Kalani Honua is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit educational retreat center and residential community located in the jungle of Puna on east Hawaii Island. Kalani Honua means ‘harmony of heaven and earth,’ and our mission is to facilitate new ways of being in the world by living simply, learning joyfully, experiencing community and honoring the land. Our remote location along the Puna Coast of East Hawaii is ideal for disconnecting from the cacophony of modern life and living in harmony with nature. Kalani hosts visitors for individual or group retreats. Our 127-acre campus includes guest lodging for every budget (from shared, dormitory style rooms to freestanding cottages), a pool, guest massage studio, a restaurant, and activity/yoga studios. Our simple, rustic accommodations are nestled among native flora with views of tropical jungle or pastoral vistas, and visitors may encounter geckos, mongoose, spiders, cats - even feral pigs - as they experience our campus.

Having read the reviews and heard good things we thought we'd try out Kalani for dinner. At nearly $30 each for dinner we had expected more than canteen food on paper plates.. The plastic furniture and free roaming pigs and cats just added to the...More

Aloha and mahalo for your review! We are terribly sorry we were unable to meet your expectations of our Dining Lanai. Although it is extremely uncommon, our jungle location makes us vulnerable to equipment and power outages that affect our ability to run "as usual"....More

I've been to Kalani four times and love it, but it works best for those who go there to meditate, do yoga or go within. Regular tourists might not fit in, especially not the prudes who believe that people should wear a bathing suit when...More

We booked for a week but left after a day - (no refund). The place is run down and unhygienic, seems to be full of escapees from the mainland having a party and expecting paying guests to subsidise their lifestyle... The spa is none existent...More

We host group retreats and individual travelers for experiences in yoga, meditation, massage, arts, and much more. Given the breadth of experiences we offer here, the people...More

I got back a week ago and my experience was vastly different than my initial one 2 years ago. In 2014 I signed up for a yoga retreat and went to Kalani for some serious R&R. I was burned out on my job and relationship...More

Aloha Kellismom and mahalo for your review. We are in the process of updating our website with language and imagery to make it more clear how remote and rustic some of our accommodations are -- and, we're happy you were able to optimize your second...More

Aloha Catherine, Our tropical lofts and a few of our cottages are among the newest rooms on campus. When you book your reservation, specify that you are looking for one of our newer buildings, rather than the more rustic... More

Aloha - most of the major car rental companies have counters at Hilo Airport, and some in Hilo town itself. We are able to provide you with a shuttle back to the airport so you can pick up your rental car. Mahalo!
