We visited the King Valley area when there were no tourists around because of the bush fires in Victoria. We stayed in the Mountain View Motel for 3 nights and our stay was very welcomed by the locals and staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We have stayed there before and will stay again. The food in the hotel was tasty and a good range of drinks were to be had and were sourced locally. Pizinni Wines and King River brewery beers.

Room Tip: WE chose a king room. This was large and very quiet. In fact the whole motel is quiet.

I don't think it is too much to say the front desk person at this country hotel is definitely an experienced maitre de. He is across everything! The attention to detail is great. If I have the right impression he has really breathed some life into this pub. The dining room has been turned from a boring old bare-bricked room into a lamp lit space with curated objet d'art. The food was delicious. I recommend the trout with kipfler potatoes. My companion enjoyed the ragu papardelle. Service is above your standard country pub. Rooms are good value spacious pub rooms, the best thing being the big king bed. I recommend booking all the rooms with friends because they are not very sound proof.

We booked for lunch and did not leave disappointed. The menu is filled with a great range of local produce, and the chef does an excellence job in creating beautiful dishes. Staff were attentive and prompt with service throughout our meal. Drinks were served quickly. The dining room is a beautiful room and the owners have done an excellent job in presenting an elegant yet casual place for a meal.

I was mistakenly under the impression that the rooms here had been renovated. My room was still in the 80’s with poor wooden closets and a shower that filled the bathroom with water everywhere - maybe a shower curtain may be useful - Also the fan could also be repaired to remove some of the moisture.... The bed is not the most comfortable and the doona weighed at ton and almost crushed us! The walls seemed to have fluff on them and needed a wipe. The roof had some rust holes and also needed a repaint. And to top it all off, the room next door had a nice breakfast supplied - I guess we were just unlucky not to receive what the webpage promised. This place needs a serious renovation, or maybe just to revise its rates to reflect the service received.

We ate at the Mountain View hotel twice during our stay in Whitfield. It was the only choice for dinner.

It's a mixed bag.

Some of it is okay, some are not so good and one meal was simply appalling.

The OK bits: the specials of barramundi, the calamari (both mains), the carpaccio of eye fillet (starter) was probably the standout of the two visits. The sweet potato chips and steamed vegetables were acceptable.

The not so good: the porchetta was a miserably thin slice and the ratatouille similarly parsimonious. Why do restaurants serve crackling stripped of the fat? It reduces one of the delights of ordering pork to simply eating crisp cardboard. The appalling: I ordered the Special 700 g rib eye ($65).

There were a couple of problems.

The first was that the meat arrived already sliced up. My mother stopped slicing my food when I was four. I don't know why chefs persist in doing this. Perhaps the waiting staff could ask if I want my food cut up. The answer would have been no.

The problem with doing this is that the steak gets cold very quickly and this is particularly annoying was a big piece of meat like a 700 g steak. It wasn't a problem in this case because the meat was inedible.

The second problem was the chef and I clearly have a fundamental misunderstanding of what medium-rare means. I have attached a photograph of what I was served. I could not eat it. The staff offered to put the already sliced steak under the griller. This would have ruined the food completely, so I declined the offer.

I was left with a small salad and a serving of chips that wasn't much for a $65 dinner.

This restaurant receives some glowing reviews, some from reviewers of considerable experience. They clearly made better menu choices than I did.

The service is excellent. I received some very good advice on beer choices.

This pub is OK. Order the fish special - stay away from the steak.

We stayed here for two nights recently on a trip to the King Valley. The room we stayed in was a little dated however it was large and the king bed comfortable. The bathroom was adequate however the shower does not have a door/screen and so the floor got wet which necessitated us throwing down our towels to mop it up. The window would benefit from better furnishings that provide a bit more privacy. Laura and Duncan, the new managers, are lovely and very helpful. The provision of OJ, cereal and bread and condiments was unexpected however very welcome. A great base to explore the stunning King Valley!

We stayed 2 nights in lovely clean refurbished room with en-suite. Breakfast included - Sourdough bread, yogurt, juice, milk & muesli. Tea & coffee (pod machine).
Dinner in the pub was excellent. Beautiful scotch fillet & homemade sticky date pudding. Mulled cider yum.
Lots to explore nearby.

Our family group had two meals here over the Grand Final weekend. The food was outstanding and as it is owned by Pizzini Winery, the wine list most comprehensive. We also enjoyed the King River Brewery beers that were on tap which are also first class. Then there’s the service which is exemplary. Every staff member was so friendly and accommodating. Given the reduced number due to COVID restrictions the numbers were small but that did not take away from the staffs’ enthusiasm, professionalism and good humour. This hotel could be the benchmark for hospitality. We will be back.

We stopped by for lunch on the way to Mansfield from Myrtleford and we are glad we did. Great beer garden within a bushy outlook with a little creek flowing near by. Service staff were excellent. We took our waiter suggestion of the home made gnocchi with heirloom tomatoes. Fluffy little pillows of yum. It appears to be a 'destination' pub as it soon became very busy in a location that is out of the way. Would definitely return. Certainly worth a visit.
