This is a Chinese hotel, the Sam Wong Hotel, and there is a lot of interesting material on display in the breakfast area about Sam Wong's history and his family. The SW is right on the edge of Chinatown next to the Italian neighbourhood so great for both cuisines. It is run with quiet efficiency which is more than we...

Great location on the edge of Chinatown and Little Italy. After our flight, we took the Bart to Union Square, and got on a cable car that brought us pretty close to the hotel. There are a couple of bus lines which run even closer. Every morning we were up and out early with all the Chinese school children riding...

We chose this one based on location and price. Yes, the rooms are small but we weren't in them very much! Located right between China Town and Little Italy so great for walking, eating out. We walked easily to and from Fisherman's Wharf, walked down to catch the cable cars into the city. Walked to the Coit tower. The room...

How small are the rooms? If you sit on the toilet, you have to sit diagonally or bang your knee into the toilet paper holder. The room was clean, but a little musty. The queen bed filled most of the room. An armoire has a TV, but the room refrigerator was unplugged or not working. Rooms on the street side...

We stayed at the SW for 6 nights. The hotel is very simple but very clean and in a great location. We walked everywhere and never took a bus or taxi. Breakfast is basic but they tell you that. Lots of restaurants in the area. Would stay there again.

On the edge of Chinatown and North Beach the SW hotel is nearby to great restaurants, bars, as well as tourist attractions. It is also close to a BART station if you are planning using it to reach the airport. My husband and I enjoy exploring a city by walking and the location permits this, once you get used to...

My husband and I have stayed at the SW for quite a few years, and I returned as a widow recently. It is clean, well maintained, and the staff are helpful, except for one person on my last visit, who seemed brain dead. The best thing is the location, where North Beach (Italian) and Chinatown come together. Breakfast dumplings and/or...

It's all good at this hotel. The location is between the Italian and Chinese areas, also close to Fisherman's Wharf (easy to walk to FW, but getting back is all up hill, so taxi is best). It's a clean hotel offering a simple but effective continental breakfast. The immediate area has a few strip clubs, but I didn't get the...

Stayed at the SW in September. Friendly staff, very clean room and totally quiet from the busy street we were on. We didn't have the continental breakfast that comes with the stay but quite happy with the choice.

Staying in Chinatown

Neighbourhood Profile
Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighbourhood decorated with colourful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighbourhood.
