We often recommend our brides and grooms places to stay. Last nights couple arrived at your venue to no one. A key and a map were all that greeted them. They had to lug all their luggage up your stairs. Where is the night porter? The personal touch? No customer service what so ever! Ppl I told couldn’t believe it. Way to go to ruin a couples wedding night and you’re not cheap.

Definitely NOT a 5 star hotel. GOOD Beautiful building with the essence of times gone by. Lovely gardens and surrounding area Room was spacious and had everything you needed. My sister and I stayed in the Kaye Suite with a lovely balcony The night reception young guy was fabulous and showed us around inside. Sounds wonderful doesn't it? Read on.... BAD This is not a 5 star hotel! Reception feedback: Dreadful customer service from the reception lady. The first thing she said to me was that their new booking system did not charge my credit card and I had to pay there and then. No welcome speech, welcome to The Chateau, hope you had a good trip, nothing, except I had to pay! Also no directions to breakfast area or Eleanor's restaurant - nothing! Or even mention of our 7.30pm restaurant booking (not stayed here before so thought perhaps restaurant not part of hotel as she didnt mention anything). I was then given a room key and a map to our room (but had to return the map). There are a lot of rooms and corridors and apparently stairs (no mention of stairs when I booked and my sister finds it hard to walk up stairs but she managed - she had to as there was no alternative). If we wanted help with our luggage there is a luggage lift but to just let her know so we can get assistance. What! No assistance now but possibly later. After walking through the blue room, red room, green room, down several corridors, we came to 2 sets of very steep stairs! We were told first door on the right at top of stairs which corresponds with the map. But, that door didn't open and after several attempts tried the next room which opened. I think the first one was a cupboard! I don't remember the receptionist mentioning our room was labelled 'Kaye' Suite on the door. That would have helped! We were happy to have a balcony looking over the gardens (garden needs attention), but it was so filthy from leaves, dust and bird poop that our happiness was wilted. The kettle was a challenge to plug in as it only had a short cord and the powerpoint was at floor level. Took us awhile to work out the individual lamps and how to turn them off. You can't, as there is only one 'main' switch that turns everything on and off. So it's either all lights on or all lights off! Restaurant feedback: On-line booking confirmed for 7.30pm. Received a phone call from the restaurant at 7.05pm. Where are you, your booking was for 7pm. Sorry no my booking was for 7.30pm! No, we only do on the hour bookings! Ok sorry but I have a booking confirmation that confirms 7.30pm. Rudely he reiterated again they only do on the hour bookings. So we hurried down the stairs, well very slowly so we didnt break our necks on the hour! Tried to work out where the restaurant was and finally found it, it was the dining room blue, green or red room not sure which as I had to give the map back! I showed the head waiter the booking confirmation and he just made some sort of defensive remark. No apology given, again regarding their dodgy booking system. We ordered the 3 course meal which was $125pp. My sisters meals were nice but nothing to write home about. My main meal was pork and it was not cooked enough - when your knife doesn't cut through your meat there is something wrong. I didn't eat it as I didn't want worms (google undercooked pork). I mentioned to the head waiter that we didn't think the pork was cooked enough but again was given a defensive remark and that it was cooked correctly. By the time we sat down at the table and they had returned to take our order, it was after 7.30pm so we shouldn't have rushed for the on-hour start! Each course was delivered, eaten and replaced with the next course with record speed. We were out of there by 8.45pm. You know why we were sped through. The same restaurant staff were working the breakfast roster. No wonder they wanted us gone so they could go home and have a rest before the next shift. The Chateau at Yering is sadly very tired along with the staff. Very much understaffed. We were told new owners had taken over the hotel back in May 2023. Well they need more staff and better training and then perhaps your current staff might feel more appreciated and will be happier when they greet their guests. Such a beautiful place to stay but 'essence' of the by gone era just isn't enough. I always read the reviews before I commit to a venue. The hotel reviews on their website are 5* and wonderful only. Dig a bit deeper on other review platforms and the ratings are very poor indeed. The new owners have an opportunity to turn this venture into a proper 5 star rating but of course you have to invest more time and money from the top so the real workers feel valued and happier. I will only return when I read better reviews.

Great location but looks a lot better online than in reality. Lives on an image it can’t deliver. Has an antique old colonial look and interior which works reasonably well but poorly serviced by staff that are sparse and less than committed. Restaurant only open 3 days a week, Wi-Fi didn’t work in rooms. Focussed on weddings and functions rather than normal paying guests. Portrays an image of penny pinching and cost control, not what you would expect from the price or image. Some front of house staff definitely not customer facing. The outdoor pool is green, filthy and unkempt as are the tennis court.

