The resort is situated on a huge sandy beach with ample sun loungers on the beach itself. Away from the beach and within the resort there is a long jetty from where we fed the fish and snorkeled every day. A fairly good choice for breakfast and an omelette station for special requests.
The staff were always smiling and friendly, and a special mention to the Russian receptionist Irena that went out of her way to make us feel welcome. The only negative comment I have was the door of the hillside villa seemed insecure by my standards,it would be very easy to open with just a simple screwdriver. As there was a facility for a padlock on the outside,I bought a padlock and was able to relax when out. There is electronic safe in the room, and the padlock gave me peace of mind.
If they did something about this, the place would be much nicer. If I go there again and they have not done something to solve the problem, I will argue with the Russian smokers. I can speak Russian, so I can argue in Russian.

We stayed in a beach villa which we were very happy with. Comfortable beds, good AC and nice patio outside.
Very nice staff, good breakfast and nice pool bar with Chris as bartender.

Pros-
1. The location is simply amazing - The resort itself sits at the end of a long stretch of beach with calm waters and a beautiful view. There are a lot of people, but it really feels relaxing.
2. Banana Crepes - OK, so this is not exactly part of the hotel, but if you walk down the street out the Chai Chet complex, you will find it. Right next to the mini-market/internet cafe at night you will see a man making crepes that are worth the walk. You can't go wrong with either banana or mango. The price is 30 Baht (about $1).
3. Free use of the kayaks - The kayaks are beat up and parts are missing, but they let you use them for an hour free of charge.
4. Massage - For 250-350 baht, you can get a massage by the sea that is sure to please. Try the aloe massage after being in the sun all day.
5. The pool - Other reviewers are right on the money with the fact that the pool is great. Just a warning that the pool bar is cash only, so plan ahead.
6. The restaurant - The food is pretty good for lunch and dinner, which makes you wonder why the breakfast is so bad. Cost is a little bit more than other spots, but the convenience is great as you sit by the pool.
The Cons-
1. Reservations - We had reserved and paid for a beach front villa a couple of months before the trip, but were told about a month before our arrival that it was not available. They refunded part of our money and booked us in a standard room instead. However, when we arrived, we learned that there was a beach villa available that we could upgrade to for twice what we had originally paid. Not cool.
2. The room - The standard room was a tiny, musty closet that was infested with ants. Daily we fought the battle of the bugs and we made sure that we brought no food into the room. The front office folks did not seem to mind and were surprised that we even brought up our displeasure. We could deal with the bugs, but the smell was pretty bad. Other reviewers here have stayed in the nicest rooms in the hotel and if you are going, please follow their lead and stay in the best rooms - NOT the standard.
3. The room key - How do I say this so that it is believable? We were staying in a decent hotel and our room was kept closed by a padlock. There was no key system, just a gym lock on the door. In all fairness, it did appear to be a nice padlock.
4. Breakfast - A very poor breakfast. There were limited fresh options and you had to ask to have eggs made.
5. The gala dinner - I will make a blanket statement that every guest at the New Year's gala dinner would agree to - DO NOT go to the New Year's gala dinner. Since we were guests at the hotel, the dinner was mandatory and ran us $50 (US Dollars) a person. For our money, we got a buffet dinner and, I am not joking, a bottle of coke for our table to share. No beer, wine, or champagne for a New Year's toast. But wait, it gets better (er, worse). The party started at 6:30 and the entertainment, some cool fire dancers and some disturbing cross-dressers, ended at 10:00. At this point, the owners of the hotel made it clear that the party was over. The owner himself went on stage at 10:30 and sang Karaoke in Thai for two hours. At first, some guests tried to line up and sing, but the staff made it clear that the microphone was for the owner and his family alone. So, and I am not making this up, everyone left. Everyone except about 20 people. Our group stayed just to see what was going to happen. The staff of the hotel then took to the stage and danced while their bewildered guests wandered into other hotel parties. The owner then proceeded to sing right through the 12:00 countdown. At 12:05, his song was over and he motioned for the fireworks to begin. In the end, there was no countdown, just a letdown. The staff continued to party until 2:00, despite guests complaining that they could not sleep with the music cranked up to 11.
All said and done, our group decided that it was a fun experience, despite the comedic incompetence of the staff. So, if you go, take an extra padlock and a sense of humor in your suitcase.
We had a deluxe sea view villa and it was awesome. Large bathroom sunken bath double vanity, great shower. The views of the bay are amazing and you get your own personal terrace.
The breakfast lets the hotel down as the choice is very basic but didn't bother us to much.
The pool is gorgeous plenty of loungers and deck chairs.
The beach is very nice again deck chairs / massage all available.
We didn't eat at this hotel despite breakfast as we liked to go out and about.
Just a few minutes from the local shops and stalls etc.
We paid 3,400 THB for the villa per night you get 10% discount if you stay for more than 2 nights.
Great find, better value that most on the Klong Pram bay.

