What a great value! All I needed was a clean, safe place to sleep. There is too much to do in SF to hang out in your hotel room! This place has it all! Close to Pier 39, Ghiradhelli Square, Lombard Street, & quite possible some of the best Italian food I've ever had in the ground floor of this...

Thank you Iluv2ogoaway, and so do we. The next best thing to getting away is to be around our lovely guests who are away. We're glad we were able to meet your accommodation needs while you were in San Francisco. The San Remo does have a strategic location just a block off the beaten path from all the iconic attractions...

What a perfect place to spend a few nights in the city! Conveniently located near Fisherman's Wharf, cable car line, & Buena Vista. Felt like being in a warm European home instead of a cold hotel. Definitely an A+ place!!!!!

Note: we actually went here in Oct '13 but it won't let me review that far back! Booked this guesthouse based on price and location and it was fab. As long as you understand it is a guesthouse and there is no en suit or restaurant then you'll love it. Victorian style bedrooms with shared very clean showers and toilets....

Thanks for your kind words Soton--Russ and we are happy you enjoyed our Victorian eclectic decor. We do have a restaurant though! it's right below us with a great Oak bar that came around the horn. It's got a great happy hour and jazz several times a week by the Mal Sharpe Big Money Jazz Band with frequent guest singers....

I have stayed at this hotel many times before. Can't believe I have not written a review. Tucked away on Mason Street, just three short blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, is San Francisco's best kept secret. Amazing hotel. Pristine clean rooms. Most friendly staff you'll find anywhere. The rooms are lovely, and decorated 50's glam. Feels like you've stepped back 60...

Hi Jackie K from Sacto, Don't feel too guilty about not having reviewed us, better late then never, I've never reviewed a hotel on TA either, although I guess I review the San Remo everyday and pay attention to what our lovely guests, from around the world, like you have to say. Thanks for staying with us so often, we're...

San Remo was recommended to me by my daughters boyfriend and it didnt disappoint. It was the opposite of a travelodge. The rooms were furnished and decorated with 'vintage' items, lovely brass beds in some, wooden ones in others. The communal areas were festooned with plants and the walls were covered with interesting pictures. We were there on 31st October...

Thank you SarahK from the UK for staying with us and thank your daughter's boyfriend for the recommendation! We're glad you appreciated that we keep our unoccupied room doors open for folks to view their diversity in decor. We're mostly Victorian, but some pieces are deco to waterfall 40's, no two rooms are alike. It sounds like you were in-house...

So I relocated and booked in this place at the last minute because I was disappointed by the last hostel. Warm, and antic interior decoration - vintage typed look. Great location, very close to the Fisherman's Wharf, all the best places in San Francisco etc. Lots of great breakfast places around too!

Thank you for the kind words Josephine from Perth! Glad we were able to fill in in the breach and accommodate your stay in San Francisco. We're looking for a Mini Moke maybe a Californian that you'll made down in OZ for many years, to use as a donkey for the hotel. Thinking of electrifying it into a mini screamer,...

The San Remo is a lovely old building and this adds to the interior charm - attractive decor and quaint rooms! But it won't be for everyone. The bedrooms are very small and only have a sink, with showers and toilets found at the end of the hall - only two of each so at peak cleansing times there can...

Thank you for sharing the good and the not so good, we will fix the not so good. We will look into the door slamming issue, sometimes folks aren't always aware of their surroundings and that occasional gust of wind. Now that it's the off season we will put some weatherstripping around the doors to cushion the blow and look...

From booking our room to check out, the staff here are simply the best. The employees here have superior customer service skills that are rarely seen let alone experienced anymore. We stayed at the San Remo for 2 nights. The location was fantastic. Right near fisherman's wharf and the cable car. The staff were really friendly and it felt like a safe place. Thanks for staying with us! We are a bit difficult to pigeon hole, we got thrown into the TA category with hostels and other specialty lodgings in SF. We think we are an historic hotel and built in 1906 we probably are. Our walls are lined with paintings, pictures, posters, old maps and memorabilia of our area's history. There are...

Quirky/vintage style hotel, rooms are small, you can't really swing a handbag - my partner had a issue with this, but i liked the unusual features, for example all rooms have windows out into the corridor, which sounds like it shouldn't work but it does! Thank you so much for your kind words about the San Remo, you really get us! Our rooms are on the smallish side, just as they were in 1906, We resisted the usual urge by re-modelers to gut the building, leaving only a shell of the original with an old facade and cookie-cutter accommodations within. Instead we have lovingly restored...

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
