It is a little old and tired but she is a grand old lady that is clean, comfortable and very conveniently located and a good price for Sorrento.
We didn't have any trouble with noise or loud people. There are shared bathrooms but they are clean and tidy and it's good value.
I have stayed here on more than one occasion and have enjoyed it each time. I would recommend Whitehall Guesthouse.
The rooms are large with casement windows. Some of the windown sills on the exterior are rotted away and flywire screen has little support. There is no airconditioning, just a pedestal fan which has little impact in a room of that size. The room smells stale so the windows need to be opened - unfortunately they don't work properly. The en-suite looked good at first glance. Upon use it fails in a number of ways. The wooden venetian blind is broken, with slats hanging off. The toilet roll holder, towel rail and soap dish are all not fastened to the tiles correctly. The toilet seat is barely hanging on to the bowl. The basin has a curious plug which needs to be lifted up by hand to allow the water to drain and then it comes off in your hand. The drains in this basin smell bad which indicates some problem with the plumbing.
There is no chain on the inside of the door - just a push in button, which is not adequate security as door can be easily opened from the outside.
The breakfast room is a nice area and the continental breakfast compares favourably with the competition. Only problem is that you don't feel like eating because of the smell in the areas you walk through to get to the breakfast room.
The grounds are tidy - a gardener was working - apparently there is money to pay him.
The back of the building - car park area is very shabby. The "guest laundry" is a joke - surely? Remind me which century we are living in please.
I could go on but honestly I don't feel inclined to waste any more effort on this place. If you choose to go there don't blame me I tried to tell you.
Will be taking this issue further and the manager should be fired.
If you want a full nights sleep with nice service, do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else.
The room was dirty - thick layer of dust on crockery, dead insects and cobwebs. The managements response was that the room had been cleaned. There was no apology or enquiry as to what could be done or offer to send someone to deal.
The guesthouse had all the atmosphere of a cafeteria. This place is a total rip off.
The first time I stayed, we chose a guest room with shared bathroom and an open fire in the room (it was on the first floor in the front corner of the building). It was gorgeous and romantic. We had a big day walking around the beaches and loved coming back to the guesthouse to sit in front of the fire with a glass of wine before dinner. There's a full sized pool table and we had a game as well.
The second time I stayed was with my girl friend for a 'girls trip away' and again loved it. The host was very welcoming and we had a lovely afternoon tea in the bar area (with the house cat joining us). We enjoyed a sit in the sun on the grand balcony and walked down to the back beach. Breakfast the next morning (after a big night out) was wonderful with great home made pastries, lots of hot food and fresh fruit. The meals room is gorgeous. Being winter when we were there, it was very cozy with morning sun filtering in adding to the charm.
The most recent stay last May I stayed with my partner for a surprise birthday. Again we were warmly welcomed and shown to our huge guestroom overlooking the grand balcony. The king bed was super comfy and warm. After a day out at Point Nepean park, we enjoyed a gorgeous wine and crackers in the bar before dinner. Again, breakfast was lovely in the wood-floored meals room.
I love Sorrento and visit regularly for a quick get-a-way and will choose Whitehall each time. I have stayed in shared bathroom guest rooms each time and never had to wait for a toilet or shower (though during our girls trip there was no hot water in the morning because we were late getting up - but after 30 mins wait it was available). There are a number of bathrooms throughout the property and no more than a few doors down from any of the guestrooms. Two of the three stays, my room had a hand basin to freshen up which was handy. The rooms are all good size and tastefully decorated.
The property is a stunning 1904 grand guesthouse with magnificent grand balcony and period features. It's right on the Sorrento back beach, and a 5 min stroll to the main Sorrento shops - perfect quiet location.
I'll be staying there again for sure!
The only quip's are that we had to ask staff to come and clean the side table & desk, both had sticky residue before we could settle in. One of staff's members customer service skills was dreadful and she almost sneered when I ask her politely to clean our room tables. The bathroom was a good size, but smelt slightly of sewage.
The other staff were friendly and helpful.
