Detailed Reviews
I have stayed at hundreds of hotels in my lifetime and have never experienced the likes of what this hotel acts like. They seemed totally ungrateful and uncaring and a middle aged blonde lady with glasses was flat out hateful. #1) because it is a weekend when 2000 kid wrestlers and families/guest are in town- they attempt to raise there rates to 140 plus dollars a night (from the standard 80) and are upset if you booked through a third party at a lower rate. 2) dont particularly care for kids but sure are willing to take the parents money --[ your hotel is full- deal with it and be grateful for the business that is a 1.25 million $ boon to the local economy] 3) no daily maid service and it apparently puts them out if you ask for your towels to be exchanged. 4) no computers/ business center as advertised because the blonde gal angrily expressed (Friday early afternoon) it (internet) went out and would not be fixed til Monday although i saw Geek squad vans in the area. 5) gave hateful and intrusive glances at people entering and leaving premises as if they were going to take something from hotel or sneak someone/carry something in. 6) watched her snack center like a hawk and made you feel very unwelcome when this is not a unique offering to this hotel but a Candlewood feature. -- She was the worse of staff and others i suppose are just taking orders but geesh , i would think she and underlings must be very unhappy running a hotel and needs badly to learn some people skills. - I will also be contacting the Topeka Visitors Bureau as I highly doubt they would ever want to steer folks this unfortunate direction.

I love staying at Candlewood suites around the nation but this one needs a serious makeover where customer service is concerned.
When you are on the road from home away on business away from the people you love you want to feel "at home" at least when you arrive at your hotel.
Well the (young blonde) lady at the front desk needs a serious attitude adjustment. She never smiles, never says hello. Her attitude makes you feel like you are bothering her and she spends most of her time watching tv or talking on the phone.
The fax machine doesn't work and no one cares.
"What DVD's or videos do you have?" - Response "The list is upstairs in your room" but geesh - I want to see the list of videos you have now? Duh. I know they have a list at the front desk - they all do. And what hotel only has one fax machine. We are here on business and need business machines.
I should have stayed at the country inn and suites or holiday inn express just across the way - I would have got (a free) breakfast.
Who hires these people?

We will never stay at this hotel again and would not have stayed the night of the incident had we not already booked and paid for it through hotels.com. The lady behind the desk was unbelieveably rude and unreasonable with a family who had checked into the hotel before us. They were obviously trying to celebrate a family member's graduation, by bringing in pizza for dinner but because there were "more than two people in the room which was booked for double occupancy only" she ended up calling the police to have these people thrown out. It was ridiculous!! They were trying to explain to her that another employee at an earlier time when they booked the room had told them that this would be fine when they explained to him what they wanted to do. She was on such a power trip it was obvious and ridiculous!!
And then when I finally checked in she asked for my driver's license. I gave it to her and she made a copy of it. Later, my husband and I decided that we didn't feel comfortable with a copy of my license in their posession and even remarked on how unusual it was for that to be something that was requested on check in so when we returned to the hotel later in the evening I asked a new person behind the desk for that copy of my license. He refused to give it to me stating that it was company policy for security reasons and that I could get it back when we checked out. I asked what would have happened if I hadn't had a license and he said I wouldn't have been allowed to check-in. I told him that would have been a real issue since the room had already been paid for prior to check-in.....
After being woke up by housekeeping at 9:00 and then almost not getting the copy of my license back from the new girl behind the desk at check-out: "we require this to make sure peopel are 21 when they book the room", I decided every chance I get I'm going to let people know that this hotel is a horrible place to stay in Topeak. Too bad also, because it's clean, but the people that work there are under horrible management obviously. Believe me, I plan to contact the manager in person and I've already sent a message to candlewood.com

Response from CandlewoodSuitesMgt, Manager at Studio 6 Topeka
Responded 17 May 2011
Let me start with an apology to you. It was unfortunate that your arrival was in the middle of a situation that didn't need to include you as a bystander. That situation could have been averted with honesty from that particular guest during their check in process. What you witnessed was not the whole of the situation. This hotel has a policy in place that requires all registered guest to be 21 years old (unless you are Military personnel). Your particular reservation was prepaid and as policy the hotel absolutely requires valid identification to ensure that the room is occupied by the registered guest. There are many times when parents try to rent hotel rooms for their kids to celebrate birthdays and such; something that we do not allow. This hotel is an extended stay property and many of our guest work 6 (even 7) days a week, plus many sleep during the day and work at night. The hotel is mindful of this in what activity is allowed at the hotel. For this reason, the hotel isn't designed to accommodate for parties. There are Standards, and Fire Codes, of how many people may occupy a room at any given time. There are procedures in place to ensure the Standard is followed; confirm with proper identification that the reserving guest is the same as the registered guest. As noted, you were given back the photo copy of your identification. Once again, I do apologize to you for having to witness the situation during your check in process and I thank you for your compliments of the hotel accommodations. My hope is that you are able to look beyond this incident and give the hotel a second chance. Respectfully, S Baker, OM

