Landmark Inn tells the story of Alsatian settlement and early commerce in Texas on the banks of the Medina River in the historic Main Street town of Castroville. The site is a unique part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Area. Landmark Inn State Historic Site preserves the industrial, commercial, residential, nonprofit, and municipal history of Castroville, planned in 1844 as an exurb of San Antonio, just one day’s wagon ride west (today just 25 minutes by car). Today the property is under the stewardship of the Texas Historical Commission and operates as both a public historic site and a bed-and-breakfast.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.

Landmark Inn is one of only 38 State Historic Sites in Texas. It is also has rooms for you stay in and experience the history of the Inn and the city of Castroville. The remains of the old mill are interesting, and you can still see the old mill race and the constructed dam to divert water to the mill from the Medina River. Sad to say that the current drought has diminished the water flow so we did not get to see the river overflowing the old dam. The website states an admission charge, but the young man filling in, did not charge us! So we bought extra in the small gift area! SHS's are history that can be seen and experienced; go see them all!

Within walking distance of restaurants, stores, and on the river. A lovely spot with a nice on-site, period authentic, store.
I'd recommend it if you have a chance. Castroville is a quaint little town outside of San Antonio, TX.

I have stayed at the Landmark Inn probably about 6 times over the last 5 years. most recently New Years weekend 2005. It has 10 rooms in three different historical buildings. If you want to see good pictures and descriptions of the rooms go to the web-site of Texas State Parks as this is who owns and runs the property. Price range is $60-$75 for rooms, $95 for the suite. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Rooms are very clean. The double bed rooms are small, rooms that have twin beds are slightly larger and they have a two room suite that has a large bedroom, bathroom and smaller parlor attached to it. This is not one of those fru-fru B&B's. The rooms are "homey", decorated with early 1900's furniture but not cluttered with nick-nacks, ruffles and wall pictures. Some of the rooms have bathrooms others do not but no more than two rooms share a bathroom. Check the web-site for which rooms have bathrooms and bed sizes. None of the rooms have TV or telephones. The beds are very comfortable here too. We always get a good nights sleep in them. If you stay in the main two story building you might want to bring ear-plugs as the bedroom windows are close to Hwy. 90 that runs through town, but there is a great upstairs back porch with rockers that face the back yard to the river. The rooms in the Bath House (7&8) are in the backyard and are quieter but very small with private bathrooms and double beds. The rooms (9&10)in the Vance House near the river are quieter and larger with queen beds but share a large bathroom. The property (5 acres) extends to the Medina River with an old historical mill building in back of the Inn. There is also a small museum off of the lobby front desk area and a small gift shop. Breakfast is served in the dining room of the Vance House building and is continental with fresh Alsatian pastries from the bakery down the street, cereal, fruit, coffee and juice. The dining room - parlor area is very homey feeling, like being in Grandma's old house. There is a bookcase full of interesting TX history books in the parlor. You can walk to churches and restaurants and through the historical district of Castroville from the Landmark Inn. There are also bicycles for guests free of charge to pedal through town. Also you can take Hwy. 90 into San Antonio and be there in about 30 minutes.

I rode my bicycle 40 miles from north central San Antonio to Castroville with a friend. From the moment I arrived I was greeted with a smile by Libby and the rest of the friendly staff. We stayed in the "Castro Suite" which is one of (if not the) largest rooms at the Inn. It was breathtaking. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you - this place is gorgeous. The grounds are wide open and scenic. A short walk down a trail leads you to a picturesque waterfall guarded by a noble bald cypress tree. By the time supper arrived, Libby was ready to provide directions and recommendations. She and her staff were proactive in taking care of our needs. It made us feel very welcome. Our daughter, 3 years old, loved her visit here - plenty of wide open space to run around, a hiking trail and more. We'll be back...SOON!

Great Place! My son was married in May and my husband and I, my relatives from out-of-state and our friends from out-of-town stayed with us at The Landmark Inn. We rented out all the rooms for the weddng weekend and had a wonderful time. We were able to socialize at the complimentary breakfast either in their dining area or on the terrace and at night we sat outside. During the day we enjoyed looking in the shops, had lunch in nearby Bandera --- would recommend it to others. The staff were friendly, eager to please and we also got some interesting history about the Inn and the area. We'll go back!!!

I can't say enough about this place! What a beautiful historic gem! And beautifully restored and kept up! The rooms are furnished with antiques and are meant to look as they would have in the 1800s. Beds are super comfy. Breakfast was continental with foods from local establishments. The staff was incredible and we learned a lot of Texas history from them. They are restoring parts of the property still and we'll be back to check it out!

We LOVED the Landmark Inn in Castroville, Texas. The historic buildings are beautifully restored. We drank wine on the lovely upstairs veranda on a perfect December afternoon, strolled the acreage, and had a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. We rented two rooms upstairs that shared a bath. The innkeeper was knowledgeable and friendly, plus his house was right next door. We had the whole place to ourselves; it was perfect. Breakfast was scrumptious. Anyone wanting a taste of Texas History will love the Landmark Inn.

We stayed here at the end of September and it was so nice. Our guide was David Gravitske and he was very knowledgeable about the local history and a very good steward of the Landmark Inn and its resources.

I booked to stay a night at the Landmark Inn without knowing a great deal about it aside from it being an old coaching inn.
I have to say- it really has been one of the highlights of my trip! The site itself comprises a small variety of buildings including an old mill and a museum offering an insight into the history of the Inn. There's some really interesting information and the staff are very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions. They also do demonstrations as well so on the day I left I think they were doing a talk on pickling!
The B&B has a small selection of rooms in the inn itself and the family's home. They're decorated to different time periods so mine was the 1850's and I think the others go from the late 19th to early 20th century and you do get to choose your room as well! I was in Room 1 which had the most comfiest bed ever and I got a great night's sleep- it was amazing being able to walk out and see the sunset over the old buildings!
I was the only guest so breakfast was included and was served over at the old Magnolia Filling Station where they had a good selection of light breakfast items. I think if there are more guests, they do serve it on site.
Overall- I had an amazing time and would definitely look to go back!

This was a get away anniversary weekend for my husband and me. Because of cutbacks in funding the landmark inn was closed except to those who had already made reservations - so we were the only occupants! The room was simple but perfect for us. The bath was updated very nicely. Breakfast was in an adjoining building and consisted of local kolaches and fruit. This is a state historical landmark and with additional funding could become a definite stopping point for people. It is an example of time in the mid 1800's in Texas. There are educational events for children, at various times during the year; however, adults interested in history would appreciate it. The groundskeeper took care us and knew so much about the history. This was a restful and enjoyable weekend getaway not far from San Antonio.

The Vance Parlor (where we serve breakfast) does not fit 50 people. It seats 16 at the tables, with 4 more seated on couches and chairs for a total of 20.
Our Vance Basement does have a capacity of 49 (we don’t have outward-pushing doors in that space, so that 49 is the fire marshal’s limit).
There are more places to choose from in the Castroville area.
