This was a lovely place to stay over the Cup weekend. Ron and Jan were happy to accommodate a late addition to our group, and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. It was a cold and rainy weekend, but the cottage was heated and very cosy :)
I was very pleased with Ron's and Jan's prompt responses while we were organising the trip, and for their suggestions on what to do in the area. I would recommend Leafield to anyone, really!

Really cute, extremely clean cottage at a good price. The cottage is only a few hundred metres off Melba Highway so you can hear the traffic and trucks. This didn't bother us but if you're looking for somewhere with only the sounds of nature, this is not the place. Good spot in the Yarra Valley close to heaps of wineries.

I gave low marks on service because the female owner was extremely rude to us when we arrived one hour early for check in. She came marching out of a cottage with a blank look on her face, saying "yes? yes? can I help you?" as if she wasn't expecting us. I said "hello, just checking in?" and she snapped that check in wasn't until 2pm and they had been very booked out and were still cleaning. This was fine with us but she was so rude about it, I wanted to tell her to shove it and find somewhere else but they had my credit card number so we had no choice. The male owner is a lot more pleasant, he should deal with the public! Apart from this major initial set back, we had a lovely week and enjoyed our stay in the cottage and it was a good price so nothing else to complain about.

Tried to book, never returned my calls. I left messages on their land-line number as this is the only number you can find online! When I finally spoke to the owner, Jan, I informed her I left messages and she wanted to argue with me that I did not. She seems to think I called her on her mobile when I didn't even know her mobile number! So instead of discussing a date to book me in, the owner much preferred to argue about the 4 times I called but how I didn't leave any messages. Not the fact that she did not return my calls. IF they are having technical issues with their answering machines, and it's being diverted to their mobiles, then that’s on them, and not on the customers! So beware, if you think you are leaving a message, their answering device is not working, or they are not bothering listening to them! My experience talking to Jan was she was dismissive and became very annoyed very quickly. If the owner is like this when you are just trying to make a booking, I would question her reaction whilst staying there! It's too late when you are already there & have fully already paid!! Good Customer Service can make or break your holiday or respite away, so don't bother with this accommodation! For such peaceful looking cottages, the owner Jan is not very peaceful or sweet at all!

A 2 night stay not at all what we expected from the photos on the website. I can see the last review here was 2 years ago however I can honestly say this did not look like the same place from the photos. I gather the photos were taken some years ago when the cottages first opened. It's rundown and in need of some serious TLC.
Firstly the cottage is on Tank water, which is fine, just an FYI, the wire screen door didn't close properly and the lock was broken. The shower was awful, spraying water everywhere.
The oven also didn't work.
The gardens were all overgrown, we couldn't wander around the 'beautiful property' as suggested on the website. And possibly why we didn't realise the property even had a pool?
I must agree with some other travellers about the cottage being close to the road so the noise of traffic killed the tranquillity.
I will however say the bed was very comfy.

Overall I wouldn't give this place more than a 2 star rating and I certainly won't be back nor recommending to anyone.

My husband and I recently spent a weekend at Leafield Cottages and were disappoined. When I booked Leafield it was described to me as a B&B but I was terribly mislead so if you are after a B&B don't go here as their interpretation of a B&B is way off the mark. Let me start at the beginning. After a complete mix up with bookings which I won't go in to we arrived to a very unfriendly welcome. No "hi how are you" or "welcome, let me show you around" it was a woman in a dirty tracksuit acting like I was unexpected and simply telling me where to sign and "oh yeah, I rubbed out your credit card details so better give them to me again." Very professional!! Yes the cottage was nice and the bed was good but if I thought 1 tiny tablet of soap for a couple for 3 days was a surprise let me tell you about breakfast. We were left a whole loaf of bread, 4 croissants and 4 packets of stale cereal. No cooked breakfast or supplies to cook your own but we'll tease you with a cute little egg basket for the eggs we don't supply. Glad I didn't expect a better farewell than my greeting, same dirty tracksuit and looking at me as if I was unexpected again as if she had just got out of bed.

We stayed as part of a honeymoon present, and to be honest we received a very different response than many of the other reviews have suggested. We rang to confirm our booking the day before arriving, to which the owners husband couldn't find our booking as he couldn't find the diary, but assured it woud be ok. He also said that if we couldn't get in before 5pm to ring and let them know. On the day we checked in we did run late and when I called to say that we were running about 20mins late for the 5pm check-in, we received a very abrupt and telling us off response from the lady owner even though the instructions said to call if we were going to be late.
We could not the fault the cleanliness of the Hanaby Cottage, however the front porch light did not work which made it difficult when coming in after the evening meal out. The cottage was well contained and the bed linen was soft and comfy. What I felt was rather strange was that guests were required to empty their own rubbish bins or face a $200 cleaning penalty. Although the bed was comfy to sleep in there was a lot of road noise coming from the Melba Hwy as this property was located very close to the road and truck noises could be heard all night.
The breakfast provided was very poor. The booking website indicated a fresh array of goodies from the Yarra Valley - we had stale crossiants and hot cross buns left in the fridge. We did not get any eggs like one other review suggested. In fact the whole breakfast component was a huge let down, no juice, yoghurt, fruit or decent coffee was provided in this package. This is an area that could be improved upon, to make a more gourmet styled breakfast hamper. Another aspect that could have been improved on was providing guests with a map of the local wineries to visit (in fact the lovely people in the Dixon Creek Cafe/Grill looked after this for us). Im glad we only paid $80 per night on a Groupon Deal, wouldn't want to spent much more for such basic accomodation.

