but it looked great and the kids that were there were enjoying the slide!
The breakfast was very good - with different choices daily- usually we eat at the hotel once or twice during a 5 day stay, but this breakfast was good enough to eat everyday we were there.
Safe parking lot and area.

I am currently at this hotel. I've never felt compelled to write a negative review while still at an establishment, but I've been up all night thanks to the crazy-loud broken fan in my room, so why not.
This place is a disaster. I cannot believe I paid $161 actual dollars for the room. Also worth noting that, after talking to a group of people last night (because people were literally gathering in droves to complain about the incompetence -- it was sort of like therapy), I'm fully expecting to get charged twice for this room. Apparently it happened to nearly everyone, and the manager had yet to resolve the issue.
Okay, here we go:
PROS
--My kids think the pool/slide is the best. They had a blast. I tried to ignore the weird green tinge to the hot tub.
--The place hasn't been updated since the 70's. The Griswold's totally stayed here. It's so retro that it's probably cool again, so that's sort of a plus.
CONS
-- Took 45 minutes to check in, because somehow this joint is sold out (softball tournament) and they overbooked the rooms. The poor front desk receptionist looked ready to quit, and kept saying her manager had "just left". She finally did find us a room after multiple tries.
-- We get in our room. No towels at all -- not even a hand towel. Also no sheets, pillows or blankets for the sleeper sofa. I call, because it's getting late, and kids need to sleep. An hour later -- nothing. I call again. An hour later, I go downstairs, where I get to hang with the mob of other people just trying to get a damn towel or sheet at 10pm. The hotel has none. One person told me an urban legend about a guy who has been here for 5 days with no towels. I kind of believe it. Finally, at 10:30pm, we get: 2 towels, 2 top sheets, 1 pillow and 1 hand towel for our family of 4. I give up.
--The restaurant connected to the hotel gets decent reviews, but when we went to eat there on Friday night it was closed. I asked the manager why, and she said "we had to shut it down." Hmmm. And, to that end, there's no alcohol to buy here. OMG.
--Other things I learned from all my new friends: One guy's car was broken into the night before in the hotel parking lot. There was a situation involving a fugitive hiding out at the hotel and US Marshalls taking him down earlier this week. Someone got ice out of the ice machine and there was a whole fingernail in there. Mmmmm.
--There's also little things, like the giant patch of mold growing on the ceiling of my room over my head. But it hardly even seems worth worrying about at this point.
I could probably overlook most of this, if I had paid -- say -- $23 for this room. But for $161, I am. Just. Aggravated.

We were so excited to find a Ramada so close to the highway after a long travel day and the reviews were decent, so we booked it. We drove more than 8 hours on our first day of cross country travel (with two more days ahead of us). To say we were ready for a quiet, peaceful environment is an understatement. Imagine our surprise when we were given a room assignment adjacent to the lobby pool playground with a Quinceanera party just starting up in the ballroom directly across from our door. It's 8:30 pm and the music is so loud that we can't even hear our television with the volume as loud as it will go. I am told the party goes until 11 pm. As we arrived in our room, we entered from the lobby side, we noticed that the door at the back of the room was open and unlocked and the tv was on. When I asked for different room, I was told that we could not get another room with a refrigerator, which we needed, due to the food we were carrying with us. Unsure what else to do at the late hour, we brought our bags up to the room. As we turned the corner, the added surprise became apparent. Just a few doors down the hall were two armed police officers standing guard in the hallway. So, not only did we have a noisy lobby playground pool outside our door, the pounding base from the party across the hall, screaming kids running up and down the halls, but we now discovered that a prisoner was being guarded just a few doors down the hall. It feels like a nightmare. I can't understand how a hotel that charges rates over $100 a night can allow their guests to be treated with such blatant disrespect. Travelers looking for a peaceful respite from the road--beware!

The breakfast had half, to three fourths, cooked bacon, three fourths cooked, old tasting sausage, runny, milky eggs, and cool, bland biscuits. The sealed cartons of milk was good. Had a sore throat the day after swimming the pool. Seen many kids dropped off at the motel to swim. The pool was packed with kids. The motel contracted out for a wedding dance and a reunion. People partied past two thirty in the morning in various rooms. The staff did little to curtail this. Many complaints were called to the desk. I called three times over two hours. Lost five hours of needed sleep. At one thirty in the morning, I was offered a room away from some party rooms. Found that many of the partiers were not hotel guests (by staff's admittance). The staff cowarded to these people and let them go on, which is against the motel's policy (their words again). Was also offered a free breakfast by 'J' for my lack of sleep. Just too kind of an offer. Breakfasts are free anyway. 'J' also avoided referring me to the management. I stay in Topeka a lot. Not here again. Priceline, take note. And I'm not done here. A very poor showing overall.

I called the Holiday Inn 3 months before I needed to stay, for reservations. They assured me that they could give me the rooms I needed. I'm handicapped and needed two rooms connected. When I got to the hotel they didn't have the rooms requested three months earlier. They only had two rooms on the second floor and they weren't even close together. I wasn't happy needless to say and I was grumbling to my husband. The shift supervisor told us that he had the right to refuse service to anyone. and that we were not welcome to stay at the Holiday Inn. I found another hotel to stay in but I will never be treated so shamefully again.

STAY AWAY---This location is deplorable. It is under transfer of ownership and every corner they can cut costs they are doing so.
It was pretty much vacant--and creepy (think of the movie "The Shining").
I ended up there when I had to come to town short notice on a family emergency, and was helped by an acquaintance to find lodging (as I was unfamiliar with the area). Online they offered a reasonable price, but over the phone the property was trying to get $20 more for the room.
Checked out the next morning (as fast as I could) and found 100% better lodging for only $6 more than they were getting.

Responded 26 Dec 2016
No, the ownership is still the same, but you are correct that we have new management. I am sorry that you were disappointed with our service as we make the transition. I understand you must feel we are trying to cut corners, but that is far from the truth. Unsatisfied with previous management, new management was installed specifically to improve the guest experience. We are still working out some of our service issues, so we are grateful that you took the time to provide us feedback (the feedback is shared with the staff). I also understand that you stayed during a quiet, low-occupancy week (my guess in mid-December). But this should not have affected the level of service you received.

I booked this hotel specifically because they allowed pets. I know that requirement limited my options in Topeka, but I will explore other options if I travel through Topeka again. I requested a "quieter" room on the 1st floor to make it easier to take my dog out and I was given a room at the back of the hotel. I was surprised when I saw the sign on the exterior door closest to my room that all doors other than the front door are locked and can't be used after 10pm. It made it more of a hassle to have to walk my dog through the hotel halls and lobby to reach the front door when I needed to take her outside! As far the room itself, possibly because I had a pet I was given a lesser quality room. The carpet in the room had stains and the bathroom floor was not very clean either. Hard bed!
On a side note, I didn't realize when I booked the hotel that they had an indoor waterslide/pool right in the middle of the hotel. If you have children and they need to burn off some energy, that feature would be attractive.
