The Tradewinds Hotel is the nicest hotel on the island of American Samoa. If we were to translate that into a hotel on the mainland, it would be a mid-grade Best Western. The lobby and pool area were lovely, and the fresh flowers were a nice touch. There are also some things that bear improvement: -The rooms are very tired and dated. The bathrooms need remodeling - get the grime and mold out of the grout, redo the bathtubs, have adequate water pressure. The bed was so soft, that we just sank into it and had no support. Very difficult to sleep. And also the room was so musty smelling, that us and all of our clothes just smelled like mold at the end of our stay. I'm still trying to get the smell out of my hair. -We killed 2 cockroaches during our stay -There is music constantly playing in the hallways. Yes, at 3am you can still hear it. -The fitness center equipment was falling apart, and the room was so moldy smelling that you couldn't exercise there -The Equator restaurant had similar food quality to the rest of the island. That is, highly processed, ultra-high salt content, smothered in gravy, etc. All we wanted after that was to detox on vegetables. -We had a massage at the spa and it was probably the most unusual massage we've ever had. The room had no ventilation, for starters. There were 4 women crammed in that room for 12hrs/day with horrific nail polish fumes. I don't know how they didn't pass out. The massage is in the adjacent room with an open door. The weird part about the massage is, they washed our hair as part of it.... THREE TIMES. The girl scrubbed my scalp raw with her nails each time, and it was so painful. Completely bizarre. Ok, now that that's out of the way, let's talk about the island itself, since it was so hard to find info about this beforehand. -Be prepared to not swim in the ocean the entire time. There is one public beach on the whole island, and I can tell you that you will not want to swim there. For every other beach, you need to ask permission from the landowner to park there and go to the beach. As in, you need to approach one of the shacks where the locals live in squalor, hope to not get attacked by one of the thousands of aggressive, stray dogs on the island, and hope the person is home and will speak to you. I'm not joking. -You also need to ask permission to take pictures on the island. Same deal as above. Wth? -There is zero concept of hospitality or customer service on this island. They do not cater to tourists, they do not like tourists. If you ask "can we do...xyz?" the answer is usually "we don't do that here." There is no concept of how to accommodate a guest's request - even if they're paying. Be prepared for everyone to be as unhelpful as possible. -Want to try to visit the Manu'a Islands? Sorry, good luck getting them to sell you a ticket unless you're a local. -Much of the islanders live in complete squalor. They do not take care of the island at all, and there is abundant trash around the beaches and towns. The main town area is highly industrial and it makes you so sad to see what could have been a beautiful island reduced to what looks like a third world country. -The food quality is abysmal. There is such little selection of fresh vegetables that we truly didn't know what to eat. Everything is fried and processed. I've never encountered such unhealthy food before. -Did I mention the thousands of aggressive, stray dogs? Please get your rabies shot before you go. It's one less thing to worry about if you get bitten - especially since there appears to be no real medical care on the island. -We couldn't find any tour guides to do excursions. The front desk at our hotel was really unhelpful and gave us the name of just one person who might be willing to take us. We called him multiple times and he seemed really disinterested in taking us on any tours. Bizarre. If you are coming to American Samoa to visit the National Park, here is my advice: -Fly in on the Thursday flight where you arrive late in the evening. Stay at the Tradewinds Hotel and rent a car -Friday, visit the National Park visitor center to get your stamp, drive around the far east side of the island where you can get some beautiful pictures -Saturday, do the long hike up the ridge of the mountain to the top, for a stellar view from the top of the island -Saturday, drive around the far west side of the island for some pictures. If you're extremely lucky, maybe you can find someone who will give you a boat tour around the island so you can see the impressive green cliffs from all sides. But I wouldn't count on it. -Monday, chill at the pool and get out of dodge on the 11.20pm flight to HNL. You might think 4 days is way too short of a trip for flying halfway across the world. But I can tell you, after 1 day we were dying to go home and tried everything possible to get an earlier flight (we couldn't). A week on an island where you can't go in the water, can't eat the horrible food, and have little else to do.....does not feel like a vacation, it feels like a prison sentence. Instead, spend the extra days literally anywhere else before going home.

Not many options for lodging on the island and Tradewinds is your best option. Good location near airport and staff is outstanding. Rooms are adequate and recommend you get a Suite for more room. Found mattresses were overdue to be replaced. Get room service everyday. Restaurant is good albeit portions are large. Free continental breakfast is limited. You can order breakfast off the menu and food was good. Nice pool although had only 3 loungers .