Response from Leafield, Owner at Leafield Cottages
Responded 18 Apr 2014
We thank the guest for taking the time to review their stay at Leafield Cottages. We are sorry that they felt their stay here was not expected. We treat all of our guests with courtesy and respect and do not understand why they felt they were not afforded the same. I remember the phone call the day prior to guests arrival and yes I could not locate the diary. My conversation with the guest was quite jovial so I cannot understand why they would make a point of this. I had been working in the gardens at the time of the call and did not realise that my wife had taken the diary down to see one of our other guests who was enquiring about another booking. I did ask the guest if they had received our email confirmation of their booking to which they responded positively and all was well. I asked the guest an approximate arrival time mentioning that we had to leave the premises at 5 and if necessary would arrange for a key to be left. I was informed that they would arrive between 3 and 4 pm. but it was not until almost 5pm when guest rang to advise that they were running late which was not a problem as long as they could get access to their cottage. As I was standing with my wife at the time of this phone call I can say without doubt that my wife was not rude and was in fact somewhat disturbed by the tone of the caller. The guest was advised where the key to their cottage would be and we left a few lights on for their arrival. I did not notice that the porch light was out at that time and could have rectified this in just a few minutes had the guest advised us of this situation at any time during their 2 day stay As for emptying the rubbish bins our cottages are self contained and we ask our guests to put their rubbish in the bins provided in the car park. Standard practice for all such accommodation. As for the so called threat of facing a $200 cleaning penalty it is a shame that the guest has misinterpreted (deliberately or otherwise) this clause, a copy of which is below, on their registration form. The following is a statement of our Smoking Policy that is on our Guest Registration Form "Guests are most welcome to smoke around the grounds however smoking is strictly prohibited in or around the entrance of our cottages or apartments. We reserve the right to use existing payment facilities provided to charge any guest who chooses to ignore our policy an additional fee of $200.00 if we have to close any of our accommodation to sanitize curtains, upholstery and bedding" We make no apologies for the content of the breakfast we provide which was as advertised on the relevant CUDO promotion - Croissants, bread for toasting, cereal, local jams tea and coffee -and this week we have also been providing hot cross buns. We do not put stale food in our cottages. All of our bakery items are purchased fresh from a local bakery and those products not used by guests are fed to our neighbours or our animals. We thank our friends at the Dixons Creek Café for providing the guests with a map of the local wineries as I did forget to put one in the cottage. This matter, along with the blown light globe on the front porch of the cottage could have been rectified immediately with a simple phone call or visit to our office. As a matter of fact the guest did visit our office on the first morning of their stay and made no mention of either matter. We are open and friendly to our guests and make every endeavour to make their stay at Leafield as pleasant as possible. We firmly believe that if a guest has any issues all they need to do is advise us whilst they are still here so that we have an opportunity the resolve these rather than leave it until after they have left when no one benefits. We recently stayed in one of the smaller cottages and through a mixup thought we had booked for three, but somehow had booked for just two. That was our fault entirely, but the $50 additional fee (paid in cash) was extremely steep given that it seemed to amount to little more than a fine from the owner rather than any obvious additional service.

The small cottage we stayed in was pleasant and clean and warmed up nicely as the evening got colder. The 'motel breakfast' was fine.

We cleaned the place before we left, did the dishes (no brush provided) and wiped down the hob. We put the sofa-bed back together and wiped down the sink and bathroom mirror. We did not make the main bed as this obviously had to be changed anyway. Then we had to return a few minutes after we left as I forgot my scarf, and upon returning the owner (lady) complained that we had left the place in a mess!!

This annoyed me a lot because we most certainly did no such thing. We paid $245 and for that kind of money I do not expect to have to pass a dust inspection! The dishes were drying on the draining board and the bed was not made. For the owner to complain about this was pretty rude in our opinion.

Having stayed at a number of cottages in the Yarra Valley I wouldn't be recommending this place to my friends. It's somewhat over-priced and lacks the trimmings and charm of other cottages that are not very far away.

When we were shown to our studio cottage, the owner left carrying at least a dozen dead flies on her pad and apologised, statng they had placed an insect bomb in the room the previous day. Personally, I would never have stayed if I had been aware of this, as they leave a residue over everything - cutlery, crockery, benchtops, even towels. The first thing we noticed was a list of laminated rules, stating that if there were any breakages, any damage, or loss that money would automatically be taken off the credit card provided. I doubt this would stand up in a court of law. Great welcome!

We stopped counting at 62 dead flies and 3 live, and was horrified when I realised there had been some dead ones in the bed. Not surprisingly, I was unwell overnight. We had trouble lighting the gas stove and when the owner arrived, she informed us the side switches had been broken numerous times?? and not fixed. What? So we had to place our hands into the oven to light, at which time my friend's arm was singed, all the hairs having been burnt off. This apparently, we were informed, had also happened to a previous guest while attempting to light the stove.! We had been left 2 matches for 2 days and then had to wait nearly half an hour for her to bring extras, while she chatted away with other people. We finally got it lit with 2 people working at it on the first night.

The 'welcome list' also stated they had the right to ask anyone to leave at any time, so even though the owners were aware of the problem with the stove, as well as the enormous number of dead flies all over the place, we waited till we were leaving to tell them how disgusted we were by the unhygienic state of the place, and the danger regarding the stove, but they were nowhere in sight . Other minor issues compared to the above were a constantly pixalating tv, and a fire alarm that went off when cooking toast (not burnt).
