The rooms are small but cozy. Very well located to many tourist locations including Pier 39 and Lombard street. Hopefully you aren't a light sleeper, though, since the walls are made of paper (not even cardboard). You can hear every little conversation. A "white noise" app or making use of the ear plugs provided are a must.

I had a one night stay in the penthouse and it was one of my best hotel experiences ever. Hotel is clean and the staff was very helpful and warm. Quiet street. Excellent pick if you are tired of regular hotels.

We spent 3 nights at San Remo hotel during our trip to SF. The hotel is at a great location, just 3 blocks away (7-8 minutes walk) from Fisherman's Wharf on the amazing Mason Street. The hotel is slightly small and very boutique in nature given it was constructed in early 1900s and hasn't been renovated much since. The good...

It is great to know our staff was friendly and helpful. If you need more room next time ask for our “Family Suites,” you get two adjacent rooms with a pocket...

This is not a chain hotel. In fact, San Remo might not be best described as a hotel at all. It's a 70 room hostel-like establishment that has excellent decor and a feel reminiscent of European charm. Small bedrooms, shared restrooms/shower areas, narrow hallways were all wonderfully decorated. The bed was comfortable and the room quite. The coffee/tea bar was...

Thank you for your kind review. And thanks also for mentioning the comfortable bed and free coffee and tea. Being a historic property our layout is different than many hotels, our building was erected with the purpose to host the working men that were coming to San Francisco to help rebuild the city after the 1906 earthquake. We have kept...

Great little hotel with slightly strange/old fashioned decor but very charming all the same. Staff were very helpful and lots of useful amenities such as free coffee all the time. Location is pretty good, close to the fishermans wharf attractions but also all the restaurants of little Italy.

My partner and I only spent one night at this hotel but it has a lot of charm and is in a very good location, walking distance for fisherman's wharf, chinatown, little Italy and many other cool spots. The price was decent, the staff was friendly and there are a lot of restaurants close by. It is a little noisy,...

Thank you for taking the time to write about the San Remo. We are an exceptionally-maintained historic hotel built in 1906, as such we cannot claim the same soundproofing that is common with more modern construction methods; we do offer earplugs, eye sleeping masks, robes, all to make your stay more comfortable. We are delighted that your overall trip was...

My wife and I came all the way from Memphis, TN on the California Zephyr to San Francisco CA for week long vacation. A cute quirk inn, in a good area. The rooms are small, you need to share showers, and my room didn't have a TV but who really needs one in San Francisco? I was there for 6 nights and was very comfortable. Good coffee and tea is provided in the AM.

Thank you for your great review. We do not have TV’s or phones in the rooms, but we do have great Wi-Fi, but like you said you are in SF to experience as many things you can that are unique to this wonderful city. You can watch TV at home. We strive for a serene yet affordable hotel in a...

My boyfriend and I picked this spot for the price but it was way cooler than I anticipated. Old-timey rooms and decor were cool (very turn-of-the-century grandma-chic), but clean! Made up for the shared bathrooms (which are most always a deal-breaker), but for this place not the case. There were never a ton of people around and the location was...

Thank you for your review. One of the main reasons people travel is to experience something different. Our hotel offers a “new” experience with its authentic décor style and layout. Quirky, quaint, and quotidian is to say everything positive. Except for having to walk a steep flight of stairs (there's no elevator), you come into a small lobby that has the reception desk plus an ice water cooler, makings for tea and coffee plus cookies and candies, though by 11:00 P.M. the edibles are completely removed. Along one short central...

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