To get right to the point, the Grand Villas at Chai Chet Resort are just fantastic, and absolutely worth every penny (or satang). So far as I could tell, these are really the only compelling reason to choose Chai Chet over the many other options on offer in Koh Chang, but what a wonderful reason they are! Beautifully designed, spacious & comfortable, generously appointed bathrooms with separate shower and walk-in tub (never used), and best of all, located right at the ocean's edge, with a big outdoor deck area to relax in a lounge chair and listen to the waves, watch the sunrise over the green misty mountains and contemplate a universe of stars. In the midst of the row of Grand Villas, there is a pier jutting 150 metres out into the ocean, and surrounding this pier is a natural aquarium with swirling schools of tropical fish. Parrot fish just swimming around everywhere, for goodness' sake! (I later found out it was a popular past time for some to cast bread crumbs upon the waters, which probably explains the fish!). There is a ladder down into the water at the end of the pier, and you can just lower yourself into the midst of all of these fish for a paradise of near-shore snorkeling. (NB: the water looks crystal clear from above, but is not quite as clear once underwater for some reason, but is still quite OK depending on the current).
Another unique and spectacular feature of this hotel is the rocky peninsula that is part of the grounds, just beyond the Villas. This affords gorgeous seascapes, a great venue for watching the sunset (sunrise in front of the villas, sunset behind), and an interesting place to explore by sea kayak (which are provided FREE for hotel guests to use!). Can also swim out around these rocky outcroppings for interesting snorkeling adventures. Again, this is UNIQUE to this hotel, which essentially contains its own natural park.
Walking in land from the peninsula where the Grand Villas are located, you will come to the central part of the hotel where the breakfast and pool areas are located, along with the front desk. The pool is again wonderfully designed, with cascades and fountains, and an "infinity" view toward the ocean. Really a very lovely tropical pool design, with a swim up pool bar as well.
The main (only) disappointment for us at this hotel was the breakfast. Definitely below average as breakfast buffets go. Very inadequate and lazy fruit selection in a a location full of delicious tropical fruit choices, and a typically overwhelmed egg station surrounded by impatient crowds. Coffee not too good. You will not go hungry, but the breakfast is just not up to par, compared with the other outstanding aspects of this resort. They definitely need to IMPROVE in this regard!
Moving away from the pool/front desk area, you cross a small bridge to where the beach begins, with another cluster of beach bungalows (very basic) and hotel rooms, none of which have anything to compare with the gorgeous Grand Villas. But then the beach goes on and on for 1-2 kilometres and it is a lovely fine sand beach, lined by palm trees and a variety of resorts. Great for walking, swimming, playing around with the kids (if any). Nice places down the beach for coffee and ice cream and lunch.
Aside from the resort and the other beachside venues, you need to walk about 200m inland to reach the main road where a 7-Eleven and various other shops and restaurants can be found.
Back to Chai Chet and in summary, the Grand Villas are among the best value semi-luxury seaside experiences you will find anywhere. Absolutely highest recommendation as a place to relax and luxuriate in gorgeous seaside surroundings, with swarms of friendly tropical fish just offshore, stunning sunrises, and beautiful natural seascapes to be explored. This recommendation is ONLY for the Grand Villas, not other accommodation types at Chai Chet. But for the Grand Villas, I can absolutely guarantee an enjoyable and memorable stay that will bring a smile to your face as remember this unique slice of paradise for many years thereafter.