1 star is not low enough for this restaurant! We had a very unfortunate experience. The service was extremely bad! There were only 4 tables of customers with 2 servers on duty, yet it took forever to get simple beverages like coffee and water. The food was so salty we had to return it and ask for it to be removed from our ticket. There were 4 of us adults in our party and our meals all arrived at different times, at least 10-12 minutes apart!

We flew to Pago Pago to visit the National Park. There are only a handful of hotels to choose from. We selected Tradewinds Hotel and were very happy with our choice. There are only 2 flights per week from Honolulu and so we knew we would want amenities at our hotel. The restaurant serves free continental breakfast to in-house guests. It is adequate, but nothing special. They do have a menu you can also order from. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there over our visit. The food is excellent! There is also a fitness room and an outdoor pool. A gift shop is available for supplies and souvenirs. The staff was very courteous and professional. The room was very clean as was the hotel. We planned to rent a car at the hotel, but none were available. We hired a taxi to tour the island and visit the National Park. We were charged $20 per hour and he (Tommy) was very helpful and knowledgeable. This hotel is about 20 minutes from the actual town of Pago Pago. So, you can't really walk to shops etc. However, the town of Pago Pago doesn't have a lot going on either. But the location may be a deciding factor for some. However, we are glad we stayed there and unless you want to be by the beach, I can highly recommend Tradewinds.

First of all, there are not a lot of options on the island and this was one of the better choices. Starting with the positives - the staff were super friendly and helpful and overall great to deal with. The hotel is pretty basic and the rooms are a decent size, though a bit dated and dark. We only ate breakfast at the restaurant - they had a very minimal "continental" that was included in the rate - so one day we did order breakfast off the menu and it was pretty greasy - we decided to eat at A&E down the street after that. The pool area was nice, though it was closed for a rather rowdy wedding for 2 days of our stay. The walls are pretty thin but thankfully I brought ear plugs! The cafe did have really nice pies, however, and worth a try! Location is pretty close to the airport and they do offer a free shuttle in case you don't have a car (though expensive, would recommend it if you are going to do any exploring!). The internet was quite spendy ($15/day), but US phones don't have any agreement with the Samoan companies so using your own device is even worse.

We ate at the Equator Restaurant, and tried their sliders, a club sandwich, and the soup of the day. The chicken was inedible: full of gristle; the fries and soup were just OK. The white rice was also OK. Service was friendly. We sat in what is almost a room without light, until we opened the curtains. There is a small snack bar down the hall from the Equator, with a few sad-looking pastries and sandwiches.

Very comfortable accommodation. The Deluxe Suite has very comfortable king size bed. Only downside is having to pay for internet- I’m just spoiled by other hotels providing complimentary WiFi to guests.

Stayed here for 3 nights for a business trip. This hotel was recommended by a colleague who stays here quite often. It is close to the airport but in an odd location so I would highly suggest printing off directions before arriving as most cell phones don’t get service. The hotel itself has nice landscaping and seems fairly updated compared to many local buildings. There seems to be someone on security duty in the lobby at most times so I felt safe parking my rental car there as well as feeling safe as a solo traveler in my room. The room was a standard king and was adequate and clean. The air worked well and the room had a small fridge but no microwave. The bed was fairly comfy but the other furnishings such as the sofa seemed a bit worn. There was also a good amount of chipped paint and wood in the sink and bathroom areas. Upon entering the room I noticed a mildewy smell, which I suppose is common in such humid areas. I only ate the free breakfast one day - it consisted of some fruit spread out on a platter and assorted breads to toast and use either butter or peanut butter as the spread. You can, of course, order a regular breakfast from the menu for regular prices. I did eat one dinner at the restaurant and it was pretty good. I would recommend eating at the Koko Bean Cafe in the shopping center a few miles away that has the Carl’s Jr. or the Paradise Pizza in the same area. If you are taking the late night flight out I recommend doing the 1/2 day check out option, check out at 6 pm and hitting a 7 pm movie at the local theater. If you rent your car from Avis at the airport you will pick it up and drop it off at a car dealership located on the way back to the airport from the theater so you can just drop it off and catch a ride back that will get you back to the airport in time for that flight. Overall, if you are doing business in that part of the island I would recommend staying here but if your business is closer to the downtown area you might try Sadie’s by the Sea.