I'm the Executive Director of a National Animal Rescuer organization
and travel frequently throughout the country.
I should have known I was in trouble when I tried to MAKE A RESERVATION IN ADVANCE for a non smoking room at the Candlewood Suites in Topeka, Kansas.
On the phone, I was told that there was no need to make a reservation because they "HAD PLENTY OF ROOMS."
I arrived on Monday evening, January 4, 2004 at 4:52 P.M. There was a large banner outside that said FREE HIGH SPPEED INTERNET ACCESS!
(That is what attracted me there in the first place.)
There was a line at the desk with four people ahead of me.
I sensed there was a problem when the young man behind the desk announced that this was his first night, and management had left him there alone.
After a 52 minute wait in line, I was given room # 440.
I took the elevator to the fourth floor, lugging all of my things up there, walking the halls, only to find...THERE IS NO ROOM NUMBER 440.
I came back down where the yound man was very apologetic, and told me he had just made a mistake writing the room number on my key card envelope.
My room was #420. I went back up the elevator to find a nice room! Yea! I was in!
What was that sound? The toilet was running. It probably just needed the handle jiggled, right?
After using it, I realized it WOULD NOT FLUSH AT ALL. Lovely.
Again, I called the front desk, and they told me there was no maintenance man there, there was no supervisor there, and for me to come down and they would give me another room.
I went downstairs for the THIRD time to be given room #217 and by now was losing my sense of humor about the whole thing.
I opened the door to room # 217 and heard the windows vibrating each time a truck went by the highway. I WAS RIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY SIDE. VROOOM!
I called down again and asked the guy to come up and listen to this.
He did and was amazed at how loud it was.
Then he moved me to their LAST ROOM AVAILABLE that wasn't a one bedroom suite...(remember, they were supposed to have had "plenty of rooms", and it was room #118.
Great. I am in a room. It has two beds, not one as I had requested, but I am in a room.
I needed to get to work, so I pulled out the laptop and guess what?
No high speed Internet as advertised. Not available in the rooms with two beds. Only available in studios.
I called the front desk and got a recording that the front desk was only open from such and such time to such and such time and to leave a message if this was an emergency.
I wasn't compensated any on my bill for any of these things. I told the girl at the front desk the next morning that I was going to come and write this review and asked her to let manager know.
She could have cared less. That was the crux of the problem at this hotel.
The Country Inns and Suites is near there. I have stayed there and it was nice. I have no idea what I was thinking and I won't make that mistake again.

i normally love candlewoods. however, the operations manager here is the most unprofessional, rude, and insulting woman i have ever met in my life..
she tried to triple charge me for a pet fee and then yelled at me when i kindly asked to speak with her supervisor...
Unbelievably poor service, i highly suggest you stay away

It is not the policy of this hotel to 'try' and charge a guest for pet fees. It is the policy to charge pet fees as stated in the pet policy. Extra pet fees would occur if there was excessive damage to a room caused by the guests' pet.

OMG! It is 11:57p. I've been to the desk twice to ask the manager (?) about the beeping noise. She hands me a battery and says to change the one in the smoke detector in my room. Ok. When I pull the detector off the ceiling, it appears to be hard wired to the ceiling and requires NO battery! She proceeds to argue with me about the battery despite the fact that I tell her the beeping is coming from the room next door! Is this what customer service is coming to? She's obviously too involved in her phone conversation to attend to customer requests. Maybe this isn't the right job for her.

Response from CandlewoodSuitesMgt, Manager at Studio 6 Topeka
Responded 30 Mar 2010
Larry did fail to mention that just moments before reporting his complaint that he had asked to be moved because he didn't like the room that he booked and checked into earlier that day. All suites are equipped with smoke detectors that will beep if the battery is removed or needs to be replaced. Larry was incorrect insisting that the beeping noise came from the room next to his as that room (not a guest room) has an alarm that doesn't require a battery back-up like found in guest rooms. When Larry was called to be informed of this fact it was noted and explained to him that the beeping was coming from the room he occupied. Larry seemed unwilling to accept this and indicated that he would check out of the hotel the next day; however, he did not check out but actually stayed for the duration of his reservation (4 nights). It is unfortunate that another like room wasn't available for Larry due to high occupancy. Sometimes just a little patience and willingness to work through a difficult situation proves to be beneficial for both the guest and the hotel.

