Bear Gully is the most beautiful place to spend time and unwind. The cottages are very very comfortable, with everything to make a great holiday. We are spending 2 days here, and I’m writing this while looking out over the bay. It’s a bit chilly today but the stove makes the cottage extremely cosy. There are 4 cottages, cleverly positioned so you do not overlook each other and there’s masses of space between each one. Each cottage has beautiful planting surrounding them. One of the best places we have stayed.

Had a gorgeous couple of nights stay here with our 2 adult daughters. Along a dirt road, you enter beautifully maintained gardens with coastal views to the Prom. Cabins are really comfortable with everything you need, 2nd bedroom has huge king sized singles. Go 10 minutes down the road to Walkerville South Beach, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Victoria.

Ok, it’s down a long dirt road and it’s really remote. But these cottages are awesome. Comfortable, well equipped, wifi, private, spacious. Great walk down to the beach, which has rock pools and soft sand. Books, dvds, board games and magazines all provided. But bring everything. It’s a very long way to the shops! Enjoy the front verandah in the morning sun and the terrace in the afternoon. Drive down to Wilson’s Promontory, the beaches are divine.

2 families stayed in the Rookery for 4 nights, $520/night, total charge $2,080.00.
We were hit with an extra $480 charged for 3 kids over 4 nights in addition to the charge of $2,080.00. These children are under 6 years in age, shared the same room with the adults. We consider it “highway robbery” and an utter disgrace that we are expected to pay $640/night for a unit which is unserviced, no heating, no carpet, expired linen, fly infested and spider webs in bedrooms.
If not appropriate that a child (of 4 years) can be charged the same rate as adults, or a group of students etc.
The owner then hit us with a $150 cleaning charge for the BBQ!
The room was well cleaned by my party on check out and left in a more than acceptable condition.
We found thongs and underwear under the beds from previous guests!
The room was invested with both spiders and fly’s. We went out to the closest supermarket and bought the plug in insect repellents.
At a rate of $2,080 (for 4-night) one would expect some form of onus on the establishment to take care of some basic cleaning. Note, there was no daily servicing or cleaning of the unit, which we had to do by ourselves.
Generally the Flies were around the kitchen and bathrooms on the windows at any one time there were at least 20 + flies. This became such a problem, our continual spraying of insecticides was futile, that we went into the local town and purchased electric fly-repellent “plug-in” devices which where maintained during our stay. The spiders were the ‘daddy-long legs” variety and were in webs in the corners of most rooms.
The linen and bedding provided was very ordinary and well past their use by date.
The establishment was overpriced for what it was, equivalent to 3.5 star accommodation, and not a fair representation of the photographs on the website (taken possibly when the establishment was opened). It had no heating to the rooms besides the log fireplace in the lounge. The bathroom was very ordinary and didn’t have a shower screen.
The floor to the unit lounge, dining and kitchen was concrete (no tiles, timber or carpet).
When cleaning up on our final day we found clothing and shoes under the bed, which belonged to a previous guest/s, additional proof to us that the proprietors cleaning regime for the unit was below average to start with.
In conclusion we were very disappointed in the accommodation but more so in the attitude of the operator and the subsequent additional costs that they "sprung" on us.

Response from Jillb224, Owner at Bear Gully Coastal Cottages
Responded 23 Oct 2013
Disappointed that this guest who visited us for the 4 day Easter Break left it until August 31 to post a review for us to respond to. The booking was made online where all our booking terms and conditions are clear as are our rates which are all based upon the number of guests and these have to be accepted before a booking can be processed. After the initial booking was made we were advised on the arrival day that there would be an extra 3 children. We informed the guest that this would be fine, but they would need to pay the extra $40 per head per night as per our booking conditions. The bedroom configuration is clear and concise on our website as is the description of our cottages with photos of the rooms for guests to see before booking, and we are more than happy to discuss any specific requirements guests may have. All our cottages are self-contained and there is no daily servicing, however we are always available for any of our guests to approach us if there are any problems during their stay and we will do everything possible to address any issues. Unless guests come to us, we leave them to their privacy to enjoy their space. At that time of the year the weather was still warm and of course there are flies, however we have fly screens on the windows and sliding doors and unless the doors are kept closed the flies will make the most of the opportunity. We do have automatic non-toxic insect repellents units installed in all the cottages. Our records show that this unit was serviced on 15th February and not due for servicing again until 12th April, well after these guests had departed. We have a wood fire heater in the main living area, which is open plan, and is very effective for the main part of the building. The bedrooms are all carpeted but we do not have heating in the bedrooms. There are two bathrooms one with a shower fully enclosed and the second bathroom deliberately does not have a screen to allow a wheelchair to move freely. The main living and kitchen floor is polished concrete with scatter rugs. We were sorry to hear that shoes and an item of clothing had been overlooked when cleaning. This has been brought to the attention of our cleaners and the issue of the linen has been thoroughly looked into. In the Terms and Conditions accepted by our guests at the time of booking and also signed and accepted at the time of checking in, is a Condition that states “should any cottage require extra cleaning over and above what we deem normal that their credit card will be charged for the extra.”

