I'll admit the staff were very pleasant and tried to make the stay welcoming. Even the manager I spoke with was pleasant but was only able to offer so much. The resort is very calming to walk around, and there are many pools and swimming activities - even swimming with dolphins!
Overall, with the pleasant staff and large resort, the resort and rooms are outdated and need maintenance and improvement. Even the waterway for the boats needed to be cleaned due to algae being present in the waterway.
- we stayed for the week between Christmas and New Years for less than $1,000 because of the HGV promotion
- The resort is in a lovely location and the views are some of the best in Hawaii
- Valet was always prompt and worth the extra few bucks to avoid having to hike to the self parking lot
Cons:
- the room and the bed might be original to when this hotel was built
- It is dated and a sad experience for a company that is trying to get people to invest in a timeshare. To put people into an old and dated room with an abhorrently uncomfortable bed for 5 nights, show them the remodeled units but not let them stay in them, and then expect them to buy is beyond a laughable business model.
The reviews on here are all accurate and this is another warning to anyone who might be thinking about doing the same as we did. Spend a little more money and stay elsewhere. It’s not worth the savings to have back pain every morning because the bed is older than you are. Very little the hotel could do given time of year, so just a bad experience from the room perspective. I had buyer’s remorse from the moment I booked and then read the reviews.
The walk from Ocean Tower to the main lobby is a half mile and the slow moving tram ran regularly and was only slightly faster than walking (but good if you caught it and had bags to carry). We did not frequent any of the restaurants besides the coffee shop (which was good but always running out of items). Breakfast buffet was $50 a person for an omelette station and make your own waffles. Italian restaurant was busy at night but we always ventured into the small villages for food. Eat where the locals do, it will save you a ton of money.
We won’t return to this property again, but the island is absolutely worth the visit.
The positives—the property is gorgeous. The sunsets even just outside our room were amazing. We enjoyed the larger pool. (The smaller one outside our room seemed very crowded.) The lagoon is really neat—we never swam in it, but we enjoyed spotting pretty fish and sea turtles from the bridges, etc. The dolphins were fascinating—we spent quite a bit of time watching them whenever we passed by. Even if you’re not staying here, it would be worthwhile to walk through the property to watch the dolphins. They seemed so eager to interact with their caretakers and trainers. (It reminded us of our yellow lab at home!) Parking is $48/day, so if you wanted to visit, I’d recommend parking elsewhere (like the Kings or Queens Marketplace) and walking from there. It’s not a bad walk, and there are great sidewalks on both sides of the road.
It's not all bad, but there are nicer options in the area.

Our room was fine. Comfortable bed, ocean view, mini fridge. All that we needed.
Again anyone that complains needs to take a chill pill and enjoy this amazing property. It’s not cheap, but that’s what you pay for. Splurge, it’s worth it!

The resort is absolutely gorgeous, with breathtaking views, plenty of restaurants, shops, and activities on-site, and the newly renovated room we stayed in was incredibly modern and luxurious. Our trip was 5 nights and we could have easily spent every single day at the resort and never ran out of things to do. If you want a relaxing resort-style vacation, this is an excellent choice.
That said… if you’re looking for a more “adventurous” type of vacation, this might not be the property for you. Ocean Tower is located at the far end of the resort, so when you check in it’s about a 10-15 minute walk from the main lobby to actually get to the property. The boat shuttles were not running and one of the trams was out of service during our stay, meaning the entire property was only serviced by one tram which could take almost 20 minutes to arrive if you just missed it. Parking is also pricey - $48/day for self-park, or $55/day for valet. So if your itinerary involves lots of exploring out and about on the island, just getting in and out of the resort can be a bit of an ordeal. And since you’re basically stuck on the resort, of course all the food options are going to be very expensive, even by Hawaii standards. I was also a bit disappointed that for a 5-night stay, we only got one housekeeping visit, though fresh towels were delivered upon request.
All that to say, if your vacation plan is to spend the whole time relaxing at a resort, by all means, Ocean Tower is hard to beat. Otherwise, it might be worth finding somewhere else to stay.

The layout of the building is unusual but you will catch on. The pools are very nice. The grounds are beautiful and well kept - we loved sitting in lounge chairs along the coast in the morning and evening to just watch and listen to the ocean. As for the resort in general - there is a lot of walking and the tram is slow. Relax and slow down - you are on vacation. I did wish there were more food options. I got some groceries and made light meals in our room a few days. For more than one person, it might be cheaper to take an uber to the kings shops or queen’s marketplace since the resort shuttle is $5 each. I didn’t rent a car this time since parking is expensive. I could have rented a car for a day if I wanted and worked around the parking cost.
Overall - we had a great vacation relaxing in a beautiful setting. We would absolutely return. I wish I had kept notes about the names of staff. We had no bad experiences and there were a few I wish I could compliment.
Ocean tower is located at the far end of the resort from the main lobby, so you have to drag your luggage through the resort grounds to get to to rooms. There is an available tram service but it runs so slowly it easily takes twice as long as walking. There are also boats that are suppose to travel through an on site canal, but I never saw more than one boat running.
Food and drink pricing is outrageous with $12 beers, $5 soft drinks, and $24-32 burgers and pizzas. Real restaurant food is higher.
Location is beautiful, but the isolation makes you a captive guest unless you have a car rental. Current self parking for that car will cost you $48 per night.
We enjoyed the resort amenities but i don't think we would ever come back due to the extravagant pricing.
If you go to eat at the local eateries, expect to spend $250-300 for a family of 4, for a real sit-down restaurant experience
I think the isolation and inconvenience of this place is a real turn off and I don’t think my family will want to stay here again, unfortunately. On the plus side the staff has been very friendly, helpful and attentive.
