I stayed in this 'hotel' for two nights and I can confidently say that it ought to be shut down. The smell is so bad as if the whole place is a cat litter that has never been cleaned. The shower is so small and dirty, and the shower-head splashes water everywhere except on you. The bed was uncomfortable and the sheets smelly. This place got to be the worse 'hotel' in San Francisco. I think they also room junkies as I saw a completely doped guy getting on the elevator the day I checked out.

We stayed here 2 weeks ago. Great location in China Town, very helpful friendly staff and although no breakfast there was good coffee in the morning! Rooms are small but extremely clean. Definitely recommend it.

If you've every stayed in a modern hotel, you will be shocked when you first go into your room. The rooms are just big enough to hold a 'full' size bed. And that bed... A six-foot tall person will sleep with his heels 6 inches beyond the bottom of the bed. I suppose they couldn't put in a longer bed, because a longer bed would block the bathroom door from opening. And the beds are ROCK HARD. I did not sleep well. On the positive side: The hotel walls are at least reasonably painted, and not too dark. The bathroom is VERY small, but it has new-ish tile and the shower wasn't too bad. I was told that rooms on the second floor are a little larger, but the beds are the same size. The hotel 'lobby' is very small, but that doesn't bother me. You would think that you could get better than this for the money it costs. Apparently San Francisco is just so expensive that even very bad quality is expensive.

Let me preface this by saying that I travel to SFO for work on a regular basis, and have stayed in plenty of the boutique hotels in this area. This is the first time I've been motivated to write a review. On the plus side, the hotel is just up the block from the Dragon Gate, and is close to market St. Their lobby is nice. Upon opening the door to my hotel room, I noted that the door almost hit the bed. My first words were "what the..." as I could not see a bathroom, and was filled with dread at the idea of a communal bathroom. But my worries were allayed when I realized that I couldn't see the bathroom, as it was behind the door I'd opened. The room, such as it was, was barely bigger than the full size bed. 3 feet of clearance between bed and door, and about 2 feet at the front and far side. As its SFO, I didn't expect a big room, but this was basically a walk in closet with an attached bathroom. The bathroom actually felt bigger. Now, bear in mind, I stayed here for 6 nights. The first night wasn't too bad, I was dead tired from traveling. Over the next 5 nights, I discovered how bad a hotel can be. The mattress was about as soft as 2x4's. To the point that sleeping on it was physically causing me pain. I ended up sleeping on the floor some, and also piled my pillows into the bathtub, and slept there too, trying to avoid the bed. I even went so far as to consider running to target to purchase a 2 inch memory foam topper, to try and make the bed reasonable. I skipped it and stuck with the tub. Over the course of my stay, I also discovered how uncomfortable a room with zero air movement can be. Sure, no problem, no AC. I get it. but a ceiling fan would have been nice. Anything to shake out the air in the room. It was this lack of airflow that led me to open the window, which I maybe shouldn't have. Over the weekend, late at night, I was lulled to sleep (in the bathtub), by the sound of hookers moaning in other rooms. And when you say to yourself, "It couldn't be that bad..." I was able to hold my phone up to the bathroom window and translate some of the things they were saying in Chinese, with google translate. It was a definite moment. So, to summarize, the lobby is nice. The staff is very friendly, and the hotel is in a great location. The bed was atrocious, and the hookers outside were hilarious. The bathroom water pressure was actually quite good, and the pillows were fluffy. Overall, given my experience, I wont be staying at the grant plaza again. It took 2 hours of deep tissue massage to work out the wreck that was my back after sleeping here for 6 nights.

Please accept our apologies for the room size that you found unsatisfactory. The Grant Plaza Hotel is a historical building with a long and colorful history. Unfortunately, due to the age of the building, the configuration can not be changed or modified. In the future, please inform the front desk to change another room for your stay and we also provide the mattress pad for the bed if you feel the mattress is too hard. We depend on comments like yours from our guests to try and improve our hotel. Thanks for your review. Best Regards,
