We have touristed in Texas for many decades and do not have a 4x4, we drive a full size sedan type car. You would have to really get out in the rural backwoods to have that kind of issue. Corpus Christi is nice, but for sure not my favorite. Galveston is nice, they have recently spent millions adding tourist improvements to the Port/Coast area when they started having cruises depart from Galveston Port to the Caribbean. The strand has lots of tourist shopping and restaurants. Also, Port Aransas is very cutesy and has some small tourist places that are fun-just north of Corpus. Corpus can be a little more run down in places, but there are a few nice restaurants on the water. Anywhere on the coast is going to be more low key "causal" than some of the other areas in or near the big cities. Houston and Austin have some cool stuff to see-maybe on another road trip. Texas has every kind of geography landscape you could possibly want to see (desserts and canyons of North & West; forests, lakes & hills of East; Grasslands and prairie of Central; Hill country of mid-south, and Coast ocean/bay of far south). Of course, you could spend a lifetime seeing it all, Wisconsin is probably the same!