Serious safety incident
We booked to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary, it was the first time away from our children for nearly six years, but sadly the night will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Our visit began pleasant enough, my wife and I checked into the hotel on Saturday afternoon, and after a leisurely stroll around the gardens and adjoining winery, we retreated to our room to prepare for our dinner reservation in Elenore’s Restaurant. My wife went to shower, dried herself and put on a robe before attempting to dry her hair using the hotel provided hair dryer. Upon turning the hair dryer on, it exploded and caught fire, in a split second she used a towel to extinguish the fire but was left with flash burns to her arm and a serious burn to her wrist. On hearing the commotion, I rushed towards the bathroom to find my wife holding her arm and in shock. On realising the seriousness of the burn we immediately began to cool the burn under cool running water. After a number of minutes I moved her back into the main room at which time she burst out crying and was experiencing significant pain due to the burn, I went to seek help from the hotel staff at reception. I informed the reception staff member on duty that my wife had received a serious electrical burn from the hairdryer in the room and asked for assistance. The lady behind the counter led me to the freezer in the breakfast restaurant and provided one Anko (K-mart) branded small ice gel pack and an additional ice block. Despite the breakfast restaurant being a short distance from our room, the reception staff member made no effort to attend our room, nor did she offer to call for medical assistance. Shortly after obtaining the ice packs, I returned to reception to obtain a bandage to dress the wound. The same lady opened the first aid kit and said “take whatever you need”. Again, and despite me showing a photograph of the injury to the reception staff member, no offer was made to call an ambulance or doctor. I returned to our room with the bandages to attend to my wife’s injuries. After dressing the wound we attended dinner, in hindsight I am not quite sure how we actually got to dinner, my wife was certainly in shock, I think I was too. On returning to our room at approximately 10pm, the smell of burning skin and electrics was still very evident, however the room was freezing cold. I again attended reception and advised that the air conditioning was not working, the same lady at reception advised that the electric shock would have triggered the safety switch and that she needed to go and turn it back on. Shortly after, the reception staff member knocked on the door of our room to enquire if the heating was working - I cannot believe that the hotel would turn the electricity back on without even checking the area first to ensure that it was safe! During the course of the night, my wife woke many times and took pain killer medication, of which we were fortunate to have in our possession. Needless to say, our special, much anticipated, night away was ruined, I am amazed that reception staff failed to attend our room or offer medical assistance. Rather than having a leisurely afternoon in the Yarra Valley the following day, we instead left the hotel and sort medical treatment immediately after checkout. It's now more than two weeks since our horror visit to this hotel and my wife still describes her injury as "agony". We have told many family & friends about our experience, of which one commented that the burn to my wife's wrist was not a contact burn, but an exit point due of the electrocution - the comment went further, saying that if my wife had have been touching her other arm at the time, she could have been killed because the electric current would not have had an exit point! Despite two emails to the hotel following our horror stay, we are yet to receive a response from the hotel.

Beautiful old hotel and the rooms are done in the same old world decor. We stayed in a Melba Suite and loved it The only negative was that even though it was a ground floor suite with a little verandah and lovely courtyard view, we couldn't open any window (there isn't one) nor the French doors. We like to get fresh air during the night but there are no insect screens and so presumably that's why the doors are locked. Seems a shame that you can't go out on your verandah. Other than that, it was just wonderful.

My third trip to Chateau Yering. As always a pleasure. The staff knew my name, saved my favorite breakfast table. Accommodated a special booking for dinner. And I was happily surprised to find a card in my room with a local treat as this was a visit for special occasion. Their disabled bathrooms are amazing. The rooms have old world charm. A claw foot tub,not found in many places. The autumn trees a sight that must me seen. I have already booked Christmas.

Stayed here for 2 nights. The Chateau has heaps of history and the rooms are huge. Tons of hot water. The meals were excellent and staff were accommodating with meal requests. All staff were eager to assist and are very pleasant. Will come again. Highly recommended.

