Detailed Reviews
We had an excellent three night stay at the Wyndham Canterbury. The location is outstanding within walking distance to many places, restaurants, shopping and Union Square. Our room was new, very well appointment, comfortable, and can easily accommodate four guests with their sofa bed. It had a small kitchen and plentiful space for storage. Although this is advertised as a hotel it’s more of a timeshare, and they do try to push the idea of becoming a member which we declined. They do not service the rooms daily which is consistent with more of an Airbnb or timeshare type of stay. If you’re comfortable with that setting, this is an outstanding place to stay.

We absolutely loved it here and the price was very reasonable. $149/night for a 1 bedroom with a sofa bed in the living room booked through the Wyndham website. The sofa bed mattress was not very comfortable, but other than that we were comfortable. There was a TV and DVD player in the living room and a TV in the bedroom. The property had a game room and media room with DVDs available to borrow. They gave out an extra microwave popcorn with the movie.
If you had more luggage than you could carry, the desk or door people would push your luggage. You were not allowed to use the luggage carts without them. So, tips were necessary.
Housekeeping was not available. The hotel engineers were fast – they were at your door before you could hang up the phone if you called about anything.
The kitchen area had a table and chairs, dishes, glasses, mugs, utensils, dishwasher, microwave, mini-fridge, toaster, blender, and a full-size coffee machine which malfunctioned on the last day. There was no stove top or oven. There was Lavazza brand coffee packets and microwave popcorn in the room.
They offered us a $100 Amex gift card to attend a presentation which we took advantage of. They gave us the gift card before the presentation. That was a first! They offered coffee and some sugary snacks during the presentation. For us it lasted about 50 minutes. We made it clear from the beginning that we were not going to buy and we didn’t.
We arrived on a Saturday night and were able to find street parking that was free until 10am Monday morning. On Monday morning we wasted time driving around trying to find free parking and ended up paying $35 per day for parking at the Butterick garage next door to the Wyndham.
We walked everywhere from here. Mission and Castro district one day and Fisherman’s Wharf and Chinatown the next. We bought some of the duck and ribs that hung in the windows of the shops along Stockton Street in Chinatown back to the room for dinner to take advantage of the kitchen. We grabbed Mission burritos while in that district (similar concept to Chipotle but very different taste imo). While walking towards the Mission District, we walked past several homeless encampments. One person seemed to be following us and yelling at us, but once we go out of his way, he continued yelling. So, it was some sort of mental illness.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights, and loved our stay! Our room was clean, and smartly laid out. We absolutley loved Dino who worked in the lobby and was very pleasant to chat with everyday! We found a different coffee shop every morning in walking distance and took advantage of the very clean laundry room and game room. Beautiful stay!

The suite was large and clean. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel is convenient to Union Center, Chinatown, live theatres, BART, and cable cars. There are some very nice restaurants in the area. Free laundry is available on odd numbered floors.

Recently stayed in an one bedroom suite. Staff was cordial and the room was clean. The size of the room was spacious and we appreciated having a washer and dryer down in the hallway. There was only two elevators however we never really had to wait long for an elevator. The area southwest of the hotel aka “tenderloin” could be sketchy at night, so I would avoid that area. Otherwise hotel located central to Union Square, main touristy area. Would recommend the hotel for future stays.

Yes, the hotel is in the middle between Lower Nob Hill and the infamous Tenderloin District. Just stay on the north side of Sutter Street and walk up Powell Street from Market Street and you will be OK. But the Club Wyndham Canterbury has the most friendly and helpful staff. The welcome was very warm and even though you are asked to go to a timeshare presentation, this property is not that pushy as others. Every staff member greets you and are very helpful. The doorman opens the door for you and welcomes you every time. The Concierge has a list of great restaurants and some local establishments give discounts when you show the hotel key card. The hotel is very tastefully decorated. The property has some really nice suites with nice furnishings and are very spacious. However, we would have preferred a king bed instead of a queen bed in the bedroom, but it was comfortable. The kitchen is nicely equipped but does not have a stove. The bath was spacious and very nice. Free laundry facilities are available in the hotel which is very nice. Not the Fairmont, but a very good place to stay.

This was a great hotel. Stayed here for 2 nights for work and it was way better than I expected. We stayed in a one bedroom and didn't expect it to be a suite. Separate bedroom, livingroom, bathroom, kitchen w/ sink, refrigerator, microwave, utensils, drinkware, etc. Nice lobby. Price was great for SF. I liked that you had to use your room key to get in the hotel 24/7 especially since one hotel I looked into didn't even have anyone at their front desk and you had to walk to their sister property one block up to check in!
Although there isn't a hotel onsite, few restaurants within walking distance and you can be on Market Street within 20 mins. Would definitely stay here again!

I’m a Wyndham VIP member and we chose this location for our eight night stay. The Wyndham Canterbury is a nice hotel in a good location. We found the staff to be very welcoming and helpful, especially the doorman Dino. The reason I only gave it three stars, is because of the horrible Internet service. We were very upset about the WiFi, or lack there of. They offer basic for free and high speed for a price. We are timeshare owners and we should not have to pay extra for WiFi being that we get killed with maintenance fees. The wifi should be high-quality for all. . We called the front desk, because we couldn’t connect at all and were given a number to call, but nobody ever answered. We spent our entire stay without WiFi. We had to wait until we went out to actually book activities or check our emails. We also had a very frustrated teenager that could not connect to the Internet. I’ve never experienced that at any other Wyndham location.

This is an exceptional property and a great value. It is a Wyndham timeshare property, so be aware of this before you arrive, as you will get some polite pressure to attend a presentation when you arrive. I declined, as I knew I was not in the market for a timeshare. After resolving the timeshare issue, the rest of the stay was very pleasant. The units are spacious, clean and well appointed, with comfy beds, sofa, kitchenette, and bathroom. The lobby has an old hotel feel; the rooms are a little more modern with standard furnishings, nothing trendy. There is a spotless workout room with lots of functioning equipment, a game room with pool and foosball, and coffee and water are served in the lobby at various times of the day. The rooms have full sized coffee makers with a decent Lavazza medium roast cofee provided. The area is pretty safe, and there is a reasonably priced Chinese restaurant as well as a burger place on Bush St., which is the next block. There are many more expensive dining options close by as well. In addition, there are several good markets on Bush St. Lastly, the service was cordial and professional. When I had a minor housekeeping issue, they sent someone right up to assist. The bell staff was great too...they held my bags for about an hour after I checked out the last day. The front desk answered my questions and gave me extra supplies I requested. I would love to stay here again the next time I am in San Francisco.

The Canterbury has a hotel they recommend. I believe it is $50-60 per night, which is typical for SF.
Yes -- recognizing that it is a big city, and so a certain amount of alertness and caution is always appropriate. Canterbury is in a mixed commercial/residential area, so at night the streets are pretty empty. But my radar never went off once (and I lived and worked in NYC for years, so my radar is pretty fine tuned). as others said, there is an incredible amount of homeless in San Fran (and actually all the California cities from what we saw), and lots of them would lay in the doorways of the closed businesses on Suter at night, but on whole they were there to sleep, not bother people. Would once in while get a pan-handler, but only one that i found annoyingly pushy.
