Most of the reviews already written give sound advice about the location and facilities for this hotel. It is well located to reach the trams and shops at Union Square, which is easily reached on foot. Even when we returned to the hotel at night we never felt threatened, although there were certainly homeless people around and undoubtedly some nightime activity!! Our...

I read the other reviews and was concerned about staying in a place where there might be a considerable and aggressive homeless population, but after staying here there weren't more than I'm used to as a New Yorker. We stayed 5 days and encountered 0 incidents. It was a great location and we were able to walk or take the...

I am here at the moment... In general it is nice, but... there's one big an important point. If you do not mind to hear EVERYTHING what is going on around, all conversations and all screams around your room - choose it. It is not expensive. If you want CALM and relax during your vacation - pay a little bit...

Hotel Carlton was a great hotel to stay in, especially having come off three weeks of staying in hostels! The room was serviced each day and the beds were super comfy! Free wireless connected no worries and lots of TV channels. Area to the left of hotel can be dodgy but to the right leads you to Powell Street (15-20min...

Hotel was clean, the staff friendly, the wine reception a nice touch, nice location and interesting decor. Hotel had an unpleasant smell of malodorous bathroom sanitation, but after a while you got used to it. We could hear every single word from the guests in the neighboring room. However with earplugs, we got a good night sleep. For the price...

People could see into our room from the street so we kept the window closed. Close to our favorite restaurants in San Francisco so that was nice. Free Parking and Wifi as well. But would look into the joie de vivre hotel is japantown it's much nicer for the price.

We stayed here for several nights while we did the tourist thing in SF. A very good location as close to good restaurants, shopping and the popular tourist things. Staff were helpful and friendly. Room was reasonable - a decent size and clean; bed comfy! Our only complaint is that the walls seemed to be on the thin side, meaning...

Think Cockroach Motel meets International Youth Hostel. Disgusting room--remove the attractive bedspread and 2 designer pillows and you'll see it for what it is--an old run-down hotel with dirty old carpet, a trailer park television and a street-view of hooker central near the entrance to the hotel. I can't believe Joie de Vivre would put their name on this! The...

Dependably fresh, clean, nicely done-up rooms. We always ask for an upper floor at the back--very quiet. Love the staff--fun, friendly, helpful. A nice international mix of guests. Can't beat the location and the value.