We had a 2 night stay at Chateau Yering as a catch up for old work colleagues. There were some initial problems ( very poor attitude and communication from one reception staff member who caused issues with our booking and meals ). These were quickly rectified quickly by Vince & his colleagues. He and the dark haired front of house person were excellent . So too were the restaurant and bar staff. However, the place is very very run down . It was very disappointing . The cost per night was $400 (inc breakfast only ). It is more expensive that the 5 star hotels in the city but is no where near the standard. It is the frayed couches, worn out mechanics and dated interiors that results in the place not making the grade any longer and needs a huge revamp . The computers were not working the entire time we were there despite many staff doing their best to repair the system . It meant that staff were diverted from doing their proper roles and the service suffered as a result ( I stress staff were not to blame but were in fact trying their hardest to sort out ongoing problems that were just beyond their control). We ordered the degustation menu with matching wines . As a result of staff being called to do other roles i.e.fix computer system, our wines did not match the course and arrived late , leaving us with cold food while we waited for the wine . Further , the TV in my room did not work properly, I also felt that the breakfast was a disappointment. Usually I would expect a buffet of fruit, cereal , juice, toast and bakery items and then also have a hot selection to order as part of the breakfast ( the cost was listed as $35 pp) . However it was one section of breakfast item and one hot drink according to the menu .That was all. We were offered juice but it was unclear if this would be extra or included . A similar issue happened with the second coffee . There were no newspapers on the first day but some on the weekend day. The food was mostly very good especially from Eleanor's restaurant . A charcuterie board that we ordered was quite lean in the quantity and some of the meats were not very nice ( this was the order that was messed up ) and required additional items to be ordered . In short great staff ( except for the cranky blonde woman on reception ) , nice food that was a bit light on in serving sizes, but terrible surroundings .

The property: beautiful, well maintained, everything works and shines. Spotlessly clean, no matter where you look (common areas, meal spaces, gardens, etc). Strong attention to detail. Excellent breakfast included. Free secure parking. Well located within the Yarra Valley, so you can visit its attractions by short drives. The rooms: quiet, super comfortable, great air-conditioning and lighting, all you can possibly need already provided, so you don't need to ask for that extra pillow, blanket, chair or anything else. Again, spotless. Bathrooms: beautiful, all toiletries and necessities taken care of. Again, cleanliness was impeccable. The staff: professional, very attentive but never intrusive. The whole thing functions as a coordinated, perfectly-oiled machine. Julia at breakfast and Anne at reception excel at delivering exceptional customer service. And the cleaning team that attends to the bedrooms/bathrooms: score 10 out of 10. Disliked · Eleonore's restaurant. Booked 2 months in advance via email, stating allergies/dietary restrictions. Once the meals were served I had to return them, as my requirements were overlooked. Of course they fixed it on the spot but the dishes took a very long time to show up again. The Christmas Eve fixed menu (at $120 per person) was simply awful. First course: a "French onion soup" was in fact two tablespoons of clear broth, a few cold cubes of cheese floating around and a small square of bread in the middle (what was THAT?). Second course: beef (already sliced and therefore cold), a good mushroom sauce and nine chips (exactly like the ones you can get at your local fish & chips shop) but displayed in an artful tower-style. Desert: a chocolate-orange tart with a liquidy filling, didn't taste of orange or chocolate with a tiny side of ice cream and a flower. Very disappointed.

What a shame this beautiful Country House hotel has been so badly neglected, lacking any of the hallmarks of its previous position at the very top of my list of places to visit in the Yarra Valley. It started with the road closure preventing access to the hotel and no one attempted to contact us to let us know. A restaurant we had booked during our visit to the area did though hence we found out there was going to be a problem. When we arrived we were berated by the front desk person for parking at Reception so we could unload our bags which was how we were greeted. At this point I was astonished with the dreadful attitude but I’m afraid it gets worse. We had booked dinner in the restaurant and we’re forced to sit through a 5 course degustation that was some of the worst food I have ever eaten all of which was served cold. At a $150 per head for food only I was astounded at just how bad it was. The second night we were told our only option to eat was to go back to the restaurant for 5 more courses of dreadful cold food so we asked about the room service menu and we literally chastised for suggesting we might want to order in room dining. There was only a bowl of chips and a couple of snacks on that menu so don’t plan to eat other than at the over priced restaurant which ONLY offers a 5 course preset menu which comes out cold. With no access to the towns around it we had no options the second night other than 2 bowls of fries which we were chastised for ordered at 7:30pm because room service is only available until 8pm so they weren’t sure the kitchen could accomodate us. Of course the breakfast must be mentioned although we only had it b the first day as it was so bad we couldn’t face it again but never have I experienced semi raw poached eggs, raw bacon that was stone cold on bread that was soggy from the raw eggs and untoasted with the most disgusting cold mashed mushrooms. Who the hell mashes mushrooms? Not able to eat any of that we were going to opt for pastries but earlier risers had eaten them all and apparently they can’t be restocked for those who arrive an hour after breakfast service begins. The $630 per night Tarif for the room was fine as it was lovely but the veranda and outdoor furniture was so filthy we felt a bit ripped off there too. It’s sad to find a grand old lady reduced to a skeleton of her former glory, needless to say we won’t be back.
