One of the highlights of my trip to KI was returning every evening to Flour Cask Bay Retreat .. the beautiful garden, myriad birds visiting the birdbath, kangaroos and wallabies appearing in the field next to the room amidst the gorgeous sunset. Karon and John run a good self-catering facility, clean and modern, with a well-equipped kitchenette - fridge, microwave,...

Thank you Sheila for your most complementary review. It was a delight to meet you and spend time chatting and showing you about our little piece of the world. The birds still go crazy at the bird bath every afternoon and we hope soon to update our website with some video or maybe live streaming. Yes, you did see a...

Karon and John are wonderful hosts, graciously sharing their small slice of paradise with their guests. They made us feel so very welcome and we had a great time being driven around the property and then across to view the beach. We were lucky enough that on the way back John spotted an Echidna and we were able to watch...

Thank you for your kind words and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have just come in after sitting outside watching the birds going crazy at the birdbaths. After a year and a half here, this never ceases to bring us joy at the end of every day. We hope our little piece of the world met...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at flour cask bay retreat. The room was very comfortable and the location serene. Our hosts were kind enough to drive us around the property to see the abundance of wildlife. Of all our time on kangaroo island, we saw the most wildlife on the property including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and goannas. We found the...

On arrival, we could not have been more impressed, we arrived a little earlier than the advertised check-in time and of course, this was no trouble. John, one of the owners greeted us with what can be only described as the best of hospitality. The room that we had was very clean and comfortable and fitted out with a kitchenette,...

Our well equip, comfortable room was spotless and homely. The heater was very efficient which is important in winter on Kangaroo Island. The bed was comfortable and the linen is new, spotless and of a lovely quality. Fluffy towels too, and in the kitchen everything you need, including a coffee plunger and chocolates as an extra treat. The view from the...

We booked an 8 night stay at the Flour Cask Bay Resort. We are busy people and wanted to "getaway from it all". We found the absolute right place. This was serene at it's best, complete peace and quiet and right in nature's room. Our room was well equipped and we had our own little balcony with a view of...

The new owners (John & Karon) only took over the retreat 6 months ago and are doing everything to make your stay as close to perfect as they can. They offered to take us round the property (200 acres) and go to the northern edge where it is possible to climb down the cliffs to a secluded beach (we didn't...

Kangaroo Island was one of our destinations in our South Australia trip in Dec-15 and we stayed at this place for 3 nights, which has been the highlight of our trip. The room was clean and tidy with everything from cookware to toiletry we needed was there. The land lot is so spacious and close to the wildlife actions. The...

We had booked Flour Cask for two days at the beginning of our KI adventure and I wished we had stayed there for all of it. The original booking was made with the previous owners who did not mention once new owners were taking over and I had already paid in full. This was a bit cheeky but fortunately the...

We stayed here for 6 nights during our trip around Australia in March and found it an amazing place to stay. The room was brilliant, well kept and clean with gorgeous views of their garden and the pastures further on. Every night around dusk there were chances to see kangaroos, joeys and wallabies from the comfort of the room. The...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Flour Cask Bay Retreat, affordable solar eco retreat built 2006. Views, absolute peace and serenity [max 2 couples at any one time], Beach access by road 2kms, complimentary tour of property. Ideally situated as a base from which to explore K.I. Located on 200 acres in total and adjoining approximately 1000 acres of native bushland, 2 kilometres from the south coast of the island, our greatest drawcard is the abundance of kangaroos and wallabies that migrate from the bushland onto the property and can be easily seen in large numbers at dawn and dusk. Echidnas, endangered Rosenberg's goannas, a great variety of birdlife can be encountered on this rural estate. ... more   less