After a horrible experience earlier this year, I received a phone call and email expressing concern and was provided a corrective action plan they have in place. As a Platinum Elite Member for the last 5 years I was assured this hotel had fixed all the areas I had problems with previously.
I was traveling through this area and a large venue was in-town and all hotels in this area were sold out except this one-Should of followed that as my first clue. I reluctantly pulled into this hotel and left my bags outside in my car so I could see if they had rooms still and if any changes had been made. The following events began and I was shocked and horrified by what my eyes and ears were seeing and hearing as I was trying to check in.
Hotel is very dirty
Hotel is very noisy
Hotel Staff is so rude
I was told "In no way was the clerk on-duty authorized to extending a late checkout for Priority Club members". A lecture began about their IHG affiliation and how it’s a joke, that it’s a rip-off and they preferred not to be a part of it. I heard loud and clear that they feel this affiliation does nothing but take money from the hotel without providing any support or members that have a clue, this was right before I handed my Priority Club Rewards Platinum card over.
As a Priority Club Platinum Elite Member it is very difficult to hear this as I spend a significant portion of my year with this hotel chain. I am an Ambassador member with the InterContinental hotels and they are part of the IHG brand. I have never been treated this way ever by any hotel except this one. I felt that because I am a priority club member they took their frustrations out on me as an individual.
Hotel Staff is almost to the point of abuse to their patrons as I observed this happening with an elderly couple checking in at the same time I was. I felt that had this been my grandparent or parents how upsetting this would be to see them humiliated by the staff at this hotel.
I truly did not think it could get worse after my last stay but it was obvious things can always get worse and this Candlewood property seems to being working very hard at chasing away Priority Club Members.
I ended up leaving and driving 42 miles to the next town that had a vacancy upon spending less than 1 hour at this hotel.
Never again

Responded 25 Nov 2012
Dear Guest, Thank you so much for your review of the Candlewood Suites Topeka.I do apologize if you were unhappy with the service when you arrived to the hotel however I would like to state for all those who may be reading this that we take our affiliation with IHG and the Priority Club Rewards program very seriously and I have never witnessed any of my staff express what this guest is stating they have seen. We offer free upgrades to our members when we have them available, offer gifts to all those Priority Club Members that arrive at our hotel and take our roll in providing a wonderful guest experience very seriously. As I am sure you will understand when there is a special event in town we do not always have the availablity to offer our guests a late check out due to the fact that we need time to fully ensure all rooms are cleaned by the check in time for those guests who will be checking in. I do apologize that the time frame you were traveling in seems to be one of those periods where a late check out would not have been available but I would like to ensure you that we do late check outs all the time for not only Priority Club Members but anyone that may need one. I do thank you for your review and I will look into this matter with my staff. Safe travels in the future.

I kept going back here because it was close to our office. Each time I went back, the service got a little worse. This time they completely screwed up my reservations then tried to make me feel bad about wanting to straighten them out. The blonde manager there thinks she is being cute, but she's really showing a lack of customer service. There's a brand new hotel less than a block away. Stay there! By the way, they have Cox cable, which is great but they haven't upgraded their TVs since the hotel was built. They even cheap out on what channels they provide. At least the free internet is fast.

I stayed at this Candlewood in Topeka a few weeks ago. I checked in for 3 days and left ofter the first day. The staff is not friendly and the management is horriable. I was charged for some Bowls missing from the room. I never even opened the cupboards. I checked in and was going to put my bottled water in the refrigerator and when I opened it there was some left over food and a pitcher of water in there already from the last guest. If you don't clean the rooms how do you even know whaty is missing.
The next morning I moved to another hotel. When I checked out I let the front desk no know and they did not seem to care. I was then charged for items I did not take. Who in the world takes used bowls from a hotel??? I have called this hotel and so has my office several times. I have called the priority club member service and they said they would have the hotel contact me to disscuss it. The manager is a coward. They wont return calls and everytime I do call no matter what time of day there is never a manager on duty. I have been a platnum member of Priority club for more then 10 years and prefer thsi chain of Hotel. After this I will no longer saty at any Priority club property. Who ever is the manager at Candlewood should be fired. You make charges on someone's credit card and won't even speak to them.

Even though the hotel is under new ownership, the unprofessional attitudes have remained. I will send my entire comments to the home office, but I would advised people staying in Topeka Kansas to try anything BUT the Candlewood.