We recently visited here for a weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun) getaway. The cottage we stayed in was good - 2 bedrooms with a lounge in between - perfect distance from the 2 year old at night. The accommodation was clean and the heating was (very) effective for when it got cool at night. The views from the deck are excellent - looking out over the ocean with the Prom in the distance, and the beach was a short 5 minute stroll through the scrub. The location itself is OK - it's a bit of a drive to Wilsons Prom (about 40 mins) and at least 30 mins to anywhere else if you want supplies. They do say to bring your own supplies - and they mean it! When we arrived there wasn't even any complimentary milk in the fridge which we found disappointing. All-in-all it was a good stay but not perfect.

We based ourselves here for 2 nights so that we could do some hiking around Wilson's Prom. We were 2 couples that stayed in the middle cottage and it was very comfortable. The view out to Wilson's Prom was awesome. The grounds were immaculate and very well looked after. It was a very peaceful and relaxing place. The inside of the cabin was well equipped. Had just about everything in the kitchen except a dishwasher. Had a wood fired heater which was very efficient and the set out was well planned with the kitchen/ bathroom at the back and the dinning room and bedrooms towards the front with a lovely decked area. The front of the dining room and bedrooms were full glass so that we had uninterrupted views of the Prom. When we first arrived the gentleman who looked after the place was quite rude and abrupt . I think there may have been a mess up with the bookings that he thought was unclear (my friend had made the booking) but once it was sorted it was pleasant and very helpful.
There were only 2 downfalls to this place. Firstly there was no Air Conditioning or ceiling fans so in summer the cottage would be very hot , especially in the bedrooms and it is quite pricey.
Apart from those 2 thing it is a very nice place to stay, especially if wanting to do day trips to the Prom.

Have never paid this much to stay in accommodation that doesn't have a dishwasher or dryer and where you are asked to turn off the heating when you go to bed. It didn't have under floor heating or even heated towel racks. If you ignore the price this is a great place to stay with views of the coast. We wanted a cosy retreat and it ticked all the boxes except for having to turn the heater off. The kitchen is functional, the bathroom is basic, the privacy is ok and the changing view is fabulous. I probably wouldn't stay there again (for the price) unless they put in decent climate control.

Looking for a stylish yet homely resort for a getaway from the city, Bear Gully Coastal Cottages is a great choice!

Awesome view of the vast skies and sea right at the door step of your cottage. With only 4 two-bedroom cottages, this is a great place to enjoy the serenity while taking in the wonderful views of the beach.

About 2 hours drive from Melbourne city, pack sufficient groceries for your stay and you can completely escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Love the sea? Just head down to the beach from the walking trail and you'll be there in minutes. Take a 40mins walk and you'll reach the limestone caves and be in awe of what nature has to give.

Nearest town is about 20km away at Fish Creek where you can also check out cool dinning options at the Fish Creek Hotel or a diners called Kook.

Charming and heartwarming, this is the perfect hideout with your loved ones or simply to recharge yourself. Owner, Lee, has a great eye for design so you'll feel totally at ease in the pretty cottages. Classy and comfy, you'll wish your holiday will never end.

Having left a warm and sunny Melbourne we arrived at Bear Gully in rain - lots of it. The welcome we received was superb and we soon settled into our cottage, complete with gas fired heating stove - which we needed. The facilities in the cottages are superb with the option of electric barbecues when the rain cleared. Fortunately it did on day two of our stay to reveal a beautiful coastline, with fantastic views from the bedroom and dining lounge area. Very comfortable for three nights whilst we explored Wilson's Prom. There are some superb walks and lovely beaches. The ideal place to base a tour of Wilson's Prom.
