The rating has nothing to do with the hotel itself, but the expectation that hotel guests must just put up with anything despite the fact that the rooms are expensive.

We booked a $370 double room with views and ensuite. This was their best room. A few days later we were informed that a mistake had been made and that we’d been downgraded to a twin room, we were refunded the difference. The room we got was small, but clean, with the smallest ensuite I’ve ever seen and facing the internal courtyard. There was no hairdryer and none could be located by the staff.

A wedding was on in the courtyard with loud music and revelry reverberating until well into the night. So much for a quiet night in the countryside. Ours was by no means the only room affected as half the rooms face the internal courtyard. So I recommend you check about functions before booking an internal room. Our friends who had an external facing room were far less affected by the wedding.

The hotel itself is in a beautiful location along the Lilydale to Warburton rail trail, which is why we booked it. The rooms are beautifully decorated, clean, the shower is good and the beds comfortable.

In recognition of the inconvenience we faced, Rachael followed up with us and gave us a voucher for another stay, which was very generous.

We were captivated by the splendid view which greeted us when we stepped into our room. We sat gazing for the sun to set. Other positives were the spacious room, comfortable bed and firm pillows as I dislike soft ones.
For the price we paid however, it was disappointing that there was no safe nor fridge in the room especially for a hotel that does not serve breakfast. The inhouse restaurant is nice as we had dinner there twice. There is however a common pantry with a fridge but you have to trod down the corridor which I avoid doing in my PJs.
The other shortcoming is the taps! I do get the mood and style they have achieved but separate hot and cold taps without a mixer is something best left behind in the last century! So unpractical!
We were also slightly put off by the idea of having to lug our luggage out the side exit if checking out before 12noon as the reception is not staffed and front entrance closed till 12 noon. Fortunately, the front door was ajar when we left.
I would rate this hotel a 3, but the view bowled us over so it’s rounded up to 4.

I had dinner here on a Saturday night, lovely hotel, I ordered a Scotch fillet steak, with Potatoes & Jus, not a bean or carrot to complement the meal! At $48 it was up there!!! When it arrived I could not see or taste the jus, I asked staff if I could taste have a small jug he came back said it would cost an extra $20!!! I said no don’t worry ! He then came back and said $5!!! I said no!! Anyway he then came back with a dipping bowl with some in it, said he took it from the kitchen!! How pathetic! The steak was lovely! But I wish they would just add a veggie on the plate like how costly is a bit of broccoli or a few bits of carrot!! I feel it was restaurant price !

A stunning old building in a picturesque town by the Yarra. Our host, Rachael was so very welcoming, accommodating and knowledgeable. Our dinner was delicious- the asparagus is a MUST, big selection of local wines and perfect sitting outside catching the last rays of the day. Suggestions of things to do and see by our host were gratefully accepted.
Our room was delightful. Comfortable beds, beautiful linen and a credit to the owners for staying true to the heritage and era of the building as well as providing luxury.
We loved it so much we are planning on making our stay an annual event. Looking forward to going back next time. Thanks so much.

Second visit - spur of the moment trip to Warburton. Secured a lovely ensuite room, comfy bed, quiet even though the hotel is busy. After a day cycling enjoyed a fab shower and awesome meal (recommend the Tommy Finns hot trout dip). Really friendly and helpful staff. Cycle friendly too. Love the refurbishment of this grand hotel - only sad that its Grand Final weekend and could only get one night - 😢

What a gem of a find. After cycling the Lilydale to Seville rail trail, we were driving back to NSW and decided to stay the night. There were handy, secure bike lockers and garages with charging stations for electric bikes. An easy and secure place to store our bikes for the night. Being a Saturday night it was quite busy and a great atmosphere. There were various areas you could sit from the outdoor beer garden, outdoor deck with firepits, cozy secluded lounges, bar with live music, bar with pool table and a number of dining rooms. We chose a table for 2 in a small quiet area. The food was the best we have eaten in years. The crispy barramundi was remarkable. We learned that over 60% of "barramundi" served in Australian restaurants is in fact imported sea bream farmed in Asia. This is why it is often mushy and tasteless. We were told that the fresh produce used at the hotel was sourced locally and fish and prawns were Australian. What a difference it was! We ended up staying another night and cycling the sequoia redwood aqueduct and the Wharbuton to Seville section of the rail trail. The rail trail runs right past the rear of the property and can be accessed via the beer garden. Highly recommend staying here. It has everything!

This hotel is a gem ! The renovations to this Grand Dame have been clearly carried out with great passion and dedication. Our hotel room was immaculate - from the very comfortable bed and superb linen to the furnishings and mountain views. The staff were all attentive and friendly, and our meals sitting in the sun drenched beer garden were fabulous. Definitely will be returning . Thankyou for a wonderful stay !

Lovely looking place, very friendly staff, nice location and pet friendly, ticks all the boxes except one. The Chicken Parma overpriced at $38 included over cooked chips and a lonely salad of just greens leaves, not a tomato to be seen. Disappointing

Response from Alpine Team, Owner at Alpine Hotel Warburton

Hi Phil, Our parma is mighty special with Italian San Marzano tomatoes, the chefs make the napoli with Midnight ham off the bone . The leaf salad ( mentioned on the menu) is from our local organic farm, this is why the price is $36 (not $38). We have a magnificent heirloom tomato salad from our farm that we support with goats curd that is $14 and worth every penny. The chips should have been perfect and we will take on your feedback :) . We are glad you enjoyed the venue we are all working hard to get all aspects 100%

We said we would be back !!
Perfectly cooked medium rare Porterhouse steak with peppercorn sauce accompanied by ripper chips and salad then a Choc Mint Chop Top to finish was welcomed after a day wandering the area.
Our perfect overnight stay at this beautifully renovated historic hotel that acknowledges much of its history but offers modern amenities.
We stayed in Room 33 with views across to the Yarra taking in the Bridge and the treetops.
Brand new crisp linen, lovely throw rug and cushions, great ensuite with Botanical toiletries provided a haven after a big day.
Warburton is an idyllic country town with wonderful walking tracks, the Redwood Forest and the Yarra River winding its way throughout.
The Alpine Retreat staff were fantastic and 10/10 for their can do approach to making people feel incredibly welcome.

Enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Alpine. The staff were very friendly and attentive. There was ample parking for guests. The meal was tasty, however there was no accommodation for dietary allergies.
It is well situated in Warburton a few minutes away all to the town centre.
The room was nice but the mirror was put in place by a 6ft person as I could only see my nose. There was no blow dryer either. Had to get one from another guest.
All in all was satisfied with the room.
